La Verne Personal Injury Attorney

Los Angeles County

La Verne has studied its own crashes closely. The city’s Local Roadway Safety Plan, revised in June 2023, counted more than 870 collisions reported to La Verne police from 2017 through 2021 and found that unsafe speed was the leading cause (La Verne LRSP). If you or someone in your family was hurt on Arrow Highway, Bonita Avenue or Foothill Boulevard, this page answers the questions people most often ask a La Verne personal injury attorney, using the city’s data rather than general statements.

At a glance — La Verne

  • About 30,178 residents (2025 estimate)
  • Its own police and fire departments
  • Speeding led every other factor in the city’s 2016–2020 collision records
  • Older walkers: 9th-worst ranking among 93 comparable cities in 2023

Jump to a question:

Which intersections does the city worry about?

The safety plan’s emphasis table places Arrow Highway at North White Avenue at the top, citing insufficient pedestrian infrastructure, and proposes countdown signal heads, a leading pedestrian interval and a pedestrian refuge there. Bonita Avenue appears several times, at White Avenue, E Street, D Street and other crossings, and the plan flags Bonita at White for broadside collisions.

Intersection or corridorDeficiency noted by the city
Arrow Hwy & N. White AveRanked first; pedestrian facilities fall short
Bonita Ave & N. White AveBroadside collisions
Bonita Ave at E St, D St and othersRepeated listings along the corridor
Foothill Blvd & Baseline RdBicycle and pedestrian facilities fall short; bike lanes to be extended
E. Gladstone St & Ramona AveFixes require coordination with San Dimas

Interstate 210 divides the city from east to west, and walkers and cyclists cross it on bridges at Bixby Drive and Chelsea Drive. North of Baseline Road the land climbs into the San Gabriel foothills on curving streets, while the neighborhoods to the south are flat.

A listing in that emphasis table is evidence that city engineers knew about the hazard before your crash. That does not prove the city is responsible for a particular collision, but it shapes whether a claim against the City of La Verne should be considered alongside a claim against the other driver.

Why does speed come up so often?

Because the data keeps pointing to it. Of the 408 crashes in the state’s records for La Verne from 2016 to 2020, unsafe speed was the primary factor in 31%, followed by automobile right-of-way violations at 18% and improper turning at 14% (La Verne LRSP). About 6% of those crashes were fatal or severe.

Collision type in police dataShare
Broadsideabout 23%
Rear-endabout 23%
Hit objectabout 23%
Sideswipe16%

About 40% of all reported collisions happened between 11 in the morning and 5 in the afternoon. Midday traffic, not late-night driving, dominates the La Verne pattern; the 2023 state rankings show 5 injury crashes between 9 at night and 3 in the morning and 6 alcohol-involved victims, both well below the middle of the city’s peer group (OTS 2023).

Speed is often hard to prove after the fact. A driver who hit you at 45 in a 35 zone will rarely say so. We look for the physical and electronic evidence: skid and yaw marks, crush depth, the vehicle’s event data recorder, and video from businesses along Foothill or Arrow.

Tip: If your car was totaled, ask your insurer not to release it to salvage until your lawyer has had a chance to download the event data recorder. Once the car is crushed, that data is gone.

Why do so many older walkers get hurt?

The 2023 numbers show the problem plainly. Four of the 12 pedestrians struck in La Verne in 2023 were 65 or older, a count that put La Verne 9th-worst for older walkers in a state peer group of 93 cities (OTS 2023). The city’s plan notes that about 20% of residents are over 65 and another 20% are under 18. With an estimated 30,178 people in 2025 (Census Bureau), that is roughly six thousand residents over 65 crossing the same arterials.

A hip fracture or a brain bleed from a bumper strike at Arrow and White can turn an independent 70-year-old into someone who needs months of rehabilitation and in-home care, and those costs belong in the claim.

Watch out: An adjuster may offer an older client a quick settlement before the full extent of a fracture or head injury is known. Rehabilitation, in-home help and a family member’s time caring for you are all part of the loss, and none of it can be added after a release is signed.

Insurers sometimes argue that a slow crossing or a missed signal shares the blame. California’s comparative fault rule means that argument can reduce compensation but does not erase it. Suppose a retiree crossing Bonita is assigned a fifth of the blame for starting after the countdown began; the driver’s share, four-fifths, is still owed (CACI 405). If a family member was struck near Arrow Highway, where the city itself found the crossings inadequate, our pedestrian accident page explains how these claims are built.

Who investigates the collision?

Collisions on Bonita, Foothill, Arrow and the residential streets are investigated by officers of the La Verne Police Department, which the city runs itself (city overview). Freeway collisions on the 210 are generally handled by the California Highway Patrol, and the state’s city rankings leave them out for that reason. Knowing which agency wrote the report tells us where to request it and how long it may take.

Who else responds: The La Verne Fire Department handles fire and paramedic calls in the city. Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center holds a Level II trauma designation from the state (EMSA), though the crew decides where each patient goes.

What happens once we are hired?

The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani (Call Jacob) represents people hurt in La Verne collisions, from Bonita Avenue broadsides to pedestrians struck at Arrow Highway crossings. On a La Verne file we request the police department’s collision report first, compare the location against the city’s safety plan, and send preservation letters to businesses whose cameras face the scene.

Speed-related car accidents on the corridors the plan lists come first. We also handle:

  • Injuries to people on foot and on bikes near the university and the new station
  • Motorcycle crashes on the curving foothill streets
  • Rideshare passenger claims and injuries aboard Foothill Transit routes 197 and 291
  • Injuries from unsafe property or a dog, and wrongful death claims after a fatal crash

We also represent University of La Verne students, Fairplex visitors and commuters using the new Metro station who were injured while in town.

If you are looking for a La Verne car accident attorney, or an injury lawyer near Old Town La Verne, the first conversation costs nothing. Someone from our office will meet you wherever is easiest, whether that is a kitchen table north of Baseline or a room at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, and our fee comes only from a recovery. What should I do this week?

A short list, written for the days right after a crash in town:

  • Copy the incident number from the card La Verne police handed you; a crash on the 210 will carry a Highway Patrol number instead.
  • Photograph the signals and crosswalk markings at the intersection, especially at Arrow and White or along Bonita.
  • Walk Old Town’s D Street storefronts or the Foothill shopping centers and ask managers to save video before it records over.
  • Start a folder for follow-up appointments, physical therapy notes and pharmacy receipts after the first hospital visit.
  • Politely refuse to be taped by the at-fault carrier until counsel has reviewed the La Verne report.
  • Write down whether the crash happened near the University of La Verne or during a Fairplex event, when traffic patterns change.

When does the claim window close?

Families are most often caught by the six-month rule, which applies if the design of an intersection the city has already listed as a priority, or a city vehicle or public bus, contributed to your injury. A high schooler under 18 who was hurt has a clock that starts later, but a parent’s own claim for medical bills may not wait.

Litigation, if it comes to that, takes place in Los Angeles Superior Court, which since its 2024 general order assigns injury lawsuits by geography: the branch serving the district where the La Verne collision happened is usually the one that hears it, and the court’s own locator tool points to that building (LASC General Order). We confirm the location for each La Verne file rather than assume it.

More from La Verne families

Has the new rail station made Arrow Highway busier on foot?

It adds foot traffic. The La Verne/Fairplex station opened on September 19, 2025, between the university and the Fairplex, and the city’s plan calls for a pedestrian bridge over Arrow Highway to serve it. Riders walking to and from the platform cross the same corridor the plan ranked first.

Tip: If you were struck walking to the station, note which side of Arrow Highway you were on and whether you were in a marked crosswalk. Metro, the city and the driver may each have a different role, and Metro is a public agency subject to the six-month claim rule.

Is a crash during the LA County Fair handled differently?

The claim itself follows the same rules, but the evidence can differ. A Metrolink stop at the Fairplex operates only during the fair, and event traffic, parking attendants and temporary signs may all be relevant.

Tip: If you were hurt in a fair parking lot rather than on a public street, write down the lot name or gate number. The lot’s operator, and not only a driver, may share responsibility.

Does a turn I misjudged on Foothill Boulevard ruin my claim?

No. If the adjuster says you made your left turn into the Foothill shopping center too early, the most that argument can do is trim your award by whatever percentage a jury assigns you.

What if the other car never stopped?

In five La Verne injury crashes during 2023, the person responsible drove away. Do both of these quickly:

  1. File a police report the same day, even if you only remember part of the plate.
  2. Notify your own insurer and look at the uninsured motorist section of your policy, which steps in when the runaway driver is never identified.

Are the hillside streets north of Baseline more dangerous?

The plan describes them as curving streets climbing into the foothills, but it does not single them out in its emphasis table. Whether a hillside crash involved a road defect depends on three things we check on site:

  • Sight distance around the curve where the crash happened
  • Warning signs and their condition
  • Pavement, drainage and shoulder width
