Hidden Hills Personal Injury Attorney
Los Angeles County
In 2023 the state recorded exactly one person injured in a traffic crash inside Hidden Hills (OTS). For a city of 1,675 people (Census) whose roughly 1.7 square miles sit behind gates, that is not surprising, and a Hidden Hills personal injury attorney should say so plainly rather than dress the figure up. The more useful question is where people from Hidden Hills actually get hurt, and the answer is mostly just beyond the gates or off the pavement altogether.
| OTS Group G, 2023 | Hidden Hills | Rank |
|---|---|---|
| Injury victims | 1 | 12 |
| Composite | 21 | |
| Daily miles | 1,920 | |
| DUI arrests | 0 | 6 |
Reading a one-victim year
OTS lines Hidden Hills up beside 31 other tiny cities; whoever ranks 1st on a line fares worst on it. One victim placed Hidden Hills 12th, which shows how far a single crash can move a tiny city up the list. Taking every category together, the city came out 21st. The arrest line works backward, with 1 for the fewest arrests, so 6th with zero arrests describes quiet streets rather than a hazard. OTS’s own estimate of daily driving inside the gates is a modest 1,920 vehicle miles. For an injured person, these figures mostly say what a case here will not depend on. A Hidden Hills claim will seldom rest on proof that a city street is known to be dangerous. It rests on the facts of one incident and on which agency’s road it happened on.
Where the risk sits
- The Ventura Freeway. Hidden Hills lies just north of U.S. 101 (Wikipedia). Freeway lanes belong to the Highway Patrol; after a 101 collision the number you want is on a CHP receipt, not a deputy’s card.
- Valley Circle Boulevard and the Long Valley gate. City records place the Valley Circle Boulevard and Long Valley Road intersection, at the gate, inside the City of Los Angeles. A 2007 Hidden Hills Public Safety Commission record said that limited what Hidden Hills could do about traffic there, and a 2014 council item took up linking the Long Valley gate with the Valley Circle freeway bridge (2007 record; 2014 minutes). Suppose the corner’s signal timing or sight line contributed to your crash. Responsibility for that would likely rest with Los Angeles, whose claims office must receive written notice inside the six-month window of Government Code §911.2.
- Streets without sidewalks. Inside the city, published descriptions note the absence of sidewalks and streetlights and the signs reading “Horses & children at play.” Walkers, children and riders on horseback therefore use the same lanes as cars. When one of them is struck, the driver’s speed and attention, especially near dusk without streetlights, carry most of the case. On an unlit lane bordered by riding trails, pictures shot at the hour of the crash, from the driver’s seat, are often the clearest proof of what was visible.
- Trails at the city’s northern edge. The Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve borders Hidden Hills to the north, with trails used by equestrians, hikers and mountain bikers. A bike-and-horse encounter on a narrow trail, or a fall from a spooked horse, can cause a serious head injury without any motor vehicle involved.
Horses, deputies and evacuations
A neighbor’s horse injured my child. Can we bring a claim?
It depends on the facts. An owner who left a gate open or rode carelessly near children may be responsible under ordinary negligence rules, while risks inherent in riding itself are treated differently. A bite from a neighbor’s dog is simpler, since California’s dog-bite statute imposes liability on the owner in most cases.
Why did a Lost Hills deputy respond instead of city police?
Because Hidden Hills relies on the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Malibu/Lost Hills Station in Calabasas for law enforcement. Ask for that station’s report number for any incident inside the city.
We were in a crash while evacuating from the Woolsey Fire. Does an emergency excuse the other driver?
Not automatically. On November 8, 2018, the Woolsey Fire forced evacuations in parts of Hidden Hills, Calabasas, Agoura Hills and Oak Park, and traffic backed up badly (CBS Los Angeles). Drivers in an evacuation still owe reasonable care for the conditions. Dashcam video from that night can be important.
Is a crash on the 101 just south of the city a Hidden Hills case?
For our purposes, yes; we represent residents wherever they were hurt. For the court, what counts is the crash location, which on the freeway may fall in a different judicial district than the city itself.
I crashed my mountain bike on a preserve trail. Can anyone be held responsible?
If another rider or a loose dog caused the fall, that person may be. Blaming the trail itself is another story, because the trail-immunity statute largely protects the public agencies that manage unpaved paths like those in the preserve (Gov. Code §831.4), so the facts of the Upper Las Virgenes fall need careful review.
The Northridge chart and the two-year limit
Records to request: the Lost Hills Station or CHP report; the full chart from Dignity Health Northridge Hospital Medical Center, an adult Level II trauma center for the west San Fernando Valley (EMSA); and video from the gate area, if any exists.
Suing the driver, rider or homeowner responsible is subject to California’s two-year limit in CCP §335.1. The courthouse is chosen by geography under the Los Angeles court’s 2024 general order, tying a Hidden Hills injury filing to the district of the incident. Because the gate intersection, the freeway and the city itself may not share one district, we check the exact location against the court’s locator before filing.
Our Hidden Hills clients
The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani represents Hidden Hills residents, their relatives and guests hurt on the 101, at the Long Valley gate, on the city’s lanes without sidewalks or on the preserve trails. On a Hidden Hills case we start by deciding whose road it was (the City of Los Angeles at the gate, Caltrans on the 101, or a road inside the gates), because that controls the claim deadlines; then we obtain the Lost Hills or CHP report and the Northridge chart.
Our Hidden Hills work includes car accidents and motorcycle crashes on the freeway, pedestrians and riders struck on lanes without sidewalks, bicycle and trail falls, dog bites and animal attacks, injuries on private property, brain injuries and wrongful death claims. If you want a Hidden Hills car accident lawyer to look at the 101 or gate crash, that first conversation is free. Our fee is contingent. We come to you. Phone (888) 952-2952. Or try the evaluator.
