Sanger Personal Injury Attorney
Fresno County
Most of the fatal crashes reported around Sanger in recent years happened on the long roads that carry traffic in and out of town: Academy Avenue, Jensen Avenue and Highway 180. If you are looking for a Sanger personal injury attorney, the road where you were hurt is the right place to start, because it decides which agency wrote the report, what evidence is likely to exist and which deadlines apply. The sections below follow Academy, Jensen and Highway 180 in turn, then turn to the people most often hurt inside the city.
The Census Bureau’s July 2025 estimate puts Sanger at 27,228 residents (Census), large enough to keep its own police force, which answers crashes on city streets. A collision on Highway 180, or on Academy Avenue once it leaves town, is a CHP Fresno Area case; the Fortune Avenue office counts Sanger among the places in its 4,045-plus miles of patrol (CHP).

Academy Avenue at Fifth Street
At about 5:30 a.m. on July 23, 2026, a 71-year-old Sanger man was struck and killed at Academy Avenue and Fifth Street by a driver who did not stop. Sanger police identified the truck through the city’s surveillance cameras and a newly installed Flock license-plate camera system, and they arrested a 57-year-old Sanger man about 12 hours later on a charge of felony hit-and-run causing death (ABC30).
For anyone hurt in town by a driver who fled, that arrest matters: Sanger has a working camera network, and its police department used it to find a suspect within a day. When Flock or a storefront camera does produce a plate, the claim goes to that motorist’s liability carrier. If the Academy Avenue cameras and the plate readers turn up nothing, the injured person’s own uninsured motorist coverage generally pays, provided the crash was reported to police promptly.
Tip: Tell the Sanger officer where you think cameras were pointed, including storefronts, porches and city poles near the intersection. Doorbell and storefront systems record over themselves, so we write to owners about saving Academy Avenue footage within days of being hired.
A short evidence list for Sanger roads
- Which agency came: a Sanger officer, or CHP from the Fortune Avenue office
- A phone photo of the signal head or stop sign facing your direction on Academy, Jensen or Newmark
- Names of anyone who pulled over, from farm crews to delivery drivers
- Any doorbell, gas-station or shop lens aimed at the intersection
- Paperwork from Community Regional’s trauma unit or whichever emergency room you used
- Your insurer’s name and policy number, plus whether you bought UM and UIM coverage
Academy Avenue near Shields Avenue
The 2017 crash
On July 9, 2017, a driver on the wrong side of Academy Avenue south of Shields Avenue caused a head-on collision that killed four people, two adults and two children riding in a Ford. Both adults in that car were unbelted. Two injured people were taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, and the CHP investigated (KMPH).
Community Regional is where the two injured were taken, and the state’s August 2025 trauma list shows no other Level I center anywhere in Fresno County (EMSA).
For your claim
When one wrong-way driver hurts or kills several people at once, as on Academy that night, every survivor and every estate is claiming against the same liability policy, and a single limit is rarely enough for all of them. The family’s own underinsured motorist coverage then becomes part of the recovery. The insurer will also raise seat-belt use and argue that it reduced what is owed. Relatives who lost someone in a head-on of that kind bring a wrongful death claim, which is separate from the injury claims of those who survived.
Highway 180 at Academy Avenue
The 2020 signal crash
Highway 180, called Kings Canyon Road locally, meets Academy Avenue at a signal outside Sanger, and that intersection has been the scene of at least one fatal collision. Around 10 p.m. on July 15, 2020, a northbound Honda Civic on Academy and a Nissan pickup on Highway 180 collided in the intersection, and the Civic’s driver died. The CHP’s investigation centered on which driver had run the signal (ABC30).
For your claim
A red-light dispute at Academy and Highway 180 turns on what can be gathered early:
- an independent witness who saw the light
- camera footage from any business with a view of the signal
- the crush pattern on both vehicles
- each driver’s account as recorded in the CHP report
A jury that finds the Civic driver and the pickup driver each partly responsible divides the loss between them by percentage (CACI 405).
Watch out: Sanger’s city crash figures will not include a collision at this signal. The Office of Traffic Safety builds its city rankings from collisions reported by city police and leaves out state-highway crashes handled by the CHP (OTS).
Jensen Avenue
The 2026 rollover
On the morning of August 5, 2026, a westbound car on Jensen Avenue near McCall Avenue crossed the center divide, flipped and came to rest on the shoulder. The 34-year-old Fresno driver died at the scene, and the CHP opened an investigation (KMPH).
For your claim
Passengers hurt when a car leaves Jensen Avenue and rolls claim against the driver’s bodily injury liability coverage, and riding with a relative does not bar that claim. If a missing guardrail or a crumbling shoulder on Jensen contributed, the case also turns on which public agency maintains that stretch, and a written claim must reach that agency within six months (Government Code §911.2).
Regional plan proposals
Sanger has no road safety plan of its own, but the Fresno Council of Governments’ 2021 Regional Safety Plan, built on crash-severity scores from 2015 to 2019, picked several Sanger-area spots for concept designs (Fresno COG):
| Sanger-area location | Proposed treatment |
|---|---|
| Jensen Avenue, Bethel Avenue to Greenwood Avenue | Road diet to three lanes, buffered bike lanes, midblock crossings with flashing beacons and refuge islands |
| Jensen Avenue at the Fowler Switch Canal | Upgraded guardrail and object markers |
| Newmark Avenue and Annadale Avenue, no signal | Picked as one of 20 example locations countywide for unsignalized-intersection treatments |
Those proposals do not prove that Jensen or Newmark was dangerous on the day of your crash, and they say nothing about who was at fault. They do show that engineers had studied the location, which is useful evidence in a claim against a public agency. Riders hurt on Jensen or other rural arterials can read how those claims proceed on our bicycle accident page.
Answers about Academy, Jensen and Kings Canyon
Why isn’t my Kings Canyon Road crash in the city’s OTS ranking?
Because the Highway Patrol, not Sanger police, investigates crashes on Kings Canyon Road outside the city limits, and OTS ranks only city-reported collisions. Your report sits with the Fortune Avenue office instead.
A pickup hit my father at Academy and Fifth and kept going. Is there coverage?
Usually, yes. Call Sanger police the same day, and give the officer the address of every shop or house near the corner that might have caught the truck or car on video. If the driver is identified, the claim goes to that driver’s insurer; if not, your father’s own uninsured motorist coverage usually applies.
My daughter was a passenger in a rollover on Jensen Avenue. Does she have a claim?
In most cases, yes. She claims against the driver’s liability coverage even when the driver is family, and her household’s own policy adds coverage if the driver’s limits run out.
Will I have to go to the courthouse in Fresno?
The courthouse is the B.F. Sisk Courthouse at 1130 O Street (Fresno Superior Court), about 13 miles west-northwest of Sanger (Wikipedia), and an Academy or Jensen case that reaches the filing stage is heard there. Most of the work on a claim happens without you in a courtroom, and we tell you well ahead of any date you must attend.
Can a Sanger car accident lawyer help with a crash on a county road outside town?
Yes. Two things change once a crash is outside town, and two stay the same:
- The report is a CHP document, ordered from the Fortune Avenue office.
- Responsibility for the pavement, signs and guardrails shifts to Fresno County or the State.
- The other driver’s insurer treats the claim the same way it would for a crash on Seventh Street.
- Six months remains the window for a written claim to the County or State.
Seniors and children struck on foot
Measured against 92 other Group D cities, the 50 people killed or injured on Sanger’s own streets in 2023 placed it 62nd, below the midpoint. Its pedestrian figures tell a different story, particularly for the oldest and youngest people on foot (OTS):
| Category | Count | Place |
|---|---|---|
| All people killed or injured | 50 | 62 |
| Pedestrians age 65 and older | 3 | 14 |
| Pedestrians under 15 | 2 | 11 |
| Motorcyclists | 4 | 24 |
| Alcohol-involved victims | 8 | 48 |
| Hit-and-run injury crashes | 2 | 72 |
Of the five people struck on foot in Sanger that year, three were 65 or older, and the July 2026 death at Academy and Fifth fits that pattern. When a child or an older adult is struck, the insurer’s usual position is that the pedestrian stepped out without warning, so witness accounts and camera footage carry more weight than usual. Right-of-way rules for grandparents and schoolchildren crossing Seventh Street or Academy are set out on our pedestrian accident page.
On the separate DUI line, 124 arrests put Sanger police 86th. Read that ranking in reverse from the crash rows: for arrests the state puts the city with the fewest at number 1, so 86th says Sanger police were active in stopping impaired drivers, not that more crashes happened.
Bringing an Academy or Jensen claim
Call Jacob represents people hurt on Academy Avenue, Jensen Avenue, Highway 180 and the streets around downtown’s Seventh Street. The first question we answer on any Sanger claim is who came to the scene, Sanger officers or Highway Patrol from the Fortune Avenue office, since the answer tells us where to order the report and which cameras to look for.
The cases we see from this area follow its roads:
- Car and pickup collisions at signals and stop signs
- Head-on and rollover crashes on the rural arterials
- Riders on motorcycles and bicycles struck on Jensen and Academy
- Pedestrians struck in town, especially older residents
- Claims by spouses, children and parents who lost someone on these roads
- Dog bites, and slip-and-fall injuries in Sanger shops and markets
Two years from the crash is the general limit for filing suit against a negligent driver (CCP §335.1). A claim involving a City of Sanger street, a county road or Highway 180 runs on a six-month clock instead, and we prepare and file it while you heal at Community Regional or at home.
No fee is charged for sitting down with us about the Academy or Jensen crash, and none is owed later unless we win your case. Reach us at (888) 952-2952 or through the online case evaluator, and someone from our office will meet you at your Sanger kitchen table or a hospital bedside in Fresno. Spanish-speaking relatives of someone hurt near downtown’s Seventh Street can start at calljacob.com/es.
General information only, not legal advice; how an Academy, Jensen or Highway 180 claim unfolds depends on facts we would review with you.
