La Mirada Personal Injury Attorney
Los Angeles County
By the state’s own measure, La Mirada is one of the lower-crash cities of its size in California. Its composite rank for 2023 was 78th of 93, which leaves just fifteen peer cities with a cleaner record (OTS). A low ranking still left 156 people killed or injured on its streets that year, and one category broke from the rest: crashes late at night. This briefing walks through La Mirada’s numbers and what a La Mirada personal injury attorney takes from them when building a claim.
Three La Mirada numbers from 2023
- 156 killed or hurt
- 16 late-night injury crashes, 40th of 93
- 22 crashes where speed was a factor
The 2023 figures
Census Bureau estimates had La Mirada at 45,952 people in mid-2025 (Census), the size range OTS uses to group it with 92 other cities.
| Measure | 2023 | Rank |
|---|---|---|
| Total victims | 156 | 53 |
| Speed crashes | 22 | 52 |
| Night crashes | 16 | 40 |
| Pedestrians | 8 | 67 |
| Alcohol victims | 7 | 78 |
| Hit-and-run crashes | 7 | 70 |
| Bicyclists | 6 | 70 |
| Motorcyclists | 5 | 66 |
Rank 1 is the worst of 93.
Where the city ranks worst
Seven of the eight rows rank 52nd or below. Only the late-night count breaks into the 40s.
Where it ranks best
One encouraging line: not a single pedestrian under 15 was hurt in a La Mirada crash in 2023 by the state’s count, a 92nd-place rank.
What readers ask about these figures
If La Mirada is a low-crash city, will an insurer take my claim less seriously?
No. The city’s ranking describes thousands of trips, not yours. The insurer has to look at what your own crash cost you: treatment, time off work and how the injury changed your days.
I was hit on Beach Boulevard. Why isn’t my crash in the city’s statistics?
Beach Boulevard is a state highway, and crashes the CHP investigates there are excluded from the OTS city rankings.
My daughter at Biola was hit crossing near campus. Can we bring a claim from out of state?
Yes. California law governs a crash on a La Mirada street no matter where the student’s family lives, and a lawyer here can handle most of the case while you are in another state.
A crash near the Orange County line involved a driver from La Habra. Does that matter?
Not for where your case is filed, which follows the crash location. It can matter for which agency responded, so confirm who wrote the report.
Late-night crashes stand out
At 16 crashes, the after-dark window (9 at night to 3 in the morning) ranked 40th of 93, the only La Mirada category in the worse half of the group (OTS). For a city whose other rankings run safer, that is the number an injured person should pay attention to.
Night crashes are harder to reconstruct. There are fewer witnesses, store cameras along Imperial Highway or Alondra Boulevard may be pointed at closed entrances, and drivers who have been drinking or are exhausted tend to give confident accounts of what they could not have seen. The evidence that holds up is usually physical: skid and yaw marks, the resting positions of the vehicles, the timing of the traffic signal and the data in each car’s event recorder.
For a crash after dark, these steps matter most:
- Return at the same hour within a few days and photograph the scene from each driver’s direction.
- Note which streetlights were out and which businesses were closed.
- Ask the Sheriff’s substation whether a deputy took photographs.
- Keep the clothing you wore; its color and reflectivity can become an issue.
The enforcement side of the ledger shows 31 DUI arrests in La Mirada for 2023. In the OTS arrest ranking, 1 marks the fewest arrests, so La Mirada’s 19th place means deputies made comparatively few. That reflects enforcement, not the number of impaired drivers on the road, and it says nothing either way about any particular crash.
What the city figures leave out
Two state roads touch La Mirada. Interstate 5 crosses the southwest corner of the city, and Beach Boulevard (SR-39) passes briefly through its east end (Wikipedia). Wrecks on those two roads are CHP work and sit outside the 156.
| Where it happened | Who responds |
|---|---|
| Imperial, Valley View and other city streets | Sheriff’s Norwalk Station, with a La Mirada substation by City Hall |
| I-5 or Beach Boulevard | CHP Santa Fe Springs Area (550) |
| Fire and rescue | County Fire Station 49, home of Battalion 21 |
The Sheriff and fire details come from the city’s Wikipedia entry, and the CHP office names La Mirada on its area page.
La Mirada also borders Orange County, with Fullerton, La Habra and Buena Park on the other side of the line, and freight rail operated by BNSF and Union Pacific runs through its southwest industrial area. A collision that begins in one county and ends in another, or one involving a truck serving the industrial area, can involve more than one reporting agency.
Speed on the arterials
Speed-related injury crashes numbered 22, the largest single crash type for La Mirada in 2023. The city’s main traffic routes are wide, long arterials: Imperial Highway, Alondra Boulevard and Rosecrans Avenue run east to west, and Valley View Avenue, La Mirada Boulevard and Santa Gertrudes Avenue run north to south (Wikipedia). La Mirada Boulevard is also County Route N8.
In a speed case, three records do most of the work:
- each car’s airbag module, which logs speed and braking
- the posted limit on that block
- signal-timing records for the intersection
If you were speeding too, the case survives; California’s comparative fault rule subtracts your share and leaves the rest (CACI 405).
Biola and the city’s other draws
Biola University
Biola University, on a 96-acre campus at 13800 Biola Avenue, enrolled about 5,555 students in 2022 and is the city’s largest employer (Wikipedia). Students walking, biking or driving near campus are part of the traffic mix that the figures above describe.
Theatre, pool and buses
The La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts and the Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center bring in visitors from well beyond the city. So do Metro bus lines, including Route 460 to downtown Los Angeles, along with Norwalk Transit and Montebello Bus Lines. Riders coming by train use the Buena Park or Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs Metrolink stops, the closest to the city (Wikipedia).
For a student from out of state, the claim is still governed by California law and filed where the crash happened. The student’s own auto or health insurance from home can still apply.
Using the data in your case
- Identify the reporting agency. A Sheriff’s report covers a crash on Imperial or Valley View; the CHP covers the 5 and Beach Boulevard.
- Know the hospitals. The state lists MemorialCare’s Long Beach hospital as a Level II trauma center, while Kindred Hospital La Mirada provides long-term acute care and is not designated for trauma (EMSA).
- Move fast on the night evidence. Letters to businesses on Imperial or Alondra should go out in the first week.
- Watch two deadlines. A lawsuit over an Imperial Highway collision must generally be filed within two years (CCP §335.1). A pothole on La Mirada Boulevard or a County truck changes the clock: the claim to the public agency is due within six months (Gov. Code §911.2).
- Court. Where a La Mirada lawsuit is filed is decided by the Superior Court’s district map, read against the crash address, not by where you live (LASC General Order).
Call Jacob’s work in La Mirada
The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani (Call Jacob) represents people hurt in La Mirada, from residents of Creek Park, Granada Heights and Foster Park to Biola students and visitors to the theatre. Our work on a La Mirada case starts with the agency question above: we request the Norwalk Station report for a crash on city streets or the Santa Fe Springs CHP report for one on the 5 or Beach Boulevard, and we go after night-time evidence before it is lost.
Beyond car accident and auto accident claims, we take truck cases from the industrial southwest corner, injuries to pedestrians and cyclists around Biola, motorcycle crashes, rideshare passenger claims, falls on badly kept property, dog bites and wrongful death. Our pedestrian accident page covers claims by people struck on foot, including students crossing near campus.
Free consultation: A conversation with our office about a La Mirada crash is free, and there is no fee unless the case is won. Phone us at (888) 952-2952 from La Mirada or from wherever you are recovering. Some people would rather write it down first; the case evaluator is there for that. For clients still in a hospital bed, or recovering at home in Foster Park or Creek Park, we arrange to meet where they are.
Figures here are citywide OTS and Census data, and the legal points are general; neither is legal advice about your La Mirada crash.
