Rancho Cordova Personal Injury Attorney
Sacramento County
When a Rancho Cordova police officer arrives at your crash, the person in uniform is a Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy. The city has contracted with the Sheriff’s Office for police services since it incorporated on July 1, 2003, and the roughly 70 sworn deputies assigned here wear “Rancho Cordova” patches (Rancho Cordova overview). That arrangement, and a few others like it, decides where your records come from. As a Rancho Cordova personal injury attorney, Call Jacob keeps this directory so injured people and their families know which office holds what.
The city is also growing quickly. The Census Bureau estimates 87,554 residents as of July 2025, up from an April 2020 base of 79,333, with 2,620 added in the last year alone (Census Vintage 2025). New subdivisions in the Villages of Zinfandel, Stonecreek and around Mather send more cars onto the same arterials every year.
At a glance — Rancho Cordova
- Police: Sheriff’s deputies wearing city patches, under a contract dating to incorporation
- Highway 50 and Folsom Boulevard run side by side through the city
- Rail: three Gold Line stations, opened June 2004 (Gold Line)
- Worst 2023 showing: crashes caused by drinking drivers under 21, ranked 11th of 103 cities
Offices that document a crash here
| Who | Where they come in | Ask them for |
|---|---|---|
| Rancho Cordova Police Department, staffed by Sheriff’s deputies | Collisions on Folsom Boulevard, Sunrise Boulevard, Coloma Road and neighborhood streets | The Sheriff’s report number printed on the deputy’s card |
| California Highway Patrol | Highway 50 and its ramps, including the Sunrise Boulevard off-ramp | The CHP area office name, since that office releases the report |
| City of Rancho Cordova Public Works | Coloma Road boulders, Sunrise and Folsom safety projects, signals and crosswalks | Prior complaints and project files when road design is in question |
| SacRT | Gold Line trains at Zinfandel, Cordova Town Center and Sunrise stations, and SacRT buses | An incident number, plus a written government claim within six months |
Which CHP office handles a given crash is not always obvious. The CHP’s South Sacramento Area counts Highway 50 among its assigned freeways (CHP Area 252), yet news coverage of a fatal February 2025 crash on Sunrise Boulevard at Bosphorus Drive reported that a CHP East Sacramento office investigated it (Citrus Heights Sentinel). Write down whichever area office appears on the officer’s card, because that is where the report must be requested. If the insurer will not pay fairly, the case goes to the Sacramento County Superior Court (court overview); we have not named a courthouse because the court’s civil filing locations could not be verified for this page, so we check with the clerk before filing.
Watch out: Rancho Cordova and SacRT are public entities, so notice of a claim involving a city street, a signal, a Gold Line train or a SacRT bus is due six months after the injury under Gov. Code §911.2, far sooner than most people expect.
What the state rankings show
The Office of Traffic Safety places Rancho Cordova among Group C’s 103 similar-sized cities. A rank of 1 there is the worst record, and wrecks on Highway 50 that the CHP handles stay out of the city’s totals (OTS 2023).
On sheer volume the city looks unremarkable: 271 people were killed or injured on its streets in 2023, which placed it 69th. The outlier is youth and alcohol. Drivers under 21 who had been drinking hurt or killed seven people, a small number that nonetheless ranked 11th, the city’s worst showing in any category.
Speed shows up as well: speeding figured in 53 of the city’s injury crashes, roughly one in every five, and that count ranked 40th. Motorcycle riders and people on foot each accounted for 18 casualties (41st and 60th). The late-night window from nine o’clock to three in the morning produced 29 injury crashes, and in 20 crashes the responsible driver left before deputies arrived.
Composite rank: 36 of 103. Combining the categories, OTS placed Rancho Cordova in the worse half of its group despite a below-median victim total.
A crash caused by an underage drinking driver raises questions beyond that driver’s own policy, including whether the vehicle’s owner or an adult who supplied the alcohol shares responsibility.
Roads the city has already studied
Rancho Cordova has looked hard at its own streets. A Systemic Safety Study, funded at $64,372 over fiscal years 2018/19 and 2019/20, identified high-risk corridors and intersections and produced a prioritized list of state safety-funded projects on Sunrise Boulevard and Folsom Boulevard. A follow-on Local Road Safety Plan, budgeted at $95,400 and completed in fiscal 2021/22, analyzed citywide crash trends and high-crash intersections (City of Rancho Cordova project pages). The plan’s location list was not available for this page, so we do not repeat any ranking from it.
When the city has studied a road and planned work on it, that history becomes relevant if a design problem contributed to your crash. A study alone does not prove the city was at fault, but it tells us which public records to request first. Several corridors stand out in the public record.
Coloma Road
About 18,000 vehicles a day use Coloma Road. A January 2020 crash into a home killed a grandmother and injured two people; the city then placed 700-pound boulders in the front yard, another car overturned there less than ten months later, and two more cars struck the boulders on August 20, 2024. The city is studying a reduction to one lane in each direction (CBS Sacramento).
Folsom Boulevard
The historic route toward the foothills runs beside Highway 50 and the Gold Line. On April 1, 2024, a pedestrian struck near Mine Shaft Lane later died; the Sheriff’s Office investigated (news report).
Sunrise Boulevard
Beyond the 2025 canal-wall crash at Bosphorus Drive, a woman died in June 2021 when her minivan hit a sound wall on the Highway 50 off-ramp to Sunrise (CBS Sacramento).
Highway 50
In February 2012 a wrong-way driver in the westbound lanes near Folsom Boulevard hit an SUV head-on and killed three people; the CHP booked him on suspicion of DUI (CBS Sacramento).
Hospitals that treat serious injuries
The August 2025 state trauma list places every designated center for this area outside the city limits (EMSA). A transfer from Kaiser South Sacramento or Mercy San Juan to UC Davis is itself evidence of how serious the injury was, and it means two sets of records to collect.
| Center | Designation | Records note |
|---|---|---|
| UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento | Level I, adults and children | The only one of the three with a pediatric designation; request a child’s chart separately |
| Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento | Level II for adults | Kaiser members can ask for the trauma admission and later Kaiser visits in one release |
| Mercy San Juan Medical Center, Carmichael | Level II for adults | North of the American River; ask for surgical and imaging records along with emergency notes |
Questions from Rancho Cordova families
Why does my report say Sheriff’s Office if the officer said Rancho Cordova Police?
Both labels are accurate. The patch on the deputy’s sleeve says Rancho Cordova, but the department has been staffed by Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies since the city’s 2003 incorporation, so the report is a Sheriff’s record.
My teenager was hit by a young driver who had been drinking. Who else could be responsible?
Possibly the vehicle’s owner, and in some situations an adult who supplied alcohol to a minor. Victims of drinking drivers under 21 were Rancho Cordova’s highest-ranked crash category in 2023, 11th of 103 cities, so this is a question we review carefully.
A car went off Coloma Road and hit our house. Is that a personal injury case?
If anyone was hurt, yes, and the damage to the house is recoverable too. The driver’s insurance is the usual starting point, and the city’s ongoing work on Coloma Road becomes relevant if road design is at issue.
I ride the Gold Line. What happens if I’m hurt at a station or on a train?
Because SacRT is public, the first step is a written government claim, due within six months of the fall or collision; a lawsuit follows only if SacRT rejects it. Write down three things while they are fresh:
- The station: Zinfandel, Cordova Town Center or Sunrise
- The time and the train or bus number
- Any SacRT employee who spoke with you
Records worth requesting early
Store and parking-lot video is routinely recorded over within days, so a written preservation request to the business should go out first. The rest of this list can follow over the next week or two.
- The deputy’s or CHP officer’s report, requested from the agency named on the card
- Charts from UC Davis, Kaiser South Sacramento, Mercy San Juan or any urgent care you visited
- Your own phone photos of the lane markings, debris and damage at the Folsom, Sunrise or Coloma scene
- Camera footage from shopping centers along Folsom Boulevard and near Cordova Town Center
- A SacRT incident number for any Gold Line or bus event, with the station name and time
- Your declarations page, to see whether uninsured motorist limits cover a driver who fled or had no policy
Deadlines under California law
| Situation | Deadline | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Injury lawsuit against a private driver (CCP §335.1) | Two years | Hurt on Sunrise Boulevard in March 2026: file by March 2028 |
| Written claim to the city or SacRT | Six months | Hurt on a Gold Line platform in March 2026: claim due in September 2026 |
| Vehicle and property damage | Three years | The car or the house on Coloma Road |
| Injured child | Separate rules | Ask before relying on any date above |
Missing the six-month notice can end a claim against the city or SacRT before it starts.
California shares fault among everyone involved instead of barring an injured person who made a mistake. Suppose a jury finds a motorcyclist on Coloma Road 20% responsible for a collision with a car pulling out of a driveway: the rider still recovers 80% of proven damages (CACI 405).
