State traffic-safety analysts recorded 80 injury or fatal crashes in Inglewood during those hours, the worst result among 62 comparable cities (OTS 2023). Why alcohol ranks so low

Inglewood’s worst rankings involve people outside a vehicle and drivers who speed or flee, while alcohol-involved crashes rank 58th. That does not mean drunk driving is rare. The Inglewood Police Department’s Traffic Unit still lists DUI among the leading causes of collisions, along with pedestrian-related crashes, right-of-way violations, speed and unsafe turns. The unit reports that it investigates more than 5,000 collisions a year on 185 miles of streets carrying over 200,000 vehicles a day (IPD Traffic Unit).

Hit-and-run crashes and who pays

Eighty-four injury crashes in a single year in which a driver fled is a serious problem for the people hurt in them. A driver who leaves the scene takes the identity of their insurer along, so the injured person’s own uninsured motorist (UM) coverage often ends up paying instead.

Under California’s UM statute, a driver who disappears counts as uninsured only if two conditions are met: the driver’s vehicle actually struck you or the car you were in, and someone reported the crash to the police or the CHP within 24 hours (Ins. Code §11580.2). If that report is not made, a valid claim can become a dispute over coverage.

Watch out: A pedestrian who does not own a car may still have UM protection through a household member’s auto policy. Ask every adult in your home for the declarations page of their policy before concluding there is nothing to claim.

Video is usually what identifies a driver who fled. Storefront cameras on Manchester Boulevard, Century Boulevard or Prairie Avenue may have recorded a license plate, but private systems often record over their footage within days, so the first week determines whether that evidence survives.

That depends on who struck you and where. If the driver stayed or was identified from stadium-area video, a claim goes first to that driver’s insurer. Does the city’s high hit-and-run ranking make my case harder?

It makes the case different. Without the other driver, your own UM coverage becomes the main path to recovery, so the 24-hour reporting and physical-contact rules matter more than usual.

The insurer says I was partly to blame. Can I still recover?

The late-night ranking reflects how Inglewood fills and empties. SoFi Stadium opened on the former Hollywood Park racetrack site in 2020, the Kia Forum is also in the city, and the Clippers’ Intuit Dome opened in 2024 (Wikipedia). Concerts and games end late, and the crowd leaves all at once in cars, rideshare vehicles and on foot.

For the 2026 FIFA World Cup match days, the city warned of significant congestion and delays on every major road around the stadium and directed rideshare drop-offs to Pincay Drive and Yukon Avenue (stadium access page). Rideshare curbs are where passengers step into traffic and drivers stop without warning. Speed is the other part of the picture. A third-worst ranking for speed-related crashes reflects wide streets where a pedestrian struck at night has little chance of being seen. It is also where arguments about fault begin: the adjuster will ask what the pedestrian was wearing and whether they were in a crosswalk.

What the city’s safety plan found

Inglewood has not published a high-injury network. The closest equivalent is its Active Transportation and Safe Routes to School Plan, adopted May 17, 2022, which mapped five years of SWITRS bicycle and pedestrian crashes (Inglewood ATP).

• 249 pedestrian-involved collisions from 2014 to 2018, 7 of them fatal; about 110 occurred at intersections and 139 midblock.
• 112 bicycle-involved collisions over the same period, including 1 death.
• Pedestrian crashes were concentrated in Downtown Inglewood; bicycle crashes clustered on Florence Avenue, Manchester Boulevard, Century Boulevard, Prairie Avenue, Crenshaw Boulevard, Imperial Highway and Arbor Vitae Street.
• The plan’s stated goals are a 20% reduction in collisions in each five-year period and no deaths or serious injuries within two decades.

The midblock figure is significant. A pedestrian struck away from a crosswalk still has a claim, because California reduces an award by the injured person’s share of fault rather than eliminating it (CACI 405). Lighting, speed and the driver’s line of sight all bear on that share.

Earlier data shows the same pattern. Citing SWITRS, the plan records 12 pedestrian deaths and 168 pedestrian injuries from 2009 to 2013, and a 2013 assessment ranked the city 6th of 56 similar cities for pedestrians injured or killed per capita.

A checklist for the scene

• Call 911 and note who responds. On Inglewood streets, the report is written by the Inglewood Police Department. Crashes on I-405 or I-105 are handled by the CHP’s West Los Angeles Area, based at 6300 Bristol Parkway in Culver City (CHP West LA).
• See a doctor even if you walked away. Centinela Hospital Medical Center on East Hardy Street has an emergency department but is not a designated trauma center (Centinela), so paramedics take serious injuries elsewhere.
• After a crash at night, photograph the streetlights, the shadows and the place where you stood or rode.
• List every camera in view: storefronts, the K Line platforms at Fairview Heights or Downtown Inglewood, parking structures and doorbells.
• If you were driving, remember that the DMV expects its own SR-1 form, separate from the IPD report, within ten days of a crash that hurt anyone or caused more than $1,000 in damage (DMV).
• When an adjuster calls, give only contact and policy information, and decline a recorded statement while your diagnosis is still developing.

One records detail surprises many people. Inglewood disbanded its own fire department in 2000 and contracts with the Los Angeles County Fire Department (Wikipedia), so the paramedics’ report describing your injuries at the scene is a county record, requested from the county rather than from City Hall. That report often contains the first written note of a head strike, neck pain or confusion, which is why it should be requested early.

Deadlines, courts and damages

Someone injured on Prairie Avenue or Manchester Boulevard has, as a rule, until the second anniversary of the crash to sue the driver (CCP §335.1). A claim against the City of Inglewood or Metro, for example over a city truck, a bus or a defective crossing, is different: it must be presented in writing within six months (Gov. Code §911.2). A damaged car allows three years, and a child’s time limit is calculated separately.
