Shasta Lake Personal Injury Attorney

Shasta County

Shasta Dam Boulevard is the main street of Shasta Lake and also State Route 151, the road that carries visitors from Interstate 5 toward the dam (SafeTREC 2016; city history). Most of what an injured person needs to do in the first three days after a crash here depends on that road, on the Sheriff’s deputies who police the city under contract, and on a hospital in Redding. What follows is a timeline for those first days, written from the perspective of a Shasta Lake personal injury attorney and tied to the offices you will actually deal with.

At the crash scene

The City of Shasta Lake does not have its own police department. It contracts with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, which runs a Shasta Lake Station staffed by a lieutenant, two sergeants and eight deputies (City of Shasta Lake). Deputies from that station respond to crashes on city streets, including Shasta Dam Boulevard, Lake Boulevard and Cascade Boulevard. Out on Interstate 5 the jurisdiction changes, and the Highway Patrol investigates instead of the station on the boulevard. An auto accident attorney in Shasta Lake therefore asks the Sheriff’s station for city-street reports and the Highway Patrol for freeway ones.

Before you leave, if you can:

  • Deputy and incident number
  • Photos of vehicles and lane
  • Is the driver a visitor?
  • Nearby business cameras

The I-5 interchange at Shasta Dam Boulevard is lined with restaurants, gas stations and motels that serve people bound for Shasta Dam and the lake (city history). A motorist who has checked out of an interchange motel by morning is hard to reach again, which makes the curbside exchange of licenses and insurance cards unusually important here.

Why did a Sheriff’s deputy, not a city officer, take my report?

Because the city buys its policing from the county. The eleven officers at the Shasta Lake Station are Sheriff’s employees assigned to the city’s streets under that contract.

The driver was a tourist on the way to Shasta Dam. Can I still recover?

Yes. The visitor’s insurer owes the claim under California law, and a crash on the way to the dam is no different from one on the way to work.

At Mercy in Redding

The emergency department at Mercy Medical Center in Redding is where the most serious Shasta Lake injuries usually end up (Mercy). Tell the emergency staff about every symptom, including headache and neck pain, because the emergency record is the first medical evidence in the claim.

Back at the scene in daylight

The next morning, call the Sheriff’s Shasta Lake Station and ask how and when the report can be obtained. Then return to the scene, or ask someone to, and photograph it in daylight.

What to photograph depends on the road. A 2016 pedestrian and bicycle safety review of the city, prepared with UC Berkeley’s SafeTREC and Cal Walks, described conditions that often matter in an injury claim (SafeTREC 2016):

StreetConditions noted in 2016
Shasta Dam Blvd (SR-151)Road diet with bike lanes; 45 mph at the city ends, 30 mph downtown; speeds appeared higher than desired; crossings challenging
Lake Blvd45–50 mph; a 50 mph section passes a public school with no sidewalks and a faded shoulder bike lane
Cascade BlvdWide, 45–50 mph; a cluster of bicycle collisions
Most neighborhood and arterial streetsSidewalks generally missing outside the downtown core of Shasta Dam Blvd and Front St

These observations are a decade old and some conditions may have changed. Current photographs show what the road looked like on the day you were hurt.

I was hit while walking along a street with no sidewalk. Is that my fault?

Not automatically. The lack of a sidewalk does not excuse a driver from watching for pedestrians, and the 2016 review found sidewalks missing on most streets outside downtown. A Shasta Lake pedestrian accident lawyer will pair that finding with photographs of your route.

When the insurer calls

Somewhere around day two, a claims representative for the other driver usually phones and asks to record your account; nothing obliges you to agree. Refer that request to your lawyer. Report the crash to your own insurer, and check whether your policy includes uninsured motorist and medical payments coverage.

Tip: Pedestrians and cyclists on Lake or Cascade Boulevard are covered by their own auto policy’s uninsured motorist benefits in many cases, even though no car of theirs was involved.

What the older safety data shows

UC Berkeley’s review covered ten years of collisions within the city, 2006 to 2015, and flagged its last two years as provisional (SafeTREC 2016):

TotalFatalSevere
Pedestrians1422
Bicyclists14—1

Pedestrian collisions were concentrated on Shasta Dam Boulevard. Bicycle collisions clustered on Shasta Dam, Lake and Cascade Boulevards and had been trending up since 2011, and those three corridors are where a Shasta Lake bicycle accident lawyer starts asking about lane width and striping. The report also noted that major streets near schools and parks carried 45 to 50 mph limits.

More recent state figures are small. In 2023 OTS counted 9 people killed or injured on city streets, 81st of 103 similar cities, with a composite ranking of 44th; individual categories such as young drinking drivers (1 victim, 12th) and child pedestrians (1 victim, 13th) each rest on a single person (OTS). Rank 1 is the worst.

Are the 2006–2015 numbers still relevant?

They are the most detailed public review of pedestrian and bicycle crashes in the city, but they are old. We use them for background and rely on current evidence from your crash.

Weeks after the crash

Keep each follow-up visit, whether in Redding or closer to home, and file every bill and work-absence note in one folder for the lost wages claim. An adjuster reviewing a Shasta Lake claim will compare the treatment dates against the crash date and treat any long gap as evidence that you recovered.

If the condition of the road may have contributed, such as a missing sidewalk, a faded bike lane or a crossing with no safe gap, decide early who owns it. Shasta Dam Boulevard is a state route, so its design falls to the State; other streets may belong to the City of Shasta Lake or to Shasta County. Whichever public body owns the spot, whether Caltrans for the boulevard or City Hall for a side street, must receive a written claim within six months before it can be sued (Gov. Code §911.2). Passengers injured on a RABA bus face the same six-month rule (RABA).

Two-year limit and the county court

The motorist’s insurer has no deadline pressure of its own, but you do: under CCP §335.1, the courthouse door for a lawsuit against the motorist closes two years after the collision. Someone who crossed the boulevard between marked crossings, where the 2016 review called crossings challenging, keeps a claim even if a jury assigns part of the fault to them (CACI 405). The Shasta County Superior Court has jurisdiction over a lawsuit arising from a crash anywhere in Shasta Lake, Redding or the rest of the county (court site).

Representing Shasta Lake residents and visitors

The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani (Call Jacob) represents residents of Central Valley, Project City, Summit City, Pine Grove and Toyon, the five communities that became Shasta Lake (city history), along with visitors hurt on the way to the dam and anyone in the north county who needs an injury lawyer near Shasta Lake. On a Shasta Lake case we obtain the Sheriff’s Shasta Lake Station or CHP report, collect the Mercy Medical Center records and determine early whether the State, the City or the County must receive a six-month claim. Our work here covers:

Meetings happen where you are, at home in Summit City or Project City or in a room at Mercy, and a Shasta Lake car accident lawyer charges nothing for that first conversation or at all unless we win. Call (888) 952-2952. Typing the details into the case evaluator works too, especially from a hospital bed in Redding.

This timeline is general information assembled from Sheriff, SafeTREC, OTS and state-law sources, and it is not legal advice about your crash or your deadlines.
