Ripon Personal Injury Attorney

San Joaquin County

State Route 99 runs straight through Ripon, and since 1998 most of the city’s new housing has gone up on the north side of the freeway (city overview). In a town of 16,140 people (Census 2025 estimate) split by one of the Central Valley’s main truck routes, neighbors, adjusters and even tow drivers hand out confident advice after a crash, and some of it is wrong. Before anything else, a Ripon personal injury attorney usually has to untangle a handful of those beliefs. Seven of them are below, each checked against public records and California law, with a one-table summary at the end.

Myths about the numbers and the report

Small city totals mean small injuries

By the state’s 2023 tally, Ripon’s own streets produced 16 injury or fatality victims, which ranked 86th of the 103 cities sharing its population bracket, 1 being the worst (OTS 2023). Ripon placed 55th on the composite, reported zero pedestrian victims (99th), and logged just 2 speed-related and 1 late-night injury crash, both in the 80s on the list.

The correction: The city figures leave out what happens on SR-99, which the CHP patrols. Rebuilt in 2003, the Jack Tone Road interchange now anchors a Love’s and a Flying J truck stop plus restaurants and a shopping center (city overview), so the heaviest traffic near town never enters its OTS line. A favorable ranking for the town tells a jury nothing about how one person was injured at one ramp.

Every report is at the Wilma Avenue station

The correction: The station at 259 North Wilma Avenue keeps only the reports its own officers take on Ripon streets (police department page). The freeway, including the Jack Tone Road ramps, belongs to the California Highway Patrol. Even a police motorcycle officer was hurt in a crash on northbound SR-99 near Jack Tone Road, as CBS Sacramento reported in a story that carries no date (CBS Sacramento).

Tip: Glance at the shoulder patch before the officer drives off. A Ripon Police patch means a Wilma Avenue request; a Highway Patrol patch means the CHP, and mixing them up delays everything else.

Myths about trucks, drinking and fleeing drivers

The trucker’s own policy is all there is

Big rigs swinging into the Love’s and the Flying J share the Jack Tone ramps with families driving home to the subdivisions north of the freeway. The correction: In a tractor-trailer collision, the dispatching carrier, the shipper that loaded the trailer and the trailer’s owner can each be liable alongside the driver, and federal rules leave a paper trail that a car crash never creates, from electronic logging devices to inspection reports and the truck stop’s own cameras. The carrier records worth requesting after a Jack Tone Road crash are described on our truck accident page.

The same logic reaches the orchards. Ripon is known for high almond production, and harvest equipment and farm trucks move along the rural roads outside town, so a collision with an orchard tractor raises the question of which grower or contractor employed its operator.

Impaired drivers are a big-city problem

Alcohol figured in the injuries of 4 people in the city in 2023 (57th of 103), and drinking drivers between 21 and 34 hurt 2 (51st), so by most measures the city sat in the middle of its group. The correction: Ripon’s worst placing in the entire 2023 table came from one victim of a drinking driver younger than 21, enough for 22nd of 103. On enforcement, Ripon police booked 24 impaired drivers; OTS lists that category with the fewest arrests at the top, so a 41st-place finish is simply mid-pack. When an underage driver causes the harm, the insurer for the car’s registered owner usually becomes involved, and a California jury can award punitive damages against a driver whose intoxication showed conscious disregard for others.

A fleeing driver leaves nothing to collect

Hit-and-run drivers accounted for 4 injury crashes that year, and OTS placed the city 32nd on that measure. The correction: A hit-and-run is the situation uninsured motorist coverage was designed for; your own policy steps in when the fleeing driver is never identified, as long as you report the crash promptly and give the carrier written notice on its terms.

Two myths about time and distance

There is plenty of time

  • Six months for a written claim when public property or a public vehicle helped cause the crash, such as a Ripon city truck, a county road shoulder near the orchards, or a Caltrans defect on the freeway (Gov. Code §911.2).
  • Two years to sue a negligent driver, a freight hauler from the Jack Tone truck stops, or a grower whose equipment was on the road (CCP §335.1).

County roads near the city have a documented record. The County’s 2023 Local Roadway Safety Plan, covering 2015 through 2019 on the roads it maintains, tallied 12,567 collisions, with impaired driving the leading factor in the fatal and serious ones at 29% (County LRSP). If an insurer says you took an orchard-road curve too fast, California’s comparative fault rule trims your award by whatever share a jury assigns you instead of wiping it out (CACI 405).

A local courtroom will hear the case

The correction: Lodi and Manteca have courthouses, yet the court’s Civil Department page names only Stockton, at 180 E. Weber Ave., 2nd Floor (Superior Court). Serious trauma cases from Ripon leave town too, since the state’s list for the county names only San Joaquin General in French Camp, at Level II (EMSA).

Other questions we hear

A car hit my son’s bike near Ripon High. Which policy covers him?

Start with the liability coverage of the driver who hit him. Should that driver turn out to be uninsured, the UM coverage on your family’s own auto policy generally extends to a teenager riding a bicycle.

Does the planned ACE station change anything?

An Altamont Corridor Express stop in town is planned, with service targeted for 2027 (city overview). Once trains run, an injury on a publicly operated train or platform would bring the six-month claim rule with it.

The driver who hit me was a Ripon teenager who had been drinking. Are the parents responsible?

Possibly, in part. Under Vehicle Code sections 17707 and 17150, the adult who signed a minor’s license application and the owner of the car can each be held liable for a teen driver’s negligence up to limits set by statute, and the teen’s own liability, along with the household’s auto policy, sits on top of that.

I was rear-ended on the Jack Tone Road off-ramp. Is that a Ripon police matter?

Usually not. Freeway ramps are state highway, so the CHP generally writes that report; confirm with the officer who responds.

Our Ripon practice

The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani (Call Jacob) represents people hurt in Ripon, from crashes on neighborhood streets north of the freeway to collisions at the Jack Tone Road truck stops and on the county roads among the almond orchards. In the first week of a Ripon case we handle three tasks: getting the Ripon Police or CHP report, asking the Love’s, the Flying J and nearby businesses in writing to keep their video, and checking whether a claim against the City, the County or Caltrans has to be filed inside six months. Because SR-99 cuts the city in half, we pay particular attention to freeway car accident and big-rig claims. Beyond those, our firm represents Ripon residents in drunk-driving and hit-and-run cases, motorcycle and bicycle crashes, pedestrian injuries to schoolchildren, farm-equipment collisions, dog bites, premises injuries and wrongful death claims.

A consultation about a Ripon crash can happen at your kitchen table or by phone, it is free, and a Ripon car accident attorney from our office charges a fee only if money is recovered for you. Phone (888) 952-2952, or put the crash in writing on our evaluation form. Español: calljacob.com/es.
