La Quinta Personal Injury Attorney
Riverside County
La Quinta has no police department, no hospital and no courthouse of its own, so a single collision on Washington Street can send you to offices in Thermal, Indio, Rancho Mirage and Palm Springs. Anyone hurt on Washington Street or Highway 111 who is weighing a call to a La Quinta personal injury attorney should first know which of those offices keeps the report, the chart and the court file. The table below sorts them out.
Tip: Keep every card, receipt and discharge sheet from the first week in one envelope; most of what this page describes starts with one of them.
Where to turn after a La Quinta crash
| What you need | Who has it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Report for a crash on a city street | Sheriff’s Thermal Station, La Quinta Traffic Team (Audacy) | Fault narrative and diagram |
| Report for an I-10 wreck at Washington or Jefferson | CHP Indio Area (CHP) | Ramp and lane positions |
| Emergency records | Eisenhower, JFK or Desert Regional (EMSA) | Proof of injury |
| SunBus driver or stop details | SunLine | Starts the clock on a government claim |
| Where a lawsuit goes | Palm Springs Courthouse (court order) | Set by ZIP code |
The Sheriff’s La Quinta Traffic Team
La Quinta contracts with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department for policing, and its patrol deputies work out of the Thermal Station, which also covers Coachella. That station fields a dedicated La Quinta Traffic Team, the unit that investigated the May 2024 triple fatality on Highway 111 described below (Audacy).
File the deputy’s business card, with its incident number, alongside your auto policy and repair estimate. A Traffic Team collision report generally contains:
- The investigating deputy’s opinion on which driver violated the Vehicle Code
- A diagram of where each car came to rest
- Statements the drivers gave before anyone had time to rethink them
Insurers lean on that opinion heavily, though it does not bind a jury.
Crashes on Interstate 10, including at the Washington Street and Jefferson Street interchanges that serve as the city’s freeway gateways (city overview), are generally the Highway Patrol’s to investigate. If you are unsure which agency came, the uniform patch and the color of the patrol car usually answer the question.
Highway 111 and Washington Street
In an April 2025 letter, Assemblymember Greg Wallis called the junction of Washington Street and Highway 111 the most heavily traveled intersection in the Coachella Valley (funding letters). News Channel 3 counted 11 collisions there in the first eight months of 2025 (KESQ I-Team).
Washington Street is also La Quinta’s main link to I-10 and a key SunLine bus route. The city sought $5 million in federal money for fiscal 2026 to repave about four miles of it, citing cracks and potholes (funding letters). Pavement that the city itself has described as cracked and potholed can matter when a motorcyclist goes down or a driver loses control, because a dangerous condition of public property can support a claim against the city.
Watch out: If Washington Street’s broken pavement or a flooded Cove intersection contributed to your crash, the written claim to the City of La Quinta is due within six months under Government Code §911.2. A strong pavement claim can be lost to that clock alone.
Highway 111 is the valley’s main surface road. At about 9:20 p.m. on May 14, 2024, an eastbound motorcycle struck a man crossing the highway at Simon Drive, and a westbound pickup then hit the fallen motorcycle while people were trying to help; three people died and one was seriously injured (Audacy). A chain collision like that one raises separate questions of fault for each driver, and each victim’s family may have claims against more than one insurer.
Three hospitals on the state’s trauma list
No hospital is located inside La Quinta. Nearby designated centers:
| Hospital | Level |
|---|---|
| Desert Regional | Level I |
| Eisenhower | Level IV |
| JFK Memorial | Level IV |
Desert Regional Medical Center is in Palm Springs, Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage and JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio. Of the three, only Desert Regional carries a Level I rating (EMSA). The paramedics’ run sheet, kept by the agency that transported you, records your complaints at the scene in their words; together with the hospital’s imaging reports it answers an adjuster who claims your pain started later.
Speed, visitors and a rising death count
Speed was the city’s poorest OTS category in 2023: officers counted 25 speed-related injury and fatal crashes, which put La Quinta 24th of 93 comparable cities on a scale where 1 is worst, far worse than its rankings for alcohol, pedestrians or motorcycles (OTS 2023). Other 2023 figures:
- 147 total casualties, 50th
- 13 nighttime crashes, 43rd
- 9 young drinking-driver victims, 39th
- 115 DUI arrests (reverse-ranked)
The OTS figures leave out I-10, which the Highway Patrol covers. La Quinta’s streets carry far more than local traffic: OTS puts daily vehicle miles at 658,890 for a city of about 39,000, a ratio that reflects resort guests, golfers and through traffic (OTS 2023). The local economy rests on hotels, resorts, golf courses and nearby casinos, among them the historic La Quinta Resort and the SilverRock course (city overview).
The Sheriff’s figures reported by KESQ point the wrong way: 2 traffic deaths in 2022, 3 in 2023, and 4 in just the first half of 2024 (KESQ). The Sheriff’s Department reported another death in July 2026, when a 73-year-old driver hit a palm tree at Madison Street and Andalusia (Ground News).
A visiting driver who caused your crash is still answerable here. If the driver was in a rental car or on a resort errand, more than one policy may apply, and a lawsuit against a driver who lives out of state can still be filed in Riverside County.
Flooding in the Cove
The Cove neighborhood sits against the Santa Rosa Mountains with limited access roads. During Tropical Storm Hilary in 2023, flooding at three intersections lasted up to two days in places and cut off more than 2,000 households (funding letters):
| Flood-prone intersection |
|---|
| Avenue 50 at Eisenhower Drive |
| Desert Club Drive at Calle Tampico |
| Avenida Bermudas at Calle Tampico |
A driver who drives around a closure barricade and into moving water can be held responsible for a crash it causes. If an intersection was flooded and nothing warned you, photograph the scene and the absence of signs, because those photographs may support a dangerous-condition claim against the city.
Our La Quinta cases
The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani (Call Jacob) represents residents of the Cove, the Village and Griffin Ranch, along with golfers, resort guests and commuters, who are hurt on La Quinta roads. On a La Quinta case we obtain the Traffic Team’s report from the Thermal Station, request the chart from Eisenhower, JFK Memorial or Desert Regional, and check whether the city had notice of a pavement or flooding problem before the six-month claim period runs.
We handle these La Quinta matters, among others:
- car accidents at Washington and 111
- pedestrian cases like the one at Simon Drive
- motorcycle accidents
- bicycle crashes
- injuries to SunLine passengers
- falls on hotel and shopping-center property (premises liability)
- wrongful death
If you were looking for a La Quinta car accident lawyer while recovering at a vacation rental, we can talk by phone or video.

If you were visiting, golfing or driving through
Does La Quinta have its own police?
No. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department serves as La Quinta’s police force under contract, and its Thermal Station handles La Quinta crashes through a dedicated traffic team.
I flew home after a golf trip here. Can my claim go on without me?
Usually, yes. Much of an injury claim is handled by phone, mail and video, though a deposition or trial could require travel.
A pothole on Washington Street threw me off my bike. Who do I file against?
Possibly the City of La Quinta, which is responsible for city streets. Before the six-month deadline:
- photograph the pothole with something for scale
- note the cross street
- send the city your claim
A lawyer can confirm which agency owns that stretch.
Is the courthouse in Indio or Palm Springs?
Palm Springs, if your case becomes a lawsuit. La Quinta’s ZIP codes (92247, 92248, 92253) appear on that building’s list in new filing rules effective August 1, 2026 (court order). Many cases settle before anyone sees a courtroom.
How much time do I have to file a lawsuit?
Two years is the usual limit (CCP §335.1), so a Highway 111 collision in March 2026 would generally need a lawsuit on file by March 2028, even if insurance talks are still going. Being partly to blame, say for missing a stop sign in the Cove, lowers your award by your percentage instead of ending the claim (CACI 405).
