San Fernando Personal Injury Attorney
Los Angeles County
Motorcycle riders are hurt in San Fernando at a rate few comparable cities match. Eight motorcyclists went down on San Fernando streets in 2023, a tally exceeded by just eight of the 103 similar-sized cities the state measures against it, and three seniors struck on foot left the city 7th-worst in that category too (OTS 2023). Anyone talking to a San Fernando personal injury attorney should start by asking which of the groups below they fall into, because a rider, an older walker, someone hurt at a rail crossing and a freeway commuter each need a different kind of claim.
San Fernando covers 2.4 square miles, holds an estimated 23,449 residents (Census Bureau) and is completely enclosed by the City of Los Angeles, with the 5, 210, 118 and 405 freeways around it (San Fernando overview). It has governed itself since 1911, when incorporation passed by eight votes, largely so the town could keep its own groundwater, and it still runs its own police department and water system.
| Group | Number | Place |
|---|---|---|
| Motorcyclists | 8 | 9th |
| Seniors on foot | 3 | 7th |
| Hit-and-run crashes | 9 | 13th |
| Pedestrians | 8 | 25th |
| All victims | 101 | 24th |
| Cyclists | 4 | 47th |
| Speeding crashes | 4 | 79th |
On the blended composite, San Fernando landed at 67th, comfortably mid-pack. That average conceals how lopsided the risk is: riders, seniors on foot and victims of fleeing drivers do much worse here than the overall number suggests.

Motorcyclists on Truman and Maclay
Eight injured riders inside 2.4 square miles is a concentrated toll. Riders coming off the freeways mix with local traffic on streets like Truman and Maclay, and a driver turning left across a rider’s path is a common pattern in motorcycle claims.
What the defense will argue
Expect the defense to say the rider was hard to see or sitting in the wrong part of the lane. The answer comes from the scene itself: the final resting spot of the bike, the crush angle on the car’s fender, scuffing on the helmet, and video from shops along Truman or Maclay. Riders can find more on lane-splitting disputes in our motorcycle accident guide.
Tip: Store the cracked helmet and torn riding jacket untouched in a closet or garage. An engineer can read impact direction and force from them, but only if nobody has cleaned or replaced them.
Walkers over 65
Of the eight people struck on foot in 2023, three were at least 65, enough to rank San Fernando seventh-worst for older pedestrians. No walkers or bike riders under 15 appeared in the count at all.
A bumper at 20 miles an hour can leave a 72-year-old with a shattered pelvis and a long recovery. The claim should account for each stage of it:
| Stage of recovery | What belongs in the claim |
|---|---|
| Hospital | Emergency surgery and the inpatient stay |
| Rehabilitation | Weeks in a skilled nursing or rehab facility |
| Home | Paid help with groceries, bathing and stairs |
| Afterward | The loss of independence, as part of pain and suffering |
If the adjuster suggests a grandmother should have hurried through the light, California law trims the award by whatever share a jury assigns her and leaves the remainder intact (CACI 405).
The Antelope Valley Line crossings
San Fernando Boulevard parallels the Metrolink Antelope Valley Line, a track that carries freight as well as commuter trains. CBS Los Angeles covered a 2010 collision between a car and a freight train at Maclay Avenue near Truman Street (CBS Los Angeles), and a 2019 public-safety alert described a person on foot hit by a train nearby (Nixle alert).
Who may share responsibility
Crossing cases pull in parties an ordinary fender-bender never does: whoever owns the track, whoever runs the train, the city that maintains the road approach and whoever is responsible for the gates and lights. Several of those may be public bodies, which puts a written claim on a six-month clock (Gov. Code §911.2).
Watch out: Locomotives carry event recorders, and crossing signals keep activation logs. Both can be overwritten in the normal course of operations, so a preservation demand should go out within days.
When the driver keeps going
Drivers fled the scene of nine San Fernando injury crashes in 2023, and only twelve peer cities saw it happen more often. If it happened to you:
- From the emergency room, ask a relative to call the San Fernando Police Department and obtain an incident number.
- Jot down every fragment you recall: two letters of the plate, a dented door, a roof rack.
- Tell your own auto insurer, since uninsured motorist benefits are often the only money available when the car is never traced.
- Have someone canvass the street for doorbell and storefront cameras the same week.
Short answers for San Fernando residents
Does San Fernando have its own police?
It does. The department has 35 sworn officers, 25 non-sworn employees and 20 reserves. Fire engines and paramedics are a different story. They belong to the Los Angeles Fire Department, and the three stations that serve San Fernando all sit across the city line in Los Angeles:
- Station 75
- Station 91
- Station 98
Which hospital will I be taken to?
LAFD paramedics choose the destination. Providence Holy Cross Medical Center appears on the state’s trauma list as a Level II center (EMSA).
Is Metrolink to blame for an injury at the station?
A motorist who struck you in the station lot or on the way to the platform answers through an auto policy. If a train, the platform or a crossing gate caused the harm, a public transit agency may be the defendant, and its six-month notice rule controls.
Can I still recover if I had no motorcycle endorsement?
In most cases, yes. The missing endorsement is a licensing matter; it does not prove you caused the crash, and fault is decided by what each driver did in the seconds before impact.
Four freeways around a small city
Which agency has the report: A wreck on the 5, the 210, the 118 or the 405 is a Highway Patrol case, so it is missing from the OTS city figures and from San Fernando police files. Ordering that report means contacting the CHP directly with the date, direction of travel and nearest interchange.
Every one of these routes carries heavy truck traffic. When a big rig is involved, a truck accident claim reaches beyond the driver. The records that matter most are held by the company:
- The logbook device’s record of how long the driver had been working
- The truck’s own computer, which stores speed and brake application
- Dispatch messages and the driver’s hiring and training file
Each has a retention period, so the demand to preserve them should go out early.

Source: San Fernando overview. Falls while boarding, sudden-stop injuries and collisions involving any of these vehicles generally start with a written government claim within the half-year limit.
Roughly 71.2% of San Fernando residents speak Spanish at home (San Fernando overview). For a Spanish-language overview of how we work, see calljacob.com/es. Do not sign an English-only release or give a recorded statement to an adjuster in a language you are not fully comfortable with.
How long each claim stays open
The shortest deadline is the one most often missed. When the city, Metro, Metrolink or another public body shares blame for what happened, California generally requires a written government claim within six months, and a lawsuit cannot proceed without it. Suing a rideshare company or a store owner, or the driver who struck you, is generally allowed for two years (CCP §335.1), while a claim for nothing but the bent motorcycle or the crumpled car has three.
Watch out: An injured child’s own lawsuit deadline usually waits until the 18th birthday, but the six-month notice to a public agency does not wait for anyone.
If a San Fernando claim has to be tried, Los Angeles Superior Court hears it, at whichever of its district courthouses the 2024 general order assigns based on where the crash happened; we look that up by street address with the court’s locator before anything is filed (LASC General Order).
Our San Fernando practice
The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani (Call Jacob) represents riders knocked down on Truman and Maclay, seniors struck in San Fernando crosswalks, people hurt where the tracks cross the street, and commuters coming off the four freeways. On a San Fernando file we obtain the San Fernando Police Department or Highway Patrol report, identify any railroad or public agency early so the six-month claim is not lost, and send written demands to shops and transit operators to keep their video.
Rider injuries and pedestrian accidents top the local data. We also represent San Fernando clients in:
- Car accidents on Truman, Maclay and the surrounding grid
- Big-rig crashes on the 5 and bus injuries on the 761 route
- Rideshare passenger claims
- Falls at shops on Maclay and Truman, and attacks by neighborhood dogs
- Wrongful death actions brought by a widow, widower or the children
A first consultation with a San Fernando car accident attorney at Call Jacob is free of charge, and a contingency fee means no payment without a recovery. The number is (888) 952-2952. The case evaluator accepts a written account, and a representative can come to the house or to Providence Holy Cross.
