Shafter Personal Injury Attorney
Kern County
Six miles of East Lerdo Highway produced more crashes than any other corridor studied in Shafter’s June 2022 Local Road Safety Plan: 69 collisions, 8 of them fatal or severe, between 2015 and 2019 (Shafter LRSP). For a Shafter personal injury attorney, that plan is more useful than any statewide statistic, because the city’s engineers have already named the roads where its 23,871 residents (Census 2025 estimate) are most often hurt. What follows walks through Lerdo, Zerker, Seventh Standard, Central Valley Highway and Santa Fe Way in turn, with the evidence worth securing on each.
At a glance — Shafter
- 965 collisions on city streets and SR-43, 2015–2019, including 10 fatal and 37 severe-injury crashes (LRSP)
- Almost every trip is by car: the plan’s 2019 census table puts solo commuting at 85.1%
- Reports come from Shafter’s own police; trauma patients go about 18 miles to Kern Medical
- Shafter Police Department, Kern COG and the city all took part in the safety plan
Six locations the plan keeps naming
Kern COG, the regional planning agency, posted the plan, which names 11 high-injury corridors and 11 high-injury intersections. These six recur throughout this page.
| Location | What the plan found, 2015–2019 |
|---|---|
| E Lerdo Hwy, Shafter Ave to Zerker Rd | 69 collisions, 8 fatal or severe, 27 hit-object, 8 DUI |
| Zerker Rd, 7th Standard Rd to the T-intersection | 21 collisions, 4 fatal or severe, over 3.3 miles |
| Central Ave at Central Valley Hwy (SR-43) | 27 collisions, 13 of them broadsides |
| Santa Fe Way at Burbank St | 5 collisions, 2 fatal or severe, the top intersection score |
| 7th Standard Rd at Zachary Ave | 9 collisions, 1 fatal or severe |
| Highway 43, Venable Ln to Mayer Ln | Listed high-injury corridor |
East Lerdo Highway
Residents named Lerdo Highway, Shafter Avenue and Central Valley Highway more than any other streets when the city asked for public comment. Five of the 11 ranked intersections are on Lerdo: at Zerker Road, Beech Avenue, Central Valley Highway, Elm Street and Pine Street. Lerdo and Zerker logged 24 collisions over the five years; Lerdo and Central Valley Highway logged 21.
The Lerdo numbers have an unusual shape. Twenty-seven of its 69 collisions were hit-object crashes, where a car left its lane and struck something fixed, and eight involved an impaired driver. When a vehicle runs off a dark stretch east of town, a lawyer asks three things: what the driver was doing, whether another vehicle pushed it off the pavement, and whether the object it struck sat too close to the travel lane.
Tip: Before the tow truck arrives, photograph whatever your car hit on Lerdo, the pavement edge and any tire marks in the dirt shoulder. Those marks wash out or get graded over, and they may be the only physical proof of how the car left the road.
Two rural locations with severe outcomes
Zerker Road north of Seventh Standard
The second-ranked corridor is a 3.3-mile run of Zerker Road with 21 collisions, four of which killed or seriously injured someone. One serious crash in five is a heavy ratio for a lightly traveled farm road, and it means a Zerker collision is more likely than most to involve a hospital stay. Zerker also crosses Lerdo at one of the busiest crash points in the city.
Santa Fe Way at Burbank Street
No intersection in Shafter scored higher, even though only five collisions occurred there from 2015 to 2019. Two of those five were fatal or severe, and each was a broadside caused by a driver who did not yield. Severity, not volume, is what lifted a rural corner on Santa Fe Way above busier junctions in town.
Seventh Standard Road and the logistics park
Zachary Avenue meets Seventh Standard Road at the gate to Paramount Logistics Park, a freight hub with more than 10,000 feet of BNSF-connected track that serves the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports. Its largest tenants arrived in stages (Wikipedia):
| Tenant | Opened |
|---|---|
| Target | 2002 |
| FedEx Ground | 2015 |
| Ross | 2015 |
| Amazon fulfillment center | 2022 |
Nine collisions at that warehouse gate made the city’s high-injury intersection list, and one of them left someone dead or seriously hurt.
When a tractor-trailer swinging out of a Paramount distribution center hits a passenger car, the claim can reach the driver, the motor carrier, a separate trailer owner and whoever loaded the freight. Hours-of-service logs and inspection reports belong in the first preservation letter to the carrier, before routine retention periods run out. Shafter drivers hit by a semi near the Paramount gate can find carrier-liability basics on our truck accident page.
Central Valley Highway through town
Inside city limits, State Route 43 carries the name Central Valley Highway and passes the court’s Shafter branch at number 325. At Central Avenue it saw 27 collisions in the study years, the highest total at any intersection in the plan, and nearly half were broadsides. Lerdo’s crossing of the same highway is also ranked, and so is the Highway 43 segment from Venable Lane to Mayer Lane.
Watch out: SR-43 belongs to the state, so a crash blamed on its signal timing, lane layout or shoulders leads to a claim against the State of California, and that written claim generally must be presented within six months (Government Code §911.2). A crash on a city-owned approach street such as Central Avenue would instead involve the City of Shafter.
Shafter Police, Kern Medical and Truxtun Avenue
Police report. Officers of the Shafter Police Department respond to wrecks on Lerdo, Zerker and the town grid, and the department sat at the table while the 2022 plan was drafted. Ask for the report by number, and ask whether officers pulled camera footage from businesses on Central Valley Highway or at the logistics park.
Hospital records. Ambulances carrying the most seriously injured from Shafter usually head about 18 miles toward Bakersfield, where Kern Medical holds the county’s sole adult Level II trauma designation (EMSA). From Kern Medical, request the trauma bay record, every CT read and the itemized bill, since insurers price a Shafter claim from those pages.
Court. Residents often assume the branch courthouse at 325 Central Valley Highway will hear their case. That branch appears on the court’s list of civil locations, but a claim for serious injuries from a Lerdo wreck usually seeks more than $35,000, and the court sends those claims to Bakersfield’s Metropolitan Justice Building at 1215 Truxtun (Kern Superior Court). A complaint against a negligent Zerker Road or Lerdo Highway motorist generally has to be on file by the second anniversary of the crash (CCP §335.1), and a jury that assigns you part of the blame for an unlit-road collision reduces your award by that percentage instead of barring it (CACI 405).
- Shafter PD’s report number for a Lerdo, Zerker or Santa Fe Way crash
- Pictures of the pole, ditch or trailer your car struck, taken at night if the stretch is unlit
- Door logos or DOT numbers on any almond, pistachio or freight truck
- Security cameras facing Seventh Standard Road or Central Valley Highway
- Every Kern Medical image, chart note and bill
Right-of-way, alcohol and speed
The plan grouped Shafter’s fatal and severe-injury collisions by cause:
- 23% automobile right-of-way violations
- 21% driving under the influence
- 17% unsafe speed
Side-impact crashes at intersections (36%) and cars striking fixed objects (26%) were the two collision types engineers saw most in Shafter’s worst outcomes. Just under a quarter (23%) happened after dark on unlit streets. The count of serious crashes reached 14 in 2019, the final study year.
| Shafter, 2023 | Victims | Place among 103 |

| Victims, all alcohol-involved crashes | 14 | 23 |
| All victims killed or injured | 55 | 67 |
| Composite ranking | — | 56 |

Young adult drinking drivers are where Shafter stands out in the state’s population group, more than in total injuries. The same OTS table shows 51 DUI arrests in Shafter, ranked 55th; because that column runs in reverse, with 1st going to the city with the fewest arrests, it measures how actively officers stopped impaired drivers, not how dangerous the roads were.
Proof that the other motorist was impaired usually settles liability and can support a punitive damages request against that motorist personally. Impairment does nothing to raise that driver’s insurance limits, however, so on any Lerdo or Central Valley Highway case involving alcohol we review your own uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage in the first week.
Warehouse, farm and commuter clients in Shafter
We represent Shafter residents, farmworkers and warehouse staff injured on Lerdo Highway, Zerker Road, Seventh Standard Road and Central Valley Highway. On a new Shafter case we order the police report, check the crash site against the city’s ranked corridors, and put any carrier operating from Paramount Logistics Park on notice to keep its driver and vehicle records.
Broadsides and run-off-road wrecks lead the city’s data, and beyond those car crashes we take on:
- Big-rig crashes tied to the Amazon, FedEx Ground, Ross and Target warehouses
- Motorcycle cases (six riders were hurt or killed in Shafter in OTS’s 2023 count)
- Pedestrians and bicyclists struck in town or out toward Smith Corner and Thomas Lane
- Falls and equipment injuries on farm or warehouse premises
- Wrongful death claims for families, in a city that recorded 10 fatal collisions in five years
A rider broadsided by a left-turning pickup at Central and SR-43 will hear the insurer say he was hard to see; our motorcycle accident page explains that defense. The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani will send someone to a kitchen table near Thomas Lane or a hospital room in Bakersfield, without charge, for anyone looking for an auto accident attorney in Shafter; if there is no recovery, there is no fee. Questions about Lerdo, Zerker and SR-43 crashes
A driver crowded me off Lerdo Highway and I hit a pole. Is that driver responsible?
Possibly, even without contact between the cars. A driver who forces you onto the shoulder can be at fault, and witnesses, dashcam video and the tire marks at the scene are how that is shown.
A truck leaving the Paramount park hit me near Zachary Avenue. Whose insurance pays?
Normally the motor carrier’s policy responds first. Distribution tenants at the park, trailer leasing firms and freight brokers can each be in the picture, and each may carry its own policy.
Santa Fe Way at Burbank is on the city’s list. Is the city at fault?
Not by itself; who caused the crash still depends on the drivers’ conduct on Santa Fe Way or Lerdo that day. A ranking becomes useful when the road itself contributed, for example where the 2022 plan flagged unlit Shafter streets and your crash happened in the dark; a claim against the City of Shafter must be presented within six months.
The driver was booked for DUI after our Lerdo crash. What does that change?
The arrest helps establish fault, but the insurer will still dispute your injuries and what the claim is worth, and the criminal case will not cover your Kern Medical bills.
Can my case be heard at the courthouse on Central Valley Highway?
Smaller claims may stay at a regional branch. The court routes cases seeking more than $35,000 to the Metropolitan Justice Building in Bakersfield.
