Redding Personal Injury Attorney

Most people who contact a Redding personal injury attorney have one urgent question rather than a general interest in the law. For that reason, this page puts the questions first. Choose the one closest to yours. Each answer draws on Redding and Shasta County specifics, from the trauma center at Mercy on Rosaline Avenue to the Main Courthouse on Court Street.

Redding at a glance

  • 94,092 residents in mid-2025, according to the Census Bureau
  • 271 people dead or hurt on Redding roads in 2023, by the state’s count (OTS)
  • Motorcycle injuries are the city’s poorest ranking, at 30th of 103
  • Serious injuries go to the Level II trauma program at Mercy on Rosaline Avenue

Is Redding more dangerous than its peer cities?

Redding fares better than most of its peers, with one notable exception for motorcyclists.

The state measures Redding against 102 other Group C cities of similar population, numbering the worst performer 1 (OTS).

Redding, 2023CountPeer rank
All victims27173
Motorcyclists1930
Bicyclists2152
Pedestrians2158
Speed-related4066
Alcohol-involved2376
Hit-and-run1376

Rankings of 97th for late-night crashes and 76th for alcohol suggest that Redding’s injury crashes are not driven mainly by drinking after dark. Redding officers nonetheless booked 249 suspected impaired drivers that year. The figure that stands out is in the motorcycle row.

Should motorcyclists be concerned about Redding’s numbers?

Motorcycle injuries are the one category in which Redding falls in the worse half of its group: 30th of 103, compared with 73rd for all victims (OTS). The ranking does not explain the causes, so be skeptical of anyone who claims to know them. For a rider’s claim, three points follow:

  • The most common dispute involves a left-turning driver who “didn’t see the motorcycle.” Photographs of sight lines, sun angle and parked vehicles answer that claim better than argument does.
  • Insurers often raise the rider’s helmet and gear. Under comparative fault, those arguments can reduce a rider’s award but cannot eliminate it (CACI 405).
  • Fractures, road rash and head injuries often require a long course of treatment before a claim can be valued.

Tip: Put the helmet and jacket in a bag without cleaning them. Scuffs and cracks show where the impacts occurred, and adjusters pay attention to them.

A motorcycle accident attorney in Redding will also look closely at whether the other driver was using a phone, because the city’s safety-plan update identifies distracted driving as a concern. Riders hurt on Victor or Cypress Avenue can find more on our motorcycle accident page.

Quick answers for Shasta County residents

I was rear-ended on I-5 in Redding. Did the CHP or RPD respond?

Almost certainly the Highway Patrol. Officers from the Cascade Boulevard office cover the 5 as it runs through town, even inside city limits.

The driver who hit me on Hartnell had no insurance. What coverage applies?

Look at the declarations page of your own auto policy; if it lists uninsured motorist coverage, that is the claim to open. With 13 hit-and-run injury crashes in the city in 2023, a car accident lawyer in Redding sees these claims more often than people expect.

I live in Anderson. Does my address change anything?

Which side of the city line the crash fell on decides whether RPD or the CHP investigates. Your home address rarely matters, and a lawsuit would still normally be filed in Shasta County.

Are Redding auto accident claims worth less than claims in big cities?

No rule says so. Value depends on the injury, the medical bills, lost income, fault and the available policy limits. The community from which a jury is drawn can affect trial outcomes, which is why the venue is considered when a case is valued.

Has the city flagged Hartnell and Cypress Avenues?

The city has identified two. A City of Redding staff report prepared for a federal Safe Streets for All grant mapped fatal and severe-injury crashes from 2015 to 2019 and found a high concentration along Hartnell Avenue; its map of all crashes also showed a cluster along Cypress Avenue (City of Redding staff report).

The city is updating its Local Road Safety Plan, which examines crash patterns citywide along with pedestrian and bicycle safety, distraction and aggressive driving (CEQAnet). It has also committed funds. The Victor and Cypress Avenues Active Transportation Project covers sections of Victor Avenue, Hartnell Avenue and Cypress Avenue, with the stated goal of making walking and biking safer (City of Redding). Construction zones carry their own risks, such as shifted lanes and missing crosswalk markings. If a work zone contributed to your crash, both the contractor and the city may share responsibility.

If you were hurt on Hartnell or Cypress, those city documents can justify a request for signal timing, lane-design and prior-crash records, although they cannot by themselves prove the other driver was careless.

Should I ask RPD or the CHP for the report?

Crash locationReporting agencyPhone
Hartnell, Cypress, downtown, other city streetsRedding Police Department(530) 225-4200 (RPD)
I-5 and state routes through townCHP Redding Area (135), 2503 Cascade Blvd.(530) 225-0500 (CHP)

Getting the RPD or CHP report does not satisfy your own duty to the DMV. You must send the SR-1 to the DMV within 10 days of any crash that causes an injury or more than $1,000 in damage, and failing to do so can put your license at risk (California DMV).

What should I save from my stay at Mercy?

Mercy, at 2175 Rosaline Avenue, operates a Level II trauma center and an emergency department open around the clock (Dignity Health), so most seriously injured people in the area are treated there. Dignity Health describes Mercy as one of the only Level II trauma centers north of Sacramento (Dignity Health), and patients from well outside the city are often taken there as well. Keep:

  1. The emergency department discharge packet, including the list of every part of the body examined. Neck and back pain from whiplash can build over several days, and a chart that records it early is difficult to dispute.
  2. Every follow-up referral, and proof that you attended. Gaps between appointments are the first thing an adjuster will point to.
  3. Records from any other facility if you were flown or transferred, because each one bills separately and may assert its own lien.

What if the city or a RABA bus was responsible?

When the responsible party is the city, Caltrans or RABA rather than a private driver, the first deadline is about six months. Government Code §911.2 generally requires a written injury claim to reach the public entity within that time (statute). The City of Redding posts its claim form online and keeps paper copies at the City Clerk’s counter on the third floor of City Hall; its Risk Management line is 530-225-4385 (City of Redding). The Redding Area Bus Authority (RABA) is a public transit agency, so a claim arising from a bus collision follows the same process. The same applies to a pothole or a collision with a city truck.

Watch out: Six months passes quickly during surgery and rehabilitation. If a public agency may share responsibility, raise it in the first week, not after therapy ends.

When is the deadline, and which court hears it?

Against another motorist, California’s general limit is two years, measured from the day of the crash (CCP §335.1). Claims for the car itself get a third year, and a minor’s case is timed differently. These are outer limits with exceptions, not dates to aim for.

Most Redding claims settle. When one does not, a Shasta County personal injury attorney files the lawsuit with the Superior Court’s Civil Division at the Main Courthouse, 1515 Court Street, which hears cases seeking damages for personal injury (Shasta Superior Court).

Redding also faces a different kind of injury risk. The 2018 Carr Fire burned 229,651 acres in Shasta and Trinity counties, destroyed 1,614 structures and killed seven civilians (CAL FIRE). Wildfire losses are governed by different rules than road crashes; see our wildfire page.

Is a Redding personal injury attorney worth the fee?

Many people can request a report, file an SR-1 and keep their Mercy paperwork without help, and an injury lawyer in Redding adds little to those tasks. The work where people most often lose money is harder: finding every layer of insurance, including your own underinsured motorist coverage; persuading businesses along Cypress or Hartnell to preserve video before it is recorded over; deciding whether to give the other insurer a recorded interview; and turning months of missed work and pain into a demand an insurer takes seriously, after medical liens are paid.

Call Jacob represents Redding residents and I-5 travelers injured on Cypress, on Hartnell or near the Sundial Bridge and Turtle Bay, and we prepare each claim with the Redding PD or CHP report, the Mercy Medical Center records and the Court Street courthouse’s civil rules in mind. We handle semi-truck collisions on I-5, motorcyclists cut off at Victor and Cypress, pedestrians and cyclists struck downtown or in Enterprise, slip-and-fall injuries in stores near Churn Creek, dog bites and wrongful death claims for Shasta County families.

Nothing is due when you hire us for a Redding case; our fee depends on winning it. Because many Shasta County clients live far from any office, a representative can meet you at home in Redding, Anderson or elsewhere in the county. You can call (888) 952-2952 from a room at Mercy or from home. The case evaluator gathers the facts of a Shasta County crash online, and our car accident overview and the Spanish-language site at calljacob.com/es are also available.
