Pomona Personal Injury Attorney

Los Angeles County

If you were hurt in Pomona after dark, you are part of the pattern that sets this city apart. Only four of California’s 62 comparably sized cities ranked worse for injury and fatal crashes between 9 at night and 3 in the morning in 2023, and only seven ranked worse for hit-and-run (state Office of Traffic Safety rankings for Pomona). As a Pomona personal injury attorney, Call Jacob sees what those numbers mean in practice: pedestrians struck at night on Holt and Mission, and drivers who leave before police arrive.

Different people in Pomona face different hazards, and their claims rest on different evidence. Below, each group of road users is taken separately, from students at Cal Poly Pomona to drivers on the 60 Freeway to visitors at Fairplex.

Who is most at risk in Pomona

Pomona’s 147,807 residents (Census Bureau, Vintage 2025) live with a composite OTS rank of 19, built from 783 deaths and injuries on city streets in 2023. The groups that follow appear in roughly the order the data singles them out, and in the table a rank of 1 is the worst of 62.

People out late at night

Nowhere did Pomona rank worse in 2023 than for these late-night crashes: 106 of them injured or killed someone. MyNewsLA reported in July 2026 that a man died in an apparent hit-and-run in the 600 block of West Mission Boulevard at South Rebecca Street, after a call that came in shortly before 11 at night (MyNewsLA report via Ground News). CBS Los Angeles reported that a 23-year-old woman was struck and killed on Garey Avenue near Center Street at about 1:30 in the morning, and that police later arrested a 20-year-old driver (CBS Los Angeles on the Garey Avenue arrest).

A night case usually comes down to what each person could see. Expect the driver’s insurer to ask about street lighting on that block of Mission or Garey, the color of your clothing and whether you were inside a marked crosswalk. Photographs taken at the same hour on a later night show the real conditions far better than daytime pictures do, so we take them early.

Watch out: People hurt late at night are often in an ambulance before anyone takes their statement. As soon as you are able, write down the time, your direction of travel and whatever you recall about the car, because officers working a Pomona hit-and-run may be relying on your account.

When the driver flees

Ninety-four Pomona crashes in 2023 ended with an injured or dead victim and no driver at the scene; that total put the city eighth among the 62 Group B cities. When the person who hit you is never found, the money for your injuries usually has to come from your own auto policy.

  • Ask a relative to request the Pomona police report number while you are still in the hospital
  • Notify your insurer in writing that the other driver fled, and ask which uninsured motorist (UM) and med-pay limits apply
  • List the businesses on that stretch of Holt, Garey or Mission whose cameras could have recorded the car
  • Save any broken mirror, trim or headlight glass the other car left behind
  • Find out whether a relative’s auto policy in your household also covers you

Even though it is your own insurer, the company handling a Pomona hit-and-run UM claim will assign an adjuster who evaluates the claim closely, so a recorded statement should wait until you have had legal advice.

On foot along Holt, Garey and Mission

People on foot fared worse in Pomona than in most cities its size: 69 were killed or injured in 2023, the ninth-highest figure of the 62. Holt Avenue, the historic Route 66 alignment through downtown, crosses Garey Avenue, and CBS Los Angeles reported a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run at that intersection in November 2015 (CBS Los Angeles on the Holt and Garey crash). The station also covered a separate fatal crash involving a woman in her 50s in the 900 block of Holt (CBS Los Angeles on the 900 block of Holt).

A $400,000 Safe Streets and Roads for All grant, announced by Rep. Norma Torres in December 2023, is paying for the Pomona Safety Action Plan (Torres announcement of the Pomona grant). That plan builds on the city’s earlier Local Roadway Safety Plan and adds a High Injury Network, shown to residents at a September 2025 community meeting (Pomona Public Works safety plan page).

When a crosswalk, signal or street design on that network played a part in your injury, the City of Pomona may share responsibility with the driver. Pomona must receive that claim within six months (Government Code §911.2); a late claim can be rejected outright even though the driver can still be sued for two years. Our pedestrian accident page goes further into claims involving both a motorist and a public street.

Students and bicycle riders near campus

The Poly Post puts Cal Poly Pomona’s enrollment at roughly 27,700, with 27,740 projected for 2025-26 (Poly Post enrollment report). That population adds thousands of student drivers, riders and walkers to the roads around campus. Pomona’s 2023 bicycle numbers, 42 riders killed or injured and a 17th-place rank, sit in the upper third of its group.

Students sometimes assume that an injury claim has to wait until the term ends or that it must be brought in their home state. Neither is true. A student injured in Pomona can claim lost wages from an on-campus job, and a claim brought here follows California law. When a car turns across a cyclist’s path and the driver says the rider “came out of nowhere,” lane position, bike lights and witness accounts carry the case; our bicycle accident page explains how.

Drivers on the 60, 10 and 57

Interstate 10, the 60 and the 57/60 interchange fall within the territory of the CHP’s Baldwin Park Area office, at 14039 Francisquito Avenue, which means a crash on one of them is documented by CHP officers rather than Pomona police (CHP Baldwin Park Area page).

FOX 11 reported a wrong-way DUI crash on the westbound 60 near Reservoir Street that killed four people, one of them a 1-year-old, and in a separate story a fatal rollover on the eastbound 60 at Garey Avenue (FOX 11 on the wrong-way crash; FOX 11 on the Garey Avenue rollover). When a freeway crash in Pomona involves several vehicles, a commercial truck or a rideshare car, every insurer involved tends to point at someone else. The CHP diagram, each vehicle’s event data recorder and any dashcam video need to be secured before they are lost.

Rail riders and fair visitors

Metro opened its 9.1-mile, roughly $1.5 billion A Line extension from Glendora to Pomona North on Sept. 19, 2025 (Streetsblog California on the A Line opening). The extension brought new rail crossings, station traffic and new riders to the north side of town. Because Metro is a public agency, an injury involving a train, a platform or station property starts with a government claim on the six-month clock.

The LA County Fair at Fairplex counted 787,843 visitors in 2024 (Los Angeles County Fair article). During fair season, that crowd and its traffic share the surrounding Pomona streets with residents. A crash in event traffic, a fall on fairgrounds property and an injury in a parking area each point to a different responsible party, and naming the right one at the outset protects the claim.

Answers about reports, coverage and deadlines

I was hit on Garey Avenue. Which agency wrote the police report?

Garey Avenue is a city street, so the Pomona Police Department wrote the report and releases copies; on the 60, 10 or 57 the report would instead come from CHP Baldwin Park.

Nobody caught the driver who hit me on Mission Boulevard. Can I still be paid?

In most cases your own uninsured motorist coverage pays, supplemented by health insurance and any med-pay on the policy, provided the crash on Mission was reported to police promptly.

I was crossing at night in dark clothes. Does that end my case?

No. Clothing and lighting may reduce the award under comparative fault, but drivers on Pomona streets must still watch for people walking after dark.

Does an injury at the Pomona North station have a different deadline?

Often, yes. Metro is a public agency, and the six-month government claim deadline covers riders hurt aboard A Line trains as well as people injured at Pomona North.

My daughter studies at Cal Poly Pomona but lives in another state. Where is her claim handled?

In California. A crash in Pomona is generally governed by California law, and we can meet her in Pomona or work with her by phone and video once she goes home.

Trauma care at Pomona Valley Hospital

The hospital earned its Level II trauma designation in March 2017, becoming the 15th trauma center in Los Angeles County after adding 23 emergency beds and a 12-bed intensive care unit (PVHMC history page). LA County Fire has counted more than 4,700 trauma activations there since (LA County Fire trauma survivor story).

Since this is the trauma center inside the city, the Pomona Valley chart is often the most important document in a serious Pomona case. Rather than an itemized bill, ask the hospital’s records department for:

  • Trauma team notes from your arrival in the emergency department
  • Every imaging study and its written interpretation
  • Operative reports, if you had surgery
  • The discharge plan, including physical therapy and specialist referrals

Any lien that Pomona Valley or your health plan places on the claim comes out of the settlement, so its exact balance should be settled in writing before you accept an offer.

East District filing and time limits

A Pomona lawsuit does not go downtown by default. Under the court’s 2024 general order, cases that arise here belong to the East District and are generally filed at Pomona Courthouse South, 400 Civic Center Plaza (county facility listing for Pomona Courthouse South). Courtroom assignments for injury cases there are made by the court, so we verify them on the court’s filing locator first.

How long you haveFor what
Six monthsPomona crosswalk or signal defects, and anything involving Metro's A Line trains or stations
Two yearsA lawsuit after a car crash or a fall on someone's property

A pedestrian partly at fault still has a claim. California’s pure comparative fault rule (CACI 405 jury instruction) trims the award by the injured person’s share, so someone found 25% responsible for crossing Holt outside a crosswalk keeps 75% of the proven damages.

Representation for Pomona injury victims

Call Jacob handles injury cases for Pomona residents, Cal Poly Pomona students and freeway commuters, and on each one we begin by collecting the records specific to where the crash happened: the Pomona police report or the CHP Baldwin Park report, video from businesses along Holt and Garey, and the trauma chart from Pomona Valley Hospital. We represent people struck while walking, riders hit near campus, motorcyclists, rideshare passengers and drivers injured in car accidents and truck crashes on the 60 and 10. Hit-and-run victims claiming under their own UM policies, A Line passengers with claims against Metro, shoppers hurt in falls at local businesses, dog bite victims and families bringing wrongful death claims are also among the Pomona clients we serve.

If you are still at Pomona Valley or recovering at home, one of our representatives will meet you there. We work on contingency, which means no fee at all unless we win, and the first meeting with a Pomona car accident lawyer at Call Jacob is free. (888) 952-2952 is the fastest way to reach us, and the online case evaluator works if you prefer to write. Si el accidente ocurrió en Holt, Garey o Mission y prefiere hablar en español, visite calljacob.com/es.

This is general information, not legal advice; how Pomona’s trauma care, East District filing rules and claim deadlines apply depends on your own facts.
