Commuters crossing the Altamont Pass

Interstate 580 carries Tracy’s Bay Area commuters over the Altamont Pass, and the freight moving between the Central Valley and the coast uses the same lanes. When something goes wrong there, it goes wrong at highway speed.

May 2025: At least six vehicles collided on eastbound I-580 west of Corral Hollow Road. Two people died, and eastbound traffic was diverted onto I-205 (CBS Sacramento).

CBS has also reported a big-rig fire on the westbound side near North Flynn Road (CBS SF). Collisions on these interstates are investigated by the CHP Tracy Area, headquartered on East Pescadero Avenue, whose territory takes in I-205, I-580, I-5 and the unincorporated south county around Mountain House (CHP). In a pileup, that office’s diagram records the order of impacts, and the order of impacts decides which drivers and insurers answer for which injuries.

Chain-reaction crashes on the Altamont produce some of the hardest fault disputes an auto accident attorney in Tracy sees. Every driver in the line has a version, and the insurers for the second, third and fourth vehicles each insist the first collision did the damage. The interstates show the effect. In 2023 a tanker overturned on I-205 near the I-580 split and shut lanes heading into Tracy (KTVU), and CBS reported a motorist killed on I-205 after clipping a big rig and going over a guardrail (CBS Sacramento).

Young cyclists are the one group where Tracy compares poorly with similar cities; it is the city’s worst-ranked OTS category.

Counting riders of every age, bicycle casualties went from 12 to 15 over those two years (OTS 2022). The exception catches families off guard: if a city crosswalk, signal or street defect played a part, the written claim against the city is still due within six months (Gov. Code §911.2). Plenty of local commuters skip the Altamont drive altogether and ride Altamont Corridor Express trains toward San Jose (I-205 overview). The planned Valley Link line would add a Downtown Tracy station tied to Dublin/Pleasanton BART, with a 2028 start targeted but funding still incomplete (City of Dublin). Someone hurt on an ACE platform or by a transit vehicle is usually dealing with a public agency, which shortens the first deadline to six months.

Paramedics take Tracy’s most seriously hurt patients to French Camp, where San Joaquin General operates a Level II trauma center and can move patients onward by helicopter (Wikipedia).
