San Dimas Personal Injury Attorney
Los Angeles County
San Dimas sits where the Foothill Freeway meets State Route 57, below the San Gabriel Mountains, and that location decides a great deal after a crash. A collision on the I-210 brings different investigators, records and deadlines than one on Bonita Avenue downtown or on the way to Raging Waters. What follows is a working directory of the offices, hospitals, roads and court rules involved when someone is hurt in this foothill city, with a note on why each one matters. In practice, a San Dimas personal injury attorney contacts these offices first, and in roughly the order shown.
San Dimas in five numbers
- 32,978 San Dimas residents in the newest city-level population file (Census)
- 125 traffic victims off the freeways in 2023, a total that placed San Dimas 35th in its OTS size class (OTS)
- 19 collisions with injuries where speed was a factor, the one area where San Dimas ranked in the top third
- 955 feet of elevation in a foothill city bounded by the San Gabriel Mountains (Wikipedia)
- 2025, the year the Metro A Line’s San Dimas station opened, on September 19
Sheriff, Highway Patrol, City Hall and Metro
| Office | Covers | Record or role in a San Dimas claim |
|---|---|---|
| Sheriff’s San Dimas Station (Los Angeles County) | Foothill, Arrow, Bonita, San Dimas Avenue and the residential streets | The deputy’s traffic collision report and, if anyone was arrested, the booking record |
| California Highway Patrol | Foothill Freeway and Orange Freeway lanes and ramps | Investigation and report when the crash was on the interstate or SR-57 |
| City of San Dimas | Its own pavement, crosswalks and traffic signals | Where a six-month dangerous-road claim is sent |
| Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority | The A Line, its trains and the San Dimas platform | The address for a rail or platform injury claim |
The Sheriff’s station, the freeways and the rail stop are all described in the city’s Wikipedia entry.
San Dimas buys its police services from the County, so a deputy’s card, not a city officer’s, is what you will be handed at a Foothill Boulevard scene. Hold on to it. Before leaving the scene, make sure you have:
- the deputy’s name and the station handling the case
- the number the San Dimas Station will use to find your file later
A crash in the lanes of the 210 or the 57 brings a CHP officer, not a deputy.
Freeway victims are missing from the OTS city figures, which means every one of the 125 people in the numbers above was hurt on a San Dimas street rather than on the 210 or the 57.
From the 210 to Raging Waters
| Location | Why it comes up in San Dimas cases |
|---|---|
| Foothill Freeway, I-210 | The route west toward Pasadena and the San Fernando Valley; Highway Patrol territory |
| State Route 57 | The Orange County connection running south from the city; also Highway Patrol territory |
| Foothill Boulevard, old Route 66 | San Dimas grew along and below it, and much local traffic still uses it |
| Arrow Highway and San Dimas Avenue | The city’s main cross-town arteries, east-west and north-south |
| Gladstone Street at Ramona Avenue | Flagged in La Verne’s 2023 safety plan as a walking and biking location that needs both cities’ attention |
| Raging Waters Los Angeles, Bonelli Regional Park | Summer and weekend crowds from well beyond the city |
| San Dimas Canyon | The natural area where the city meets the mountains |
Road descriptions: Wikipedia; Gladstone and Ramona: La Verne LRSP.
Gladstone and Ramona shows how a city line complicates a claim. If faded striping or a mistimed signal there contributed to a crash, the first job is to learn whether La Verne or San Dimas maintains that piece of pavement, since the written government claim must reach the right city within six months.
Raging Waters and Bonelli Park pull in drivers from across Southern California. A visitor who rear-ends you on the way to the water park may live two counties away, so a phone photo of their license, plate and insurance card, taken before everyone leaves, saves a good deal of trouble.
Pomona Valley and the paper trail
Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, which the state lists as a Level II trauma center, is one hospital an ambulance from a San Dimas scene may use (EMSA). An ambulance crew picking up a San Dimas patient with a suspected skull fracture or spinal injury may still head somewhere else, because the destination follows the injury.
From whichever emergency room treated you, four sets of papers end up carrying most of the claim:
- the paramedics’ run report from the scene on Arrow, Foothill or the freeway shoulder
- the ER physician’s notes, CT scans and X-rays
- the discharge summary with its specialist referrals
- every later visit, from orthopedics to physical therapy
When there is a six-week hole between the ER and the first follow-up, the insurer will say the injury healed or came from something else. If a ride, a shift schedule or child care kept you from going, write that down.
San Dimas callers often ask
Someone was hurt at the San Dimas A Line platform. Who answers for it?
That turns on the cause. If a car hit them on Bonita Avenue or another street near the stop, the driver’s auto insurer is responsible. A platform fall or a train-related injury is a claim against Metro, and being a public agency, Metro must receive it in writing within six months.
Watch out: Metro, the County and the City of San Dimas are all public entities. If a Metro train, a County truck or a city crosswalk had any part in your injury, mark the date six months out on your calendar today.
A Highway Patrol officer came instead of a deputy. Why?
Because the crash was on the 210 or the 57. The CHP owns freeway investigations, while the County’s San Dimas Station works the surface streets.
My child was hurt at a water park or regional park. Is that a premises claim?
Possibly. When an unsafe condition on someone else’s property causes an injury, premises liability law applies, and when the property belongs to a public agency, the six-month claim rule does too. Our premises liability page goes into more detail.
The crash was at Gladstone and Ramona. Do I claim against San Dimas or La Verne?
If the road was part of the cause, the claim goes to whichever city maintains the signal or pavement. That intersection straddles the border, and confirming ownership is one of the first things we do.
Speed stands out in the OTS data
On the state’s combined score for 2023, San Dimas came in 63rd of 93, a quieter record than most of its peers (OTS). Speed breaks that pattern: with 19 speed-related injury crashes, the city ranked 28th, higher than in any other category.
The second-highest placement belongs to bicycle riders: 9 hurt or killed, 36th. Alcohol barely registers. Just 4 people were hurt in alcohol-involved crashes, 80th of 93, and the 14 DUI arrests recorded for San Dimas sit 15th in a column the state sorts from fewest arrests upward, so that line is a count of arrests, not a measure of danger.
Tip: After a speeding crash on San Dimas Avenue or Arrow Highway, send a written request that the other vehicle be kept intact until its crash data is downloaded. Body shops and salvage yards move quickly.
Cyclists hit on Gladstone or near the canyon can read about visibility, lane position and helmet arguments on our bicycle accident page.
Six months, two years, three years
More than one deadline can apply to the same San Dimas collision:
- Six months, when the injured person’s case points at San Dimas City Hall, La Verne, the County, Metro or Caltrans (Government Code 911.2).
- Two years, generally, for the complaint against a speeding Arrow Highway driver to reach court (CCP 335.1).
- Three years, when only a car or bicycle was damaged and nobody needed a doctor.
San Dimas has no courthouse; a lawsuit goes into the Los Angeles Superior Court, and since 2024 the crash location usually decides the district, which the court’s online locator confirms for a given intersection (LASC). Our office runs that check on each crash site instead of assuming which courthouse will hear it.
Fault can be split. Picture a jury deciding a driver on Arrow Highway was 30% to blame for the collision that injured him; under California’s comparative fault instruction, he still collects the other 70% of his proven losses (CACI 405).
What Call Jacob does for San Dimas clients
The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani (Call Jacob) represents people hurt across San Dimas, from Via Verde households and I-210 commuters to A Line riders and families spending a summer day at Bonelli Park. For each San Dimas client we pursue the right report from the San Dimas Station or the CHP, lock down speed data and storefront video, and work out within weeks whether San Dimas, La Verne, the County or Metro needs a six-month claim.
Speeding drivers and injured cyclists lead the city’s numbers, so many of our files here are car accidents and bicycle crashes. Riders injured on motorcycles near the canyon, people struck on foot downtown, truck crash victims on the 57, bus and A Line passengers, and families grieving a wrongful death are part of that San Dimas work, along with falls on unsafe property and dog bites. Clients recovering in Via Verde or near Bonita Avenue can have a San Dimas car accident lawyer from our firm visit them.
