Vernon Personal Injury Attorney

Los Angeles County

The Census Bureau estimates that 207 people lived in Vernon in 2025 (Census). Yet OTS tallied 224 crash victims inside Vernon’s limits in 2023, which put this tiny city first in its 32-city group (OTS). Those victims are not, for the most part, residents. They are warehouse and plant employees, truck drivers making pickups, and commuters crossing a city whose motto is “Exclusively Industrial!” If you were hurt while working in, driving through or delivering to Vernon, this guide to its streets explains what is known about each one and what a Vernon personal injury attorney looks for there.

The corridors covered below:

A city of workers, not residents

Vernon’s 5.16 square miles held about 222 residents at the 2020 Census, against roughly 46,000 people on its employers’ payrolls; a 2006 count put daily inbound commuters near 44,000 (Wikipedia). The Office of Traffic Safety estimates that 402,150 vehicle miles are driven on Vernon’s roads each day. Ranked against small towns with similar resident counts, a place with that much freight and shift traffic is bound to rank badly, and in 2023 Vernon ranked worst on every victim category.

Hit-and-run161

Rank 1 is the worst. Vernon also had 117 DUI arrests. On that one line OTS reverses the order, so the 32nd-place finish is a sign of police activity rather than danger.

Bandini Boulevard

On December 27, 2022, at about 3:40 in the afternoon, a chain collision at Bandini Boulevard and Bonnie Beach Place ended with a Ford Mustang wedged beneath a semi-trailer. A 29-year-old man died. An adult and two children were critically hurt, and county firefighters had to extricate one of the children (CBS Los Angeles).

An underride crash like that one raises questions an ordinary two-car collision never does, and the answers sit in company files:

  • Was the trailer’s rear guard in place and sound?
  • How long had the driver been behind the wheel that day?
  • Who loaded and secured the trailer, and where?
  • Does the carrier’s electronic log match the dispatch records?

On Bandini, the trucking company, the trailer’s owner and the business that loaded it can each carry separate insurance. The federal logbook and inspection rules that bind a carrier hauling out of a Vernon food plant’s dock are summarized on our truck accident page.

Vernon Avenue

From Soto Street east to Downey Road, Vernon Avenue was once lined with 27 slaughterhouses and the Los Angeles Union Stock Yards, and the city’s industries today still include food manufacturing, rendering and metalworking. When a cyclist, pedestrian or driver is hurt along this corridor, the case often depends on identifying the truck.

Tip: Photograph the name on the cab, the DOT number on the door and the loading dock the truck had just left or was heading to. A driver may be an employee, a contractor or an owner-operator leased to a carrier, and each arrangement changes whose insurance pays.

Rail spurs and grade crossings

Spur tracks off three major railroads were the reason Vernon’s factories located where they did, and those spurs fed its warehouses and factories (Wikipedia). Responsibility at a spur crossing can rest with the railroad, with the business the spur serves, or with both. Anyone hurt at one should write down:

  • whether a crew member was flagging
  • whether lights or gates were operating
  • whether parked rail cars hid oncoming traffic

Night shifts and vanishing evidence

Nineteen injury crashes between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., thirty involving speed and sixteen in which a driver left: those three 2023 counts matter to anyone working an evening or overnight shift in Vernon. An April 2016 crash shows how fast evidence can vanish. At about 3 a.m., a big-rig driver ran a red light in Vernon, struck a pickup and killed a 28-year-old passenger, then unhitched his trailer and left in the cab (CBS News).

Watch out: Security video from a neighboring plant or warehouse may be the only record of a fleeing driver, and many systems overwrite within days. Report the crash to the Vernon Police Department and send each nearby business a written request to keep its footage. No plate number? Then the UM portion of your own auto policy can take the place of the driver who vanished.

My crash was at night and nobody stopped. What should I do first?

Call Vernon Police from the emergency room if you have to; a same-day report carries weight with the insurer later. Next, have someone walk the block. Every warehouse camera pointed at the street is a potential witness, and each owner should get a written hold request.

A truck from another company hit me while I was on shift. Is my only remedy comp?

Comp is one remedy, not the only one. It pays your doctors and a portion of your paycheck, fault or no fault. When an outside company’s driver caused the crash, a third-party injury claim against that driver and his employer can add what comp never pays, such as pain and suffering. The comp carrier generally seeks reimbursement from that recovery, so the two claims have to be handled together. Our workers’ compensation page has more.

Police report, trauma care and time limits

Ask the Vernon Police Department for the collision report; this city kept its own police force when it handed fire service to the county in 2019. A seriously injured worker may be treated at Los Angeles General Medical Center, which the EMSA roster rates Level I for adults and Level II for children, or at the adult Level II unit of St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood.

Suing the carrier whose rig hit you is subject to the general two-year statute of limitations (CCP §335.1). Once a Vernon city signal or city truck is part of the crash, a written government claim has to reach City Hall inside six months (Government Code §911.2). Los Angeles Superior Court decides venue for these cases by geography under a 2024 general order, so the building is whichever district courthouse covers the Vernon block where you were hurt, which we verify with the court’s locator (LASC order).

Questions about addresses and carriers

I commute in from another city. Can I still make a claim here?

Yes. Your home address does not affect the claim. With about 200 residents and tens of thousands of daily workers, nearly everyone hurt in Vernon lives somewhere else.

What if I never got the truck company’s name?

Even a blurry phone photo of the door lettering helps. Without one, the Vernon Police report, the other driver’s insurance information and nearby video usually identify the carrier.

Representing Vernon’s workforce

Call Jacob represents warehouse and plant workers, truck and delivery drivers, and commuters hurt on Bandini Boulevard, Vernon Avenue and the rest of Vernon’s industrial grid. When we open a Vernon case, our first letters go to the motor carrier and to each business with a camera on the crash scene, and we order the Vernon Police report the same week. We also handle the comp lien on Vernon cases, coordinating the injury claim with any workers’ compensation case so the lien does not consume the recovery.

Given Vernon’s freight traffic, truck and big-rig collisions lead the list of matters The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani takes there, followed by car and auto accidents, motorcycle and bicycle crashes, pedestrians hit near loading docks, injuries from unsafe premises at a business, hit-and-runs and wrongful death claims.
