1. Crash on 22 Freeway Kills Woman & Child in Garden Grove, CA.

Tuesday, January 1 – A 33-year-old woman and 9-year-old girl were killed in a rollover accident on the 22 Freeway, according to CBS Los Angeles. The four-vehicle collision occurred around 12:52 on the westbound side of the road, near Valley View St. NBC Los Angeles reported the 2003 Mazda 3 was struck by an overturned pickup truck, which had been struck by a BMW driven by a 30-year-old man arrested on the scene for suspicion of felony drunk driving and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. On January 4th, it was reported that the Orange County DA declined to file charges against the man suspected of causing the crash.

2. 81-Year-Old Pedestrian Struck & Killed by Vehicle in Stanton, Ca

Tuesday, January 1 – An 81-year-old male was struck and killed by a motor vehicle at the intersection of Magnolia and Cerritos avenues on Tuesday evening, the The Orange County Register reported. Transported to UCI Medical Center, the man was later pronounced dead. The vehicle was driven by Amgad Anwar, 18, who remained at the scene and cooperated with police. No arrests were made and no citations issued; authorities were investigating whether the pedestrian was walking in the crosswalk at the time of the accident.

3. Blood Pressure Medication Recalled by Aurobindo Pharma USA

Wednesday, January 2 – USA Today reported that Aurobindo Pharma USA recalled 80 lots of valsartan, a blood pressure medication that might contain traces of N-nitrosodiethylamine, a potentially cancer-causing substance. The company made the announcement on New Year’s Eve. It suggested patients find an alternative medication from their doctor or pharmacist before stopping the tablets. No adverse effects from the drug have been reported, according to the company.

4. Earthquake Warning App Released for Los Angeles County

Thursday, January 3 – On Thursday, KABC reported ShakeAlertLA, an earthquake warning app, can be downloaded on Apple and Android phones. The app would send a push alert to phones up to 20 seconds before a quake of magnitude 5.0 or higher hits, with a warning message to local residents. It was designed with the help of a Caltech seismologist, who said it’s not intended to predict earthquakes but warn one has started.

5. Motorcycle Crash leaves 2 Dead in Santa Ana, CA

Wednesday, January 2 – Two people were killed in a crash on Wednesday afternoon at about 1:30pm, according to The Orange County Register. A 35-year-old motorcyclist was pronounced dead on the scene. The occupant of a car involved in the crash, a 40-year-old woman, was seriously injured and burned, and later died at a local trauma center. Citizens at the scene assisted the motorcyclist and used hoses to put out a fire. Police were still investigating who was at fault for the crash.

6. Bicyclist Killed After Collision with Car in Santa Margarita, CA

Tuesday, January 1 – Two weeks after being struck by a car while riding his bike, a 25-year-old man died from his injuries, The Orange County Register reported. Chandler Espinoza was hit and transported to a hospital on December 15. He was on his way to work. After the crash, the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

7. Intoxicated Driver Lead Police on A High Speed Pursuit From Los Angeles to San Diego

Tuesday, January 1 – OnScene TV reported a suspected DUI driver was arrested following a police pursuit from Santa Fe Springs in Los Angeles to San Diego. The high-speed pursuit lasted for close to three hours and involved multiple freeways. A flat tire disabled the suspect’s vehicle, ending the pursuit. The suspect was then placed into custody without incident.
