Lawndale Personal Injury Attorney

Los Angeles County

Lawndale is home to an estimated 29,892 people (Census) in about two square miles, yet 141 people were killed or injured on its streets in 2023. That count put the city 22nd of 93 in its OTS size class, and its 14 bicycle riders hurt or killed placed it 16th (OTS 2023). Ask a Lawndale personal injury attorney where these crashes happen and the answer is mostly four roads: Hawthorne Boulevard, Marine Avenue, Artesia Boulevard and the I-405.

Each of those roads carries its own mix of drivers, riders and bus passengers, and each leaves a different trail of evidence after a collision. Here is how we sort them out, beginning with a one-table overview.

Street or freewayCharacterUsual reporting agencyProof to secure in week one
Hawthorne BoulevardState Route 107 and the city’s main commercial streetSheriff’s deputies under the city’s contractStorefront and parking-lot video, bus-stop witnesses
Marine AvenueStreet through residential blocksSheriff’s deputiesHome doorbell cameras, neighbors and passing drivers
Artesia BoulevardState Route 91, which becomes a freeway farther eastSheriff’s deputies on city streetsSignal timing records, business video
Interstate 405San Diego Freeway, which also serves LawndaleCalifornia Highway PatrolThe CHP’s own report and any Caltrans camera footage

Road descriptions follow the city’s Wikipedia entry. Policing in the city that calls itself the Heart of the South Bay is done by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies under a city contract, not by a municipal force.

Hawthorne Boulevard

Wikipedia calls Hawthorne Boulevard a major South Bay thoroughfare, and in Lawndale it is also the commercial center, the street the city rebuilt in its 2003 “Beautify Lawndale” project (Wikipedia). It is designated State Route 107. That matters for one kind of claim: if a road condition, rather than another driver, caused your crash, the first question is which public agency owns and maintains the stretch where it happened, the city or the State, because a written government claim must reach that owner within six months (Gov. Code §911.2).

Most claims from a busy commercial street turn on the drivers, not the road: turning cars, vehicles leaving parking lots, and people crossing between bus stops and shops. For a collision there, the order of steps looks like this:

  1. Call 911 and ask for medical help, then stay until Sheriff’s deputies take your information.
  2. Photograph the lanes, the signal, the driveway or parking-lot exit involved, and the cars where they stopped.
  3. Look up and down the block for cameras on storefronts and parking lots, and note the business names.
  4. Riders waiting for the Metro 40 or 740 may have watched the intersection; ask them what they saw and save their numbers.
  5. Keep whatever paperwork the deputies hand over; the report is requested later by the number on it.

Watch out: Ask Hawthorne Boulevard shop owners for their video in a dated letter that same week; some systems keep only a few days.

When Lawndale callers reach us

Lawndale doesn’t have police. Who came to my crash?

Sheriff’s deputies. The city pays the County to provide its policing, so deputies answer calls and write reports on Hawthorne, Marine, Artesia and the side streets, while the Highway Patrol takes freeway collisions.

Are evening collisions common in this city?

The city had 12 injury crashes between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. in 2023, which placed it 23rd of 93 (OTS 2023). Night crashes raise questions about lighting and visibility, so photograph the scene at the same hour if you can.

Who pays when a hit-and-run driver strikes a cyclist?

Drivers fled from 11 of the city’s injury collisions that year. Even a cyclist with no car of their own may be covered by a household member’s uninsured motorist benefits, and that claim goes more smoothly when deputies were called the same day.

Does the Lawndale Beat shuttle change the rules?

It can. The city runs its own Lawndale Beat shuttle, which seniors ride free, and Lawndale is also served by Gardena’s Line 1 and Metro routes 40, 211 and 740 (Wikipedia). If the shuttle, a Gardena bus or a Metro coach was involved, the agency behind it is a public entity, and its written claim deadline is six months, not two years.

Tip: Note the Metro or Gardena line and the stop nearest the collision. Buses often carry onboard cameras, and transit agencies do not keep that video forever.

DUI crashes are rare here. Will an insurer use that?

It should not matter. Yes, just 3 people were hurt in alcohol-involved crashes in the city in 2023 (83rd of 93), and speed crashes ranked 76th, but a citywide average says nothing about the driver who struck you, whose own conduct is what a claim examines.

Marine Avenue and the residential grid

Marine Avenue runs through the city’s neighborhoods. At about 7:30 one morning, a two-car collision at Marine and Mansel Avenue killed one person and closed the intersection, according to a CBS Los Angeles report updated in August 2025 (CBS Los Angeles). The report noted that the Sheriff’s Department handled the investigation.

Lawndale sits about 5.7 miles from LAX and borders Hawthorne, Redondo Beach and Torrance. Residential streets offer a kind of evidence the boulevards do not: doorbell and driveway cameras. In a city where 66.6% of homes are renter-occupied (Wikipedia), that sometimes means asking landlords and building managers, not just homeowners, to save recordings. Two sources are worth checking on any Lawndale block:

  • doorbell and driveway cameras on the houses facing the street
  • apartment-building systems run by a property manager

Of every OTS category for 2023, the city’s worst placement came for people on bikes: 14 riders, ranked 16th. Drivers’ insurers often claim a cyclist on a neighborhood street was hard to see or riding too fast; our bicycle accident page describes how lighting, sight lines and phone data answer those points.

Artesia Boulevard and the I-405

Artesia Boulevard, State Route 91, crosses the city and becomes a freeway farther east. The I-405 also serves Lawndale (Wikipedia). The difference between them is practical: a crash on Artesia within city limits is usually reported by Sheriff’s deputies, while a crash on the freeway or its connecting lanes is handled by the California Highway Patrol. The report has to be ordered from the agency that showed up.

Tip: The card or printout the officer gave you names the agency. A card from the Sheriff’s Department means the Sheriff has the report; one reading California Highway Patrol means the CHP does.

If a delivery van or tractor-trailer was involved, the claim may include an employer and its insurer, and the company’s driver logs and vehicle data become evidence that should be preserved quickly. More on hours-of-service logs and fleet insurers is on our truck accident page.

Deadlines, Torrance and the court locator

The Artesia or Hawthorne Boulevard motorist can generally be sued until the second anniversary of the crash (CCP 335.1). If a jury decided a rider on Mansel Avenue carried a quarter of the blame, the award would shrink by that quarter, not vanish (CACI 405).

Unsettled claims are filed in Los Angeles Superior Court; a 2024 general order generally ties the courthouse to the crash location (LASC General Order). A countywide services directory, 211 LA, lists the Torrance Courthouse at 825 Maple Avenue as serving Lawndale (211 LA). That is a third-party listing, not a court ruling, so every Lawndale address gets checked against the court’s own locator first.

Tip: On Hawthorne or Artesia, both state routes, settle the question of road ownership early. The six-month claim must go to whichever agency, the city or the State, maintains the exact spot.

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a Level I center on the state’s designation list, is one South Bay hospital where seriously injured people may be taken (EMSA). Whichever hospital paramedics chose, its emergency and imaging records become the backbone of a serious Lawndale claim.

What Call Jacob brings to a Lawndale claim

The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani (Call Jacob) represents tenants and homeowners across Lawndale’s grid, employees of the Hawthorne Boulevard storefronts, and commuters struck on Artesia on their way somewhere else. When we handle a crash from Hawthorne Boulevard or Marine Avenue, we request the Sheriff’s Department or CHP report, contact businesses and landlords for video, and determine early whether the city, the State or a transit agency must receive a six-month claim.

Because the city’s data is led by bicycle injuries and a high total for its size, we handle many cyclist and car accident claims here. Pedestrians struck near bus stops, motorcycle riders, Metro and rideshare passengers, people hurt by delivery trucks, shoppers who fell in a Hawthorne Boulevard store, dog bite victims and families facing a wrongful death are part of that practice too. Anyone laid up after surgery can ask a Lawndale car accident lawyer from our firm to visit instead of traveling.

A free consultation starts with a call to (888) 952-2952; there is no commitment, and on a case we take, you pay nothing unless we win. Some clients prefer to write first through the case evaluator; familias que hablan español pueden visitar calljacob.com/es.
