Livermore Personal Injury Attorney

Alameda County

Injury collisions in Livermore climbed from 122 in 2020 to 195 in 2024, a rise of about 60% in five years, according to the city’s preliminary Vision Zero analysis (Livermore Vine). Fifty-seven of those five years’ crashes left someone dead or with a severe injury. A Livermore personal injury attorney looks first at who was hurt and where, because a pedestrian on First Street, a Sandia engineer on Vasco Road and a wine-country visitor on the Altamont each face a different set of agencies, insurers and deadlines.

Who is being hurt

Livermore’s safety work so far: a Local Road Safety Plan adopted in December 2023; a Vision Zero Action Plan started in September 2025 with a $560,000 federal Safe Streets and Roads for All grant; 13 high-injury corridors, five of them named publicly; and, per Livermore police, five deaths in four collisions during 2025.

Walkers and cyclists

More than a third of Livermore’s deaths and severe injuries on the road from 2020 through 2024 were people on foot or on a bicycle (Livermore Vine). The Office of Traffic Safety’s 2023 tables tell a quieter story, with 20 pedestrians and 16 cyclists in its count and middling ranks of 57th and 69th among 103 Group C cities (OTS 2023). The gap is about severity rather than frequency: relatively few walkers and riders are struck, but when one is, the outcome is disproportionately grave.

Drivers who hit someone at a Livermore crosswalk commonly insist the walker darted out. A Livermore pedestrian accident lawyer answers that with signal-phase records, the sight lines at the corner and statements from people waiting at the light, as our pedestrian accident and bicycle accident pages describe.

Children walking to school

OTS recorded three pedestrians younger than 15 hurt in Livermore in 2023, a 33rd-of-103 ranking and the city’s poorest showing across every OTS category. If your child was one of them, the case is brought in the child’s name by a parent serving as guardian ad litem; a judge reviews any settlement, and the minor’s filing deadline is calculated differently.

Drivers at intersections

Three in four of the city’s deaths and severe injuries happened where streets meet, and speeding and impaired driving led the causes. The five corridors named so far:

  • Vasco Road from Scenic Avenue to West Gate Drive
  • First Street from I-580 to P Street
  • Airway Boulevard from Sutter Street to Kitty Hawk Road, near the airport
  • East Avenue from North Mines Road to South Vasco Road
  • Jack London Boulevard from Discovery Drive to Murrieta Boulevard

Being on the high-injury list is not, by itself, proof of City liability; what it does establish is that City engineers identified a pattern on that street, which matters if a short yellow, an awkward turn pocket or a dark stretch contributed. An auto accident lawyer in Livermore handles the insurer side of those claims, which our car accident page describes.

Lab commuters on Vasco Road

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory employs 9,749 people and is the city’s largest employer; Sandia’s California site adds 2,067 (Wikipedia). That workforce concentrates commute traffic in east Livermore, and Vasco Road, which continues north toward Brentwood and the Delta, is among the corridors the city marked for immediate remediation.

A lab scientist rear-ended on the drive in is, legally, an ordinary commuter: the coming-and-going rule usually keeps that crash out of workers’ compensation, so the claim runs against the at-fault motorist. A lab employee hit while driving between sites on the job may have both a comp claim and an injury claim, and the two must be coordinated.

Motorcyclists

Riders are one group Livermore treats comparatively well. Twelve riders appear in the 2023 count, a 70th-of-103 ranking that puts Livermore among the safer cities for motorcyclists.

Freeway crashes on I-580 and the Altamont

Interstate 580 runs along the north side of town and climbs east over the Altamont Pass toward the Central Valley; State Route 84 heads southwest to Fremont. Because the BART board voted against extending service to Livermore in 2018, commuters rely on the freeway or on ACE trains (Wikipedia).

Collisions in the freeway lanes belong to the California Highway Patrol, not Livermore police, and the OTS city figures above exclude them. If a big rig was involved on the Altamont grade, the trucking company and its insurer join the driver as potential defendants, and a Livermore truck accident lawyer will move quickly to secure the carrier’s logs.

Tasting rooms, the rodeo and drunk drivers

Wine has been made in the Livermore Valley since the 1840s, and estates such as Wente and Concannon draw visitors to the south side of the city; the Livermore Rodeo has run every year since 1918 (Wikipedia). Alcohol was a factor for 35 of the people killed or hurt on Livermore streets in 2023, a 51st-of-103 showing amid the tasting-room traffic. The department’s DUI arrest total that year was 194 (OTS 2023).

Watch out: It is natural to ask whether the tasting room that poured the wine shares the blame. Under Civil Code §1714, serving an adult is generally not treated as the legal cause of a later crash, which leaves the impaired driver’s liability policy and your own UIM limits as the realistic sources of recovery.

ACE trains and WHEELS buses

ACE stops at Vasco Road and in downtown Livermore, and LAVTA’s WHEELS buses link the city with Pleasanton, Dublin and the Dublin/Pleasanton BART station (Wikipedia). Each is run by a public agency. A rider hurt on a WHEELS bus or at an ACE platform, or a driver struck by a public vehicle, must present a government claim to that agency within six months (Government Code §911.2), the same rule that governs a claim over a defective City of Livermore street.

Livermore filing deadlines

Time limitApplies to
6 monthsGovernment claim to the City, LAVTA, ACE or Caltrans (§911.2)
2 yearsSuits against drivers (CCP §335.1)
3 yearsCar repairs

Each clock generally starts on the day of the crash; minors get different timing. If a jury assigns you a share of fault, say for crossing East Avenue outside the crosswalk, the award is cut by that percentage and not erased (CACI 405). Should a Livermore case need a lawsuit, it goes to Alameda County Superior Court, and we confirm which of its courthouses takes it when we file.

Livermore questions

Are Livermore’s roads becoming more dangerous?

By the city’s count, yes: 122 injury collisions in 2020 grew to 195 in 2024. The state’s 2023 snapshot remains moderate, with 280 victims and a 66th-of-103 ranking.

I was rear-ended on Vasco Road driving to the lab. Is this workers’ comp?

Probably not. Driving to and from a regular workplace is generally excluded from workers’ compensation, so the claim is against whoever rear-ended you.

Can I sue the winery that served the driver?

Generally no; the impaired driver’s policy and your own UIM coverage are where the money usually comes from.

Our child was hit near a school crossing. What first?

See a doctor, keep the incident number and photograph the crossing and its signage, then speak with a lawyer before the driver’s insurer calls you.
