Manteca Personal Injury Attorney

San Joaquin County

Twenty-eight motorcycle riders were killed or injured on Manteca’s streets in 2023, and no other California city in its population group of 103 had more (OTS 2023). The year before, the same count of 28 had placed the city 7th. When a Manteca personal injury attorney opens a new file, that pattern decides where the investigation starts. Below, one invented but realistic claim moves from the moment of impact to final resolution, and every stage is tied to the San Joaquin County agencies, hospitals and courthouse that a real case here passes through.

A commuter city on the Bypass

In fifteen years the town has added nearly thirty thousand people, rising from 67,096 in 2010 to 83,498 in 2020 and an estimated 96,693 by mid-2025 (Census). Much of that growth came from Bay Area households moving east for cheaper housing, with the SR-120 Bypass turning Manteca into a base for long daily drives to Bay Area jobs (Wikipedia: Manteca).

Older residents remember the Bypass differently. When it opened in 1980 as a two-lane “super two,” head-on wrecks were common enough to earn it the name “Blood Alley,” and only median barriers, followed by widening to four freeway lanes, ended that reputation (Wikipedia: SR-120). It now links I-5 and I-205 traffic to SR-99, with interchanges at Airport Way, Union Road, Main Street, McKinley Avenue and Yosemite Avenue, a short shared stretch with SR-99 on the east side, and a return to two lanes beyond SR-99 on the way to Escalon and Oakdale.

On November 25, 2020, Union Road became home to California’s first diverging diamond interchange. Between its two signals, traffic briefly runs on the left-hand side of the road, a crossover that keeps freeway-bound left turns from cutting across oncoming cars but that surprises drivers who have never used one.

Manteca’s 2023 numbers

OTS category for 2023Riders, walkers or victimsWhere Manteca placed
Motorcyclists killed or injured281
Child pedestrians under 15426
Child bicyclists under 15528
Hurt by drinking drivers aged 21 to 341349
Alcohol-involved victims2762
Pedestrians of every age1765
Total victims22178

From the state’s Manteca ranking page, where 1 marks the most victims; Bypass and SR-99 collisions worked by the Highway Patrol fall outside these local tallies.

Taken as a whole, the city sits toward the safer end of the list, at 78th. Motorcycles break that pattern sharply, and children walking or riding bikes are the next weakest spot. Drinking-related harm moved the other way: 41 alcohol-involved victims and a rank of 22nd in 2022 dropped to 27 victims and 62nd a year later.

Following one claim from crash to resolution

Hypothetical example. A Manteca welder rides his motorcycle home from a shift in Tracy on a weekday evening. He leaves SR-120 at Union Road, and a driver confused by the diverging diamond turns across his lane. Thrown over the handlebars onto the crossover pavement, he fractures his right wrist and his collarbone. These facts are invented for illustration, but each stage that follows mirrors how a claim like his proceeds.

At the Union Road interchange

A collision on freeway ramps and interchange lanes is ordinarily a Highway Patrol investigation, whereas the same crash a half mile away on Yosemite Avenue or Main Street would be written up by Manteca police. Someone at the scene should photograph the crossover lane markings, the overhead signs and the final resting places of the bike and car, because at an interchange this unusual the paint and signage show what each driver was meant to do.

At San Joaquin General

An ambulance takes our welder to San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp, between Stockton and Manteca, which the state lists as the county’s Level II trauma center (EMSA). People with less severe injuries frequently go to Doctors Hospital of Manteca or Kaiser Permanente Manteca, two of the city’s biggest employers (Wikipedia: Manteca). Our welder’s X-rays and the orthopedic consult from French Camp become the medical core of his claim.

The adjuster’s first call

Three days later the turning driver’s carrier phones him at home, asking to record his account of how fast he was going and which lane he was in. Those are the questions insurers ask riders because the answers can be used to shift blame. He says his lawyer will call back, then notifies his own motorcycle insurer of the crash, which his policy obliges him to do.

Surgery, time off and records

A plate goes into the wrist, and he spends eight weeks off the job. In that time his lawyer gathers the CHP report, the French Camp and follow-up orthopedic charts, every bill, a payroll letter from the Tracy employer and the salvage value of the bike, while he writes a few nightly lines about pain and what he can no longer lift. Riders weighing whether to call a Manteca motorcycle accident attorney can see how those arguments are answered on our motorcycle accident page.

Whether Caltrans shares responsibility

If confusing signs or crossover design at Union Road helped cause the crash, Caltrans, as the agency that runs the state highway, could share blame. A claim naming Caltrans, the City of Manteca or Manteca Transit has to be delivered in writing within six months of the injury (Government Code section 911.2), a far shorter window than the one for suing the driver.

The demand package

With his wrist healed as far as it will, the lawyer sends the insurer a demand covering past and future medical care, the eight weeks of welding pay, any lasting grip loss and his pain and suffering. The insurer replies that he was speeding through the crossover. If a jury agreed he was partly to blame for the Union Road collision, California would cut his damages by his percentage share and leave the rest owing from the driver (CACI 405).

A lawsuit in Stockton

If the carrier’s offer never covers the surgery and lost welding pay, his complaint has to be filed within two years of the evening he went down (CCP §335.1). For a crash at Union Road or anywhere else in Manteca, that complaint generally goes to the county’s Stockton Courthouse on East Weber Avenue, where civil matters are heard (San Joaquin Superior Court). Filing often moves an insurer, and most such cases settle before a jury is seated.

Settlement and liens

When his case resolves, his health plan and any treating providers holding liens are repaid out of the settlement before the remainder goes to him. Had the injured rider been a teenager, a Stockton judge would also have reviewed and approved the settlement terms.

Other risks in Manteca

  • Children on foot and bikes. Five young cyclists and four young pedestrians hurt in 2023 gave the city its worst rankings after motorcycles, and a parent or guardian pursues the claim on a child’s behalf under deadlines that differ from an adult’s.
  • Memorial Day crowds. The annual Not Forgotten Memorial Day gathering, billed as the West Coast’s largest veterans’ commemoration, brings more than 20,000 visitors into town (Wikipedia: Manteca).
  • Rail and transit. I-5, SR-99, SR-120 and the Union Pacific main line all meet here; ACE trains serve the Lathrop/Manteca station, and a planned extension toward Ceres would add a stop at the Manteca Transit Center.
  • Freight at the SR-99 merge. Commuter cars and freight trucks share lanes where Route 120 joins SR-99, and a Manteca truck accident lawyer will demand the driver logs and inspection records a carrier must keep, as our truck accident page explains.

Tip: A passenger hurt in a friend’s car after a Memorial Day event or a day at the Great Wolf resort usually claims first against the driver’s liability policy, then looks to their own policy for medical payments or underinsured coverage. Ask both drivers for their declarations pages early.

Questions about motorcycle and Bypass claims

Why does Manteca rank first for motorcycle injuries?

The OTS table reports how many riders were hurt relative to peer cities, 28 in 2023, but it does not say why. That is why each crash at Union Road, on Yosemite or anywhere else in town is reconstructed from its own photographs, damage and witnesses.

Who investigates a crash on the 120 Bypass?

Highway Patrol officers handle the Bypass, its ramps and SR-99, while Manteca police take collisions on surface streets inside city limits, and an auto accident attorney in Manteca requests whichever report applies.

Can the Union Road crossover design be part of my claim?

It can be, if confusing signs or lane layout helped cause the crash, but a claim against Caltrans must reach the state within six months.

Will I have to drive to Stockton for court?

Only if a lawsuit is filed and the case reaches a hearing that requires you; civil matters for the county are heard on East Weber Avenue, and we attend most proceedings without you.

A driver struck my son while he was cycling home. What comes first?

Have a doctor examine him that day, call Manteca police so a report exists, and save his helmet, bike and clothing. You would act for him as parent, and any settlement offered for a boy hurt near a Manteca campus goes before a judge for approval.

How Call Jacob represents injured people in Manteca

The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani (Call Jacob) represents riders, commuters and families hurt on the SR-120 Bypass, SR-99, Yosemite Avenue, Union Road and Manteca’s neighborhood streets, along with neighbors in Lathrop, Ripon and French Camp. With Manteca leading its group for motorcyclist injuries, we move quickly on rider cases: we order the Highway Patrol or Manteca police report, photograph interchange markings before restriping, and ask nearby businesses to hold their video.

Beyond motorcycles, our Manteca practice covers car and auto accident claims from the Bypass, big-rig collisions at the SR-99 merge, children struck on foot or on bikes near school, Uber and Lyft rideshare accidents, slip-and-fall injuries in retail centers, dog bites and wrongful death claims. Rather than ask an injured rider to drive anywhere, our Manteca car accident lawyer visits clients in Lathrop, Ripon and town, or at San Joaquin General.

For anyone looking for an injury lawyer in Manteca, there is no charge to talk through a Bypass or Union Road crash with us, and Call Jacob collects a fee only from compensation we win. Phone (888) 952-2952, or tell us what happened on the Bypass or in town through our online case evaluator.

The Union Road welder is a hypothetical; the surrounding facts come from public records and are offered as general information, not legal advice.
