Paramount Personal Injury Attorney
Los Angeles County
Paramount began as a dairy and hay town and is now a city of 50,755 wedged between three freeways (Census). Its streets carry a crash burden far out of proportion to that size: the Office of Traffic Safety placed it 9th worst of 103 peer cities on its composite measure for 2023, with 271 people killed or injured and three separate categories ranked 5th worst (OTS). As Paramount personal injury attorneys, we hear certain beliefs about injury claims that the facts do not support, and seven of them are taken up below.
Paramount among 103 peer cities
| Paramount, 2023 | Count | Rank of 103 |
|---|---|---|
| Composite ranking | — | 9 |
| All victims | 271 | 8 |
| Nighttime crashes | 37 | 5 |
| Hit-and-run crashes | 31 | 5 |
| Drinking drivers under 21 | 6 | 5 |
| Motorcyclists | 13 | 8 |
| Alcohol-involved victims | 27 | 24 |
| Speed-related crashes | 32 | 25 |
| DUI arrests (low = few) | 25 | 11 |
Read the ranks from the top: first place is the worst result, except in the arrest row, where first place means a city booked the fewest drunk drivers for its population.
The Lakewood Station and the CHP
Belief: “I’ll pick up the report from Paramount PD.”
Paramount has no police department of its own. Patrol comes from the Los Angeles County Sheriff, through the Lakewood Station that serves Paramount and a Paramount Substation inside city limits (Wikipedia). A crash on Paramount Boulevard, the street the city is named for, is a Sheriff’s matter, and the number on the deputy’s business card is how the Lakewood records staff will locate it.
The Century Freeway slices through the north end of town, the Long Beach Freeway follows the western boundary, and the Artesia Freeway runs less than half a mile beyond the southern line; the Highway Patrol handles all three, which is also why those crashes are absent from the table above.
When the other driver disappears
Belief: “The driver took off, so there is nobody to collect from.”
Thirty-one Paramount collisions with injuries or deaths in 2023 ended with a driver leaving the scene, a figure only four peer cities exceeded. For most of those victims, the money comes from the uninsured motorist portion of their own auto policy, which California insurers generally extend to a policyholder and relatives in the home whether they were driving, riding along or crossing on foot. That coverage carries a condition worth knowing: a prompt report to law enforcement, so call the Sheriff even without a plate.
Paramount Boulevard’s gas stations, markets and auto shops point cameras at the street, and a fleeing car usually passes several of them. Each system recycles its storage, so a Paramount hit-and-run lawyer sends preservation requests in the first few days.
After dark on Paramount Boulevard
Belief: “It happened after midnight with no witnesses. It’s my word against his.”
Thirty-seven of Paramount’s 2023 injury crashes happened between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., a late-night count that only four peer cities topped. Twenty-seven people were casualties of alcohol-involved crashes, and the six people hurt by drinking drivers under 21 put Paramount 5th worst in that category as well. Yet Sheriff’s deputies booked only 25 drivers for DUI that year, so few for a city this size that just ten peer cities arrested fewer.
An unarrested driver can still be shown to have been impaired. The proof tends to come from four places:
- Credit-card charges at a bar or restaurant
- The hour the driver left a party
- A passenger’s account of the evening
- The event data recorder in the car’s airbag module
Note: A drinking driver younger than 21 may be listed on a parent’s auto policy, which we check early when the at-fault driver is a teenager.
Briefer answers
Which Sheriff’s office keeps my report?
The Lakewood Station serves the city, and your report number is the key either way.
The truck that hit me was hauling a container from the port. Who is responsible?
The driver and the motor carrier first. A shipper, a loader or a maintenance contractor can share responsibility when a load shifted or a part failed, and the carrier’s own documents show which.
My 17-year-old was a passenger with a driver who had been drinking. Does he have a claim?
Generally yes. Because he is a minor, his own filing deadline is extended, but the bar receipts and phone records that prove drinking are not, so start now.
My crash was on the 105, not a city street. Who investigates?
The Highway Patrol. Deputies from Lakewood cover Paramount’s surface streets, but the Century Freeway, the 710 and the 91 are CHP roads, so a Paramount car accident attorney requests that report from the CHP.
Will a work-zone crash claim go to Metro or to the contractor?
Possibly both. Whoever controlled the closure is examined first, and if Metro is among them, its six-month claim deadline sets the pace.
Motorcycles and port trucks
“As a rider, I will be blamed regardless”
On the motorcycle side, Paramount’s 2023 tally of 13 riders hurt or killed ranked 8th of 103. Adjusters do lean on rider fault, but California’s comparative fault rule lets a jury set percentages, and a motorcyclist assigned 30% of the blame for a crash at a Paramount Boulevard signal still collects the other 70% of proven damages (CACI 405). Before speaking with a Paramount motorcycle accident attorney, a rider can read how these claims are valued and what proof the insurer will want.
“A semi on the 710 is the trucker’s problem”
The Long Beach Freeway is the main truck route to and from the ports, and it forms Paramount’s western edge. A motor carrier generally answers for a driver’s negligence on the job, and its policy limits tend to dwarf a commuter’s. Hours-of-service logs, inspection files and the tractor’s electronic records are the evidence, and carriers are not required to keep them forever; our truck accident page describes what those files contain. A Paramount truck accident lawyer asks for them in the first letter to the carrier.
Southeast Gateway Line work zones
Belief: “The lanes were closed for construction, so nobody is at fault.”
Lane closures for design and utility work on Metro’s Southeast Gateway Line, a light-rail route expected around 2035, are part of driving in Paramount now (Metro). A closure without proper signs, a missing flagger or steel plates left uneven are choices someone made. The contractor that set up the zone answers for it, and where Metro or another public body shares the blame, the injured person’s government claim to that agency has a six-month deadline under Gov. Code §911.2.
Filing limits in a Paramount case
“I have two years, so there is no hurry”
| Deadline | Applies to |
|---|---|
| 6 months | Metro claims |
| 2 years | Private drivers |
| 3 years | Vehicle damage |
Two years is the statute of limitations that CCP §335.1 sets for suing a private motorist, and in a typical Paramount case it is the longest clock, not the only one. A Sheriff’s patrol car, a county truck or a work-zone claim against Metro brings the six-month claim rule into play, and storefront video along the boulevard is gone long before either date.
“Any lawsuit will be tried downtown”
Downtown is not the default. A 2024 general order has the Superior Court generally place a fresh complaint in whichever of its districts includes the spot where the vehicles collided (LASC). The courthouse for a southeast county crash therefore depends on its exact address, which a Los Angeles County personal injury attorney enters in the court’s district locator before preparing the complaint.
Hospitals near the city
There is no trauma center inside Paramount. The state’s trauma list puts two Level II hospitals within a short ambulance ride (EMSA):
- St. Francis in Lynwood, the neighboring city to the west
- MemorialCare Long Beach, designated for adults and children, across the southern border
Patients taken to Lynwood and later followed by a doctor in Long Beach end up with records in two systems. We obtain both, from the triage note forward.
Our Paramount clients and cases
We represent Paramount residents, drivers on the 105 and 710, and families hurt on Paramount Boulevard and the neighborhood streets off it. We handle each Paramount matter by starting with the Sheriff’s Lakewood Station report and the St. Francis or MemorialCare chart, and then sending preservation letters to every business whose camera covered the crash.
The data shape what comes first in our Paramount work: hit-and-run claims under uninsured motorist coverage, nighttime and drunk-driving collisions, and motorcycle crashes. Alongside those, we represent Paramount clients hurt in car and auto accidents, container-truck collisions near the 710, pedestrian and bicycle crashes and work-zone wrecks, shoppers injured in store falls, and families bringing wrongful death claims.
We are as willing to talk in your living room, or at a hospital in Lynwood or Long Beach, as in an office, and that first talk is a free consultation. Our fee is a share of what the insurers ultimately pay on your claim. You pay nothing unless we win. The phone line is (888) 952-2952. Written details can go through the evaluation form on our website, and Spanish readers will find our pages in Spanish.
