Palmdale Personal Injury Attorney
Los Angeles County
Sheriff’s deputies working Palmdale’s streets investigated crashes that killed or injured 955 people in 2023, enough to place the Antelope Valley city 20th of 62 in its population bracket on the Office of Traffic Safety’s list (OTS 2023). Those rankings stop at the on-ramps: anything the Highway Patrol investigates on the Antelope Valley Freeway or the state-owned stretches of Pearblossom Highway is tallied elsewhere.
If you were hurt here and are looking for a Palmdale personal injury attorney, or simply want to know what comes next, this page follows the first three days in order and then the weeks after. Each step names the agency, hospital or court that applies in the Antelope Valley.
| When | What to do | Who is involved here |
|---|---|---|
| Hour 0 | Call 911, get to safety, photograph the scene | Sheriff's Palmdale Station or CHP Antelope Valley Area |
| Hours 1–12 | Get examined, even for mild pain | Antelope Valley Medical Center or Palmdale Regional Medical Center |
| Day 2 | Get the report number and request the report | Sheriff's Traffic Department or the CHP office on West Avenue I |
| Day 3 | Report the claim to your carrier; get advice before any recorded interview | Your carrier and the at-fault driver's carrier |
| Week 1 | Collect video, receipts and medical records | Nearby businesses, AVTA, your doctors |
| Month 1 | Calendar the filing deadlines | City of Palmdale, AVTA or Caltrans if public roads or vehicles were involved |
Who answers the call
Palmdale has no city police department. The city pays the county for police services, and the deputies who answer a crash call work out of a Sheriff’s station whose territory, about 1,300 square miles, is the largest of any in the department (LASD). If you were hit on Rancho Vista Boulevard, 20th Street East or Avenue S, expect the report to carry the Sheriff’s letterhead.
Freeway crashes go to the Highway Patrol’s Area 545, which covers roughly 30 miles of SR-14 between Acton and the Kern County line, plus SR-138, SR-18 and the mountain climb up the Angeles Forest Highway (CHP Area 545). A collision on the freeway or a state stretch of Pearblossom Highway usually produces a CHP report, not a Sheriff’s report.
Hour zero on the roadside
- Dial 911. Out on Pearblossom Highway or the Angeles Forest Highway, where cross streets are far apart, read the dispatcher a mile marker or call box number.
- In 2023 drivers fled from 59 Palmdale crashes in which someone was killed or hurt (OTS 2023), so if the other car leaves, jot down its direction, color, make and any plate letters before the details blur.
- Before the tow trucks arrive, take wide photos that show the signal heads, the striping and both cars where they came to rest.
- Passing motorists who pull onto a desert shoulder to help seldom stay until a deputy arrives, so collect their names and numbers in the first few minutes.
- Let the paramedics check you over. Telling a deputy you feel fine is the kind of remark that gets quoted back to you by an adjuster.
Watch out: The risk climbs late at night. Between 9 p.m. and 2:59 a.m., Palmdale logged 79 crashes with a death or injury in 2023, 26th of 62 cities (OTS 2023). A crash after dark leaves fewer bystanders and less usable camera footage, so the photos on your phone and the timestamp of your 911 call become central evidence.
Hours one to twelve at the hospital
Ambulances carrying the most badly hurt Palmdale patients usually head north, because the hospital in Lancaster describes its program as the one trauma center within 50 miles, with more than 1,200 trauma patients a year (AVMC). For other injuries, Palmdale Regional Medical Center on Medical Center Drive, opened in December 2010 to replace Lancaster Community Hospital, is the emergency room inside city limits (LA County DHS).
Tell the emergency physician about every place that hurts, including your neck, back and head. Whiplash and concussion symptoms frequently surface a day or two later, and the other driver’s insurer will look for any gap between the collision and your first complaint. Keep the discharge papers. They are the first page of the medical record your claim will rest on.
Days two and three
The collision report
Sheriff’s collision reports come through the Palmdale Station Traffic Department at (661) 272-2400 (LASD Nixle), while a Highway Patrol report means a call or trip to the Area 545 office up the freeway on West Avenue I (CHP Area 545).
On day two the written report is rarely finished, so the goal is narrower: have the report number and the badge number of whoever took it. Once complete, the report records the officer’s view of fault, the parties’ insurance information and any statements made at the scene. If it gets a detail wrong, such as which direction you were traveling, raising it early is far easier than disputing it after an insurer has relied on it.
Calls from insurance adjusters
By day three you know which hospital treated you and which agency has the report, and that is a sensible moment to give your own carrier notice, as your auto policy requires. When the adjuster for the other driver phones, confirming your name, vehicle and the date is enough; a recorded interview this early tends to freeze your account of the pain before any imaging is back.
In a Palmdale hit-and-run, money for medical bills and lost income usually comes from the uninsured motorist (UM) part of your own policy, and that carrier will ask for the report number to confirm the crash was reported to deputies or the CHP without delay.
Evidence to gather in week one
- Written requests asking stores and gas stations with cameras aimed at the intersection to save the footage now
- Your own dashcam clip, plus any clip a witness mentioned recording
- A weekly picture of your injuries as bruises fade and stitches come out
- The body shop estimate, with pictures of the car taken before it goes to a salvage yard
- Your supervisor’s note confirming the hours you missed, counting commute days lost
- Pharmacy receipts and a mileage log that includes any appointments down SR-14
- For an AVTA rider, the route (Routes 1, 3 and 7 among others stop at the Palmdale Transportation Center), direction and time (Palmdale Transportation Center)
SR-14 is the Antelope Valley’s freeway link toward Santa Clarita and Los Angeles (California High-Speed Rail Authority), and many people who live here work down the hill. If an injury keeps you off that commute, log the days and hours you miss; a written record of lost wages is easier to prove than a recollection months later.
Roads where Palmdale crashes keep happening
Pearblossom Highway
Pearblossom Highway, part of SR-138, has been called “blood alley” since a run of head-on collisions in the 1980s and 1990s. Segments have since been widened from two lanes to four, and signals and a barrier project have been added (SR-138). Serious crashes continue. In April 2024, two fatal crashes within hours of each other killed six people on SR-138 and Pearblossom Highway (Supervisor Barger). In January 2025, a 6-year-old girl died when a driver ran a red light at Pearblossom Highway and 25th Street East (Hoodline), and in August 2026 a fatal crash closed Pearblossom between 25th Street East and Sierra Highway (LASD Nixle).
Other locations in the record
Other locations that appear in Sheriff’s advisories and news reports:
- Pearblossom Highway at Barrel Springs Road. Two Mustangs that were racing could not stop for a red light, and one was split in half in the crash (FOX 11).
- Rancho Vista Boulevard near Dunbar Street. A driver was killed in January 2026 when a car traveling at a high rate of speed rear-ended a Scion (Hoodline).
- Avenue S at Westland Drive. A motorcyclist died after losing control in July 2026 (LASD Nixle).
- 20th Street East. In 2024 the city won a $5,382,164 federal Safe Streets and Roads for All grant for sidewalks, bike lanes, crosswalks, lighting and an intersection rebuild along a 1.92-mile corridor that serves Tamarisk Elementary, Sage Academy Middle School and Palmdale High, with more than 5,500 students (PublicCEO).
A grant or a news story does not prove that anyone was negligent in your collision. It can show that a public agency was aware of conditions on a road, which becomes relevant if the road’s design or lighting contributed to the crash.
How the 2023 numbers break down

| Hit-and-run crashes | 59 | 31 |
| Alcohol-involved victims | 67 | 38 |
| Motorcyclists killed or injured | 34 | 44 |
| Speed-related crashes | 83 | 46 |
| Pedestrians killed or injured | 33 | 48 |
| Bicyclists killed or injured | 14 | 59 |
Source: OTS 2023. The total rose from 929 in 2022 (OTS 2022). What stands out is that the total ranks higher than any single category. Palmdale’s injuries come from a large volume of ordinary collisions on city streets, not from one dominant type of crash.
Deadlines that start in the first month
Someone injured by another motorist on Rancho Vista Boulevard, Avenue S or 20th Street East generally has two years to sue that driver (CCP §335.1); a claim for the car itself has three, and a child’s deadline is calculated differently.
Claims against the City of Palmdale over a street or signal, against the Antelope Valley Transit Authority over a bus, or against Caltrans over SR-138 or SR-14 run on a much tighter schedule: the written government claim has to be presented within six months (Gov. Code §911.2).
If an insurer argues that you share the blame, for instance that a rider on Avenue S was going a few miles over the limit, the argument reduces your recovery by your percentage of fault rather than ending the claim (CACI 405).
Los Angeles County’s Superior Court decides where an injury case is heard by looking at where it happened, a rule set out in its May 2024 general order (LASC General Order). For a Palmdale crash that generally means the Michael D. Antonovich courthouse on 4th Street West in Lancaster, the North District courthouse, rather than a trip downtown (211LA).
How we handle injury cases from Palmdale
We represent Palmdale residents and Antelope Valley commuters injured on Pearblossom Highway, SR-14, Rancho Vista Boulevard and the city’s other arterials. On a new Palmdale case, the first records we request are the Palmdale Station or CHP Antelope Valley collision report, the 911 timeline and the emergency records from Antelope Valley Medical Center or Palmdale Regional.
Most of the cases we see from here are car accidents, including hit-and-run and drunk-driving collisions. We also handle motorcycle crashes, pedestrians and bicyclists struck on city streets, truck collisions on SR-138 and SR-14, injuries on AVTA buses and at the Metrolink station, rideshare crashes, slip-and-fall injuries and dog bites. Families who lost someone on SR-138 or a city street can bring a wrongful death claim through our office as well.
When the City, AVTA or Caltrans may share responsibility for a Palmdale crash, The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani (Call Jacob) prepares the six-month government claim alongside the claim against the driver, so neither deadline slips past while you are still in treatment.
Talking through a Palmdale car accident claim with one of our lawyers costs you nothing; dial (888) 952-2952, or put the Sheriff’s report number and a short account into the case evaluator. There is no fee unless we recover money for you, and a representative can come to your house or to your bedside at the hospital. For Antelope Valley families who read Spanish at home, the same information is at calljacob.com/es.
Questions Antelope Valley families ask
A deputy took my report, not a police officer. Is that normal in Palmdale?
Yes. Because the Sheriff’s Department provides police services under contract, a deputy is the person who documents a crash on a city street here, while the Highway Patrol documents crashes on SR-14 and the state segments of SR-138.
My crash was on Pearblossom Highway. Who is responsible for the road?
Pearblossom Highway is part of SR-138, so where it is a state highway, Caltrans owns it. A claim that the road’s design, lighting or signals contributed belongs in a separate government claim to Caltrans, presented within six months, while the case against the driver proceeds on its own.
I was hurt on an AVTA bus. Is that claim different?
The main difference is time. Passengers injured on an Antelope Valley Transit Authority bus are making a claim against a public agency, so the first written claim is due within six months of the injury.
The driver who hit me was street racing. Does that change my case?
Racing, like the Barrel Springs Road crash described above, often leads to criminal charges, and that prosecution runs on its own track. Its investigation can supply speed analysis and witness interviews for your claim, but your compensation case does not have to wait for a verdict.
Will my case be heard in downtown Los Angeles?
Usually not. The Superior Court assigns injury cases by where the crash happened, and Palmdale belongs to the court’s North District, whose courthouse sits in the Antelope Valley.
This account of SR-14 and SR-138 claims and the Antonovich courthouse is general information, not legal advice for your own Palmdale case.
