This Week In The News (12/22-12/28)

This week featured numerous fire- and traffic-related accidents, injuries, and fatalities in California. Here is a sampling of incidents that occurred on or around Christmas 2018:

1. South Gate Fire Kills Man

Wednesday, December 26 – A man was rescued from a house fire on the 10000 block of San Vincente Avenue and died after suffering cardiac arrest, according to KTLA5. The man was found after firefighters searched the home, who initially responded to a 911 call, at about 2:50 a.m., concerning a natural gas smell in the area. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

2. Pedestrian Killed by Truck in Perris, CA

Tuesday, December 25 – According to OnScene.TV, a truck transporting a gooseneck horse trailer struck a woman on the 23000 block of Post Road, who was pronounced deceased by first responders. The truck was leaving an equestrian event at the time of the crash. The driver remained on the scene.

3. Audi Erupts into Flame at Santa Ana Gas Station

Tuesday, December 25 – While refueling at a World Express Gas Station on North Broadway, an Audi SUV caught fire. The vehicle was destroyed by the blaze, as reported by OnScene.TV. Firefighters extinguished the flame within 20 minutes, after a gas station attendant attempted to put it out with a fire extinguisher. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

4. Motorcyclist Dies After Crash in Hawthorne, CA

Wednesday, December 26 – A motorcyclist was killed after losing control of his vehicle on Prairie Avenue in Hawthorne. The single vehicle crash occurred just before 1:20 a.m., according the police lieutenant on the scene. According to the Daily Breeze, officers believed the motorcyclist struck a curb or tree before crashing.

5. Driver Driving The Wrong Way Kills Teen Near Somis, Ventura County

Sunday, December 23 – Elmer Pinacho, 18, was killed after being stuck by an alleged wrong-way drunken driver, as reported by VC Star. The man was riding as a front passenger in a Honda Accord, which was involved in a head-on collision at 12:18 a.m with a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Police arrested the pickup driver, Ramon Trujillo-Ravelo, 41, who suffered minor injuries. Pinacho, who had been studying to be a barber, is survived by his parents, two younger siblings, and cousins with whom he regularly socialized with.

6. DUI Kills Man in Hemet, CA

The Press-Enterprise reported a traffic crash related fatality on the 60 Freeway in Moreno Valley. A witness reported a Nissan Maxima rolled over and struck a person at 11:15 p.m., identified as Daniel Amaya, 27, of Hemet. The driver, 24-year-old Richard Raymond Sosa, was arrested on the scene and later booked into Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.

7. Tree Falls, Breaks Roof and Lands in Child’s Bedroom in Atherton, CA

Wednesday, December 25 – According to The Mercury News, a pine tree fell on an Atherton home early Christmas morning, penetrating the roof and entering a child’s bedroom. The Menlo Park Fire Protection District reported there were no injuries. A call was received at around 1:47 a.m., according to a local Fire Chief, and a family of three were inside at the time of the incident.

8. Person Trapped After SUV Collides with Big Rig in Long Beach, CA

Wednesday, December 25 – A big rig crashed at around 11:51 p.m., leaving the occupant of an SUV trapped and another injured (OnScene TV). The crash occurred on the northbound Long Beach Boulevard exit from the northbound I-710. After extricating the trapped occupant with the jaws of life, firefighters transported both victims to a local hospital, while the truck driver did not appear to be injured. Police were investigating the cause of the crash.
