2. When the crash involved a school bus, a city truck or a broken sidewalk, the six-month government claim period applies to the child’s case as well. A child may apply to file a late claim, but that application must still be made within one year of the injury (Gov. Code §911.2; Gov. Code §911.4).
3. Evidence does not wait. The bicycle gets repaired, and the neighbor who saw the crash moves away.

Watch out: A settlement for anyone under 18 requires a judge’s approval before the money is released. A check from an adjuster made out to a parent, without that court order, does not properly resolve the child’s claim.

Why Alhambra is not the answer

The courthouse question also confuses people. The Alhambra Courthouse at 150 W. Commonwealth Avenue is the closest, but Local Rule 2.3 does not permit unlimited civil cases to be filed there.
