Maricopa Personal Injury Attorney

Kern County

Maricopa is a city of 1,018 people (Census 2025 estimate) built where two state highways meet. Route 166 arrives from the Cuyama and Carrizo country to the west, Route 33 runs 6.5 miles north to Taft, and the Midway-Sunset Oil Field, described as the third-largest in the United States, presses against the city on its north and east sides (Wikipedia). With the Temblor Range to the northwest and the San Emigdio Mountains to the southeast, Maricopa is a through-traffic town for both routes. For a Maricopa personal injury attorney, the defining fact is how little crash data exists here, which makes the evidence from your own collision, gathered in the first days, carry nearly the whole claim.

What the public record holds

  • Kern COG’s 2022 safety plan for Maricopa found just 3 reported collisions from 2015 to 2019, and no data whatsoever for 2015, 2016 or 2017 (Maricopa LRSP)
  • Of the three, two in 2018 damaged only property; one in 2019, at Hazelton and Ventura Streets, caused a visible injury
  • Among the 32 smallest cities OTS ranked for 2023, Maricopa’s row is blank of victims, and its estimated driving totals 1,230 miles a day (OTS 2023)
  • Under a plan approved in 2012, the Kern County Sheriff’s Office replaced the city police department

Where the plan looked

Through town, Route 166 carries the street name Klipstein. The plan flagged four places:

  • Hazelton Street, from the Route 166 and Poso Street corner to the southern city limit, the top-scoring segment
  • Hazelton and Ventura Streets, the top-scoring intersection and the site of the 2019 injury crash
  • Klipstein at Alameda Street, a high-collision intersection
  • Klipstein from Stanislaus to Elkhorn Street, a high-collision segment

Residents who commented on the plan singled out Route 166 and California Street. Their complaints were speeding, unsafe intersections and drivers rolling through stop signs.

Steps from the scene through week four

Tip: Summer afternoons in Maricopa routinely pass 100°F. If a crash leaves you stuck on the shoulder of 166 or 33, get out of the sun and get water and medical help first; the photographs can wait a few minutes.

WhenStepThe Maricopa reason
Before leaving the sceneGet a report number from the deputy or CHP officerWith no city police and little state data, that report is the anchor of the claim
Before leaving the scenePhotograph the vehicles, the stop sign or limit line, and the highway shoulderStop-sign violations were among residents’ concerns about California Street and Route 166

End of week oneTell your own insurer; send the other carrier’s adjuster to your lawyerA driver passing through on 166 or 33 may carry minimum limits, or none

Deputies, Highway Patrol and hospitals

Who takes the report on Klipstein or Route 33

The city approved ending its police department in 2012 in favor of a Kern County Sheriff’s contract (Officer.com), and the Sheriff’s Office is listed as the law-enforcement partner in the 2022 plan. Out on Route 33 toward Taft or Route 166 toward Cuyama, the California Highway Patrol generally takes highway collisions. At the scene, confirm whether a deputy or a CHP officer is writing it up, because each agency releases its own reports.

Kern Medical

Anyone seriously hurt leaves town for care. EMSA’s statewide roster names Kern Medical in Bakersfield as the county’s single adult Level II trauma center (EMSA), and the ambulance run sheet for that trip belongs in the claim file with the hospital chart and bills.

Taft-Maricopa Area Transit passengers

Passengers who ride Taft-Maricopa Area Transit, the bus line run by the City of Taft (Wikipedia), face the same six-month rule as any claim against a public body if the bus or its driver injures them.

Call Jacob on the west side of Kern County

We represent Maricopa families, oil-field employees and drivers passing through on Routes 166 and 33. When we handle a Maricopa crash, we request the Sheriff’s or CHP report, place the location against the Klipstein, Hazelton and California Street findings in the 2022 plan, and decide within weeks whether a State or city claim has to be presented.

Our cases from this corner of Kern County include car accident and highway collisions, crashes with oil-field and freight trucks, motorcycle wrecks on the open stretches of 166, pedestrians struck in town, Taft-Maricopa transit injuries, dog bites and wrongful death claims.

Distance is not a barrier: a representative of The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani will drive out to Maricopa or up to Bakersfield to meet you without charge, and the firm’s fee depends entirely on obtaining a recovery. Phone (888) 952-2952 to speak with a Maricopa car accident attorney. If you would rather type, the case evaluator works from any phone in town, and Spanish speakers can begin at calljacob.com/es.

Stop signs, State claims and Bakersfield

OTS shows Maricopa with no injuries. Will the insurer say my crash was minor?

It may try. The plan itself says no collision data existed for 2015 through 2017, so low totals may reflect gaps in reporting, and your Kern Medical records and photographs speak to your injuries directly.

A pickup rolled through the stop at Hazelton and Ventura and hit me. What proves it?

The point of impact, where each vehicle came to rest, a neighbor’s account and any doorbell video. That corner already had the plan’s top intersection score, which supports a closer look but does not by itself prove fault.

Klipstein Street is a State highway. Can the State be responsible?

It can be, where a defect in Klipstein’s design, signs or pavement helped cause the crash. Claims against the State move fast, though: the State must receive your written claim no more than six months after the crash on Klipstein (Government Code §911.2). A claim against the City of Maricopa over one of its own streets follows the same six-month rule.

Is there a courthouse in Maricopa or Taft?

The Kern court’s location list includes neither town, so west-side cases travel. Injury cases above $35,000 go to the Metropolitan Justice Building at 1215 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield (Kern Superior Court), and the usual window to sue a negligent driver is two years (CCP §335.1). If a Bakersfield jury decides you share some blame for a Hazelton crash, it trims your award by your percentage and leaves the rest (CACI 405).

Hazelton, Klipstein and Route 33 are described here from public records; none of this page is legal advice.
