Imperial, Garfield and Firestone have all seen fatal crashes:

• Imperial Highway and Garfield Avenue, March 2, 2025. A five-vehicle collision in the early hours left one motorist dead, pronounced at 2:38 a.m. (KFI); ABC7 reported that the suspect ran a red light under the influence.
• The same intersection, May 26, 2025. A domestic-violence suspect fleeing police crashed near the corner’s 7-Eleven, killing himself and a driver who had nothing to do with the chase (ABC7).
• Firestone Boulevard, 2021. A street race killed the racer and a bystander motorist (KFI).

South Gate PD made 241 DUI arrests in 2023, more than most departments its size. Even so, alcohol still figured in crashes that killed or hurt 71 people, the city’s 9th-worst ranking. Port trucks on the 710 and the 105

Freeway lanes are not South Gate PD territory. The CHP’s Santa Fe Springs Area, on Orr and Day Road, names the 5, 105, 605, 60 and 91 on its patrol list (CHP), and the city rankings above leave all of those crashes out. They can be deadly: an off-duty South Gate police detective died after his car overturned on the 605 near Firestone Boulevard (CBS LA).

The 710 is the freight artery. A Caltrans and UC Berkeley Connected Corridors evaluation found an unusually high share of trucks on the Atlantic Boulevard on-ramp to the northbound 710, fed by an intermodal rail yard nearby (Connected Corridors). Being hit by a container rig brings in the driver, the motor carrier and often a separate trailer owner, each insured separately. A road or vehicle owned by a public agency changes the deadline. A written claim must reach South Gate City Hall or LA Metro within six months of the injury before either can be sued (§911.2), and Caltrans is covered by the same rule.

Tweedy Boulevard and city streets

The City has rebuilt part of Tweedy Boulevard. Its Tweedy Mile project, from Dearborn Avenue to Dorothy Avenue, added bulb-outs and high-visibility crosswalks at 11 intersections and in-roadway warning lights at four uncontrolled student crossings (City of South Gate). Metro construction
