Santa Fe Springs Personal Injury Attorney
Los Angeles County
Santa Fe Springs has fewer than 19,000 residents and one of the worst street-crash records of any city its size in California. The state’s 2023 comparison put it 2nd overall among 103 similar cities. That figure of 420 covers city streets alone and leaves out every freeway case the CHP handled (OTS). Injured people here often arrive at a Santa Fe Springs personal injury attorney’s office carrying assumptions that those numbers contradict. Below are the ones we hear most, set against the local record.
Santa Fe Springs in four figures
- 18,793 people (Census V2025)
- 420 street-crash victims
- 22 hit-and-run injury crashes
- 8 underage-DUI victims
A small population does not mean few crashes
Most of the city’s land is given over to large plants and warehouses for aerospace, defense, food and other manufacturers (Wikipedia). Those sites pull in employees, deliveries and freight from across the region, and Caltrans puts the result at 668,920 miles driven on Santa Fe Springs streets every day, about 36 for each person who actually lives here. Crash exposure tracks that traffic, not the census.
| 2023 | Count | Place |
|---|---|---|
| People killed or injured | 420 | 3rd |
| Speed-related crashes | 51 | 3rd |
| Crashes from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. | 43 | 2nd |
| Alcohol-involved victims | 39 | 2nd |
| Hit-and-run injury crashes | 22 | 2nd |
| Motorcyclists killed or injured | 22 | 25th |
| Pedestrians killed or injured | 20 | 4th |
| Bicyclists killed or injured | 14 | 12th |
First place in each row would be the worst. Santa Fe Springs is near the top of almost every one.
Drunk drivers are not only a nightlife problem
Underage drinking drivers
Santa Fe Springs is known for industry rather than nightlife, yet the 2023 data list 39 victims of alcohol-involved crashes on its streets, second only to one other city in the group. One line is worse still. Eight victims trace back to underage drinking drivers, the youngest group the state tracks. No city in the 103-city group had a worse under-21 figure; Santa Fe Springs was 1st.
Arrests and punitive damages
Officers working the city arrested 82 drivers for DUI that year, and because the arrest list runs from the fewest arrests at 1 to the most at 103, the city’s 83rd place reflects heavy enforcement rather than a safe result.
If the driver who hurt you was arrested for DUI on Telegraph or Florence, that arrest is evidence of fault in your civil case, which moves forward without waiting for the criminal court, and California allows punitive damages against someone who decided to drive drunk.
Questions from Santa Fe Springs
A teenager who had been drinking hit me. Who pays?
The young driver’s liability coverage, which often sits on a parent’s auto policy, is the first place to look. That pattern is well documented here: the city’s 2023 underage-drinking-driver figure was the worst of its 103-city group.
My crash was on Telegraph Road. Which agency wrote the report?
Whittier police. Under the city’s contract, Whittier officers patrol Telegraph Road, and their report is the one to request.
What if I was hurt on the 605 just outside town?
A CHP officer from Area 550 writes that one; Whittier police do not cover the freeway.
Is the Painter Avenue courthouse where my lawsuit goes?
Possibly. Santa Fe Springs cases are generally filed in the Southeast District, and the county ties the city to the Whittier Courthouse, but the specific building is confirmed when the complaint is filed.
The CHP office in town does not handle city streets
The freeways
People sometimes assume that because the CHP’s Santa Fe Springs Area headquarters sits on Orr and Day Road, the Highway Patrol investigates every crash in the city. From that building the Highway Patrol covers the I-5, I-105, I-605, SR-60 and SR-91, the freeway ring around the city’s industrial core (CHP Area 550).
City streets
Surface streets belong to a different agency. Santa Fe Springs buys its police services from the City of Whittier, whose officers work out of a Police Services Center on Telegraph Road (Wikipedia), and Whittier PD’s Traffic Bureau handles collision investigations for the city (Whittier PD). A wreck at a Norwalk Boulevard or Florence Avenue intersection produces a Whittier report. A wreck on the 5 or the 605 produces a CHP report.
Walking to work on Telegraph Road
Few people stroll here for pleasure, but plenty walk out of necessity: from a bus stop to a shift, or from the Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs Metrolink station. The state counted 20 pedestrian victims in the city in 2023, 4th highest among its peers, and 2 of them were children younger than 15.
Telegraph Road has a history of these deaths. A Long Beach man was struck and killed in the 11700 block around 1 a.m. in September 2019, and a woman walking on Telegraph was killed by a driver who fled in September 2015 (Long Beach Post, 2019). More recently, in January 2024, the CHP reported that a pedestrian was killed on the southbound Santa Ana Freeway at the Florence Avenue on-ramp, near the city line (KFI, 2024). Our pedestrian accident page explains how lighting and sight distance are proved when a driver insists the person on foot could not be seen.
A hit-and-run does not end the claim
On a Santa Fe Springs street in 2023, a driver hurt someone and fled on 22 separate occasions; only one city in the group had more. If police never locate the driver, the uninsured motorist section of your own policy, or of a household member’s policy, becomes the source of compensation. The Insurance Code ties that hit-and-run benefit to a police report made within 24 hours (Ins. Code §11580.2), so a crash on Telegraph should be reported to Whittier PD that same day.
Watch out: 43 injury crashes in 2023 came after dark, between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. Loading-dock and warehouse cameras along Telegraph and Norwalk Boulevard are often set to overwrite, so we send preservation letters to those businesses early.
Truck crashes often involve more than one defendant
Freight moving between the industrial parks and the five freeways means that a truck accident here seldom stops at the person behind the wheel. A motor carrier answers for its employee’s driving, and a shipper that overloaded a trailer or a shop that skipped a brake repair can carry part of the fault, each with a separate insurer and a separate set of records. When a chain-reaction crash on the southbound 605 near Telegraph Road killed one person and injured seven in October 2016 (CBS Los Angeles, 2016), every vehicle’s data and every driver’s logs became potential evidence.
Deadlines are shorter than people think
| Who is responsible | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Public agency | 6 months |
| Private party | 2 years |
| Car damage only | 3 years |
The six-month and two-year limits are statutory: Gov. Code §911.2 for public agencies, CCP §335.1 for everyone else. A public agency here includes the city itself, Los Angeles County, Metro and Norwalk Transit.
Comparative fault matters for pedestrians here too. A worker who crossed Telegraph between signals and is found 30% responsible keeps 70% of the provable losses (CACI 405).
Unsettled cases from the city go to the Superior Court’s Southeast District as a rule. Whittier Courthouse (7339 South Painter Avenue) is the one named for Santa Fe Springs in the county’s locator (LA County locator). General Order 2024-GEN-003-00 is what ties the district to the place of the crash (LASC). Which Southeast District building receives an unlimited civil case is something we verify at filing.
Our role in Santa Fe Springs injury cases
Call Jacob handles injury cases for warehouse and plant workers, Metrolink commuters and Santa Fe Springs residents. For a crash on Telegraph Road or Norwalk Boulevard, we file the first records request with the Whittier PD Traffic Bureau; for the 5 or the 605, with CHP Area 550 on Orr and Day Road. The data above shapes the work: drunk and speeding drivers in car accident claims, big-rig and motorcycle collisions, pedestrians and cyclists struck at night, hit-and-run claims against uninsured motorist coverage, bus and Metrolink injuries, slip-and-fall injuries at the swap meet or other businesses, and wrongful death claims for families.
Trauma care for the area comes from these two hospitals (EMSA):
| Trauma center | Level |
|---|---|
| St. Francis, Lynwood | II |
| MemorialCare Long Beach | II |
Paramedics pick between them by injury and bed availability. If you are admitted to either, a Santa Fe Springs car accident lawyer from The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani can see you at the bedside. Consultations cost nothing; fees are contingent on winning. (888) 952-2952 reaches our office directly, and the case evaluator works from a phone or laptop at any hour.
