The following is a summary of accidents, deaths, and injuries this past week in the Los Angeles area.

1. 21-Year-Old Woman Arrested in Hit-and-Run That Left College Student Dead in Redondo Beach

Monday, January 28 (KTLA) – On Saturday night, 21-year-old Leila Gonzales of Bell was arrested for allegedly fleeing the scene of a crash involving an Audi SUV, which ran over and killed Angelina Calderon Pinedo, 21. Pinedo was struck and dragged several hundred feet, while crossing the street with her sister near Aviation Boulevard and Grant Avenue. Booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, Gonzalez was being held on $50,000 as police continued the investigation.

2. One Person Killed in Crash near Valley Children’s Hospital

Tuesday, January 29 (ABC 30) – A fatal crash occurred on Avenue 9, west of Children’s Boulevard, in Fresno on Tuesday afternoon. The driver of the car lost control, according to investigators, and died at the scene. A second driver was injured in the accident.

3. Success of Los Angeles Teachers Strike Rocks Charter Schools, and a Rich Supporter

Monday, January 28 (The New York Times) – Protesters converged upon a Los Angeles contemporary art museum to denounce rich privatizers such as Eli Broad, who devised a charter school plan in the city several years ago. The teacher’s strike (set to end upon a 1/22 deal) is considered a setback for the charter school movement. Although not part of negotiations between the school district and union, charter schools have been criticized for drawing money away from traditional public schools.

4. 1 Dies in Oceanside Plane Crash

Tuesday, January 29 (NBC 7 San Diego) – A Piper Cherokee Warrior plane crashed into a hill Monday night in Oceanside, on Canyon Drive near State Route 76. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane went down at 9:00 p.m. a half mile after takeoff from Oceanside Municipal Airport. First responders rescued an unidentified survivor from the wreckage. The pilot was killed.

5. Police Pursuit Ends In Fiery Crash In Hollywood

Monday, January 28 (CBS 2) – Traffic backed up on the 101 Freeway as a car burst into flames following a police pursuit. The driver was able to escape the crash before the fire began. Police officers and firefighters then worked to put the flames out.

6. Bicyclist Killed In Hit and Run Crash in Aliso Viejo

Wednesday, January 30 (Patch.com) – A cyclist in his 50s was struck by a hit and run motorist and killed on Westridge Drive and Woods Canyon Drive in Aliso Viejo. The suspect, 42, was found a mile away, where he was arrested, after witnesses provided police with a description of the vehicle.

7. Storm Brings Heavy Rain, Lightning Strikes, Hail to Southern California

Thursday, January 31 (CBS 2) – On Thursday morning, heavy rain and thunderstorms let officials to close parts of the Pacific Coast Highway due to potential mud flows and rock falls. Zuma Beach in Malibu was shut down just before 9:00 a.m. because of the lightning threat. Closures were reported in Hermosa Beach and Newport Beach as well. There were also hail reports in West Hollywood.

8. Woman Found Dead In Griffith Park; Homicide Investigation Launched

Tuesday, January 29 (CBS 2) – A deceased woman, believed to be 30 to 40 years old, was discovered by park rangers near Red Oak Drive at about 11:00 a.m. According to police, she was wrapped in a blanket or sleeping bag. Investigators at the scene suspected foul play, and a homicide investigation was launched.

9. Westbound 118 Freeway Reopens in Pacoima Following Rollover Crash

Wednesday, January 30 (KTLA 5) – An elderly man and woman were injured when their vehicle overturned on the 118 Freeway at around 6:15 p.m. The westbound lanes through Pacoima were subsequently blocked as traffic was diverted. Both victims were reported to be in fair condition.

10. 2 Dead, 2 Injured in Crash on Highway 70

Wednesday, January 30 (Action News) – The driver and right, front passenger of a Honda Civic were killed when a Chevy Avalanche collided with its passenger side on Highway 70, south of Ramirez Road in Yuba County. Jeanne Kendal, 68, of El Sobrante, was driving the Avalanche and didn’t have time to brake. She was transported to a local emergency room with major injuries.
