Hawaiian Gardens Personal Injury Attorney

Los Angeles County

Hawaiian Gardens fits inside about one square mile, the smallest land area of any city in Los Angeles County (Wikipedia), yet 57 people were hurt or killed on its streets in 2023, and only thirteen of 103 comparable California cities had a higher toll (OTS 2023). Looking past the total, a Hawaiian Gardens personal injury attorney sees two groups carrying more than their share: people on bicycles, and people struck by drivers who did not stop. Late-night traffic around the card casino on Norwalk Boulevard is a third pattern. The sections below go through each kind of road user and what a claim looks like for them.

At a glance — Hawaiian Gardens

  • 13,373 residents by the Census Bureau’s 2025 estimate (Census Bureau), packed into roughly a square mile
  • Norwalk Boulevard, Pioneer Boulevard and Carson Street are the three major thoroughfares

Freeway crashes are not counted here. With totals this small, a single bad week can move a row, but the top two rows both sit inside the worst six of the group, and that is hard to dismiss as chance.

People on bicycles

Bike riders injured in 2023: 9, sixth in Group E (OTS)

In 2023, nine of the city’s injury victims were on bicycles, a 6th-place figure for Group E, and one of them was a child under 15. Geography explains part of it. The town’s three arterials, Norwalk, Pioneer and Carson, were only widened to modern standards by 1968, after most local streets had been dirt until the 1960s (Wikipedia), and a rider going almost anywhere in Hawaiian Gardens ends up on one of them alongside the through traffic.

Tip: When a driver tells the insurer a cyclist “came out of nowhere,” the answer is usually in the rider’s route, the light conditions at that hour and the storefront cameras along those three roads. What usually answers it:

  1. The rider’s route and where the bike was in the lane
  2. Street lighting and the time of sunset that day
  3. Storefront video along Norwalk, Pioneer or Carson

Our bicycle accident page covers the evidence in more depth, including what parents of young riders should keep.

Fleeing drivers: 9 injury crashes, behind only four Group E cities (OTS)

Hawaiian Gardens had 9 injury hit-and-runs in 2023, and for a city one square mile across, that is a striking figure: only four peer cities logged more. A person left injured by a driver who sped off will usually be paid, if at all, by the uninsured motorist portion of their own or a household member’s auto policy. Under Insurance Code section 11580.2, that coverage depends on two things:

  • The fleeing vehicle actually struck you or the vehicle you were in

  • Police, the Sheriff or the CHP learned of the crash within 24 hours

  • Phone 911 from where you were hit and ask for a Lakewood Station deputy

  • Say aloud, and then type into your phone, the color, body style and any plate characters you saw

  • Look for cameras on the shops along Norwalk, Pioneer or Carson nearest the impact point

  • Tell your own insurer about the crash within the period your policy requires, and save the recorded interview for later

Four situations from Hawaiian Gardens

Our 13-year-old was knocked off his bike on Carson Street. Whose claim is it?

There are two. Your son has his own injury claim, and its filing deadline is extended because he is a minor; you, as parents, have a separate claim for the medical bills you paid, which runs on the ordinary timeline.

A driver hit me as I pulled out of the casino lot. Can I bring a claim against the casino?

Mostly no; the driver who hit you is the defendant. The casino comes in only if a condition it controls, such as lighting, sightlines or the layout of the exit, contributed.

Do deputies actually look for hit-and-run drivers?

They do investigate. Whether a fleeing driver is ever named, though, frequently depends on what the injured person did in the first day: the police report, and asking nearby shops to hold their video.

I was rear-ended on the freeway driving home to Hawaiian Gardens. Who has the report?

The CHP. The Lakewood Station does not handle freeway collisions, so the file is with the Santa Fe Springs office.

Late-night drivers near the casino

Injury crashes after 9 p.m. and before 3 a.m.: 6, fifteenth in Group E (OTS) (OTS)

Much of the city’s budget rests on the Gardens Casino on Norwalk Boulevard, which by one estimate supplies about 65% of city revenue; Hawaiian Gardens is one of seven cities in the county that permit casino gambling (Wikipedia). The OTS data shows six injury crashes in the 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. window, which ranked the city 15th.

The 2019 crash at Pioneer and Carson

One crash shows what those hours can bring. At about 2:45 a.m. on October 13, 2019, at Pioneer Boulevard and Carson Street, an SUV broadsided another car in a three-vehicle collision that left two people dead and one injured, and Lakewood Station deputies handled the investigation (ABC7). In a broadside at that hour, liability usually comes down to which driver had a green light, so signal timing data and any video from the corner are the first evidence to request.

Alcohol and the casino’s responsibility

Drinking played a smaller role here than the casino might suggest, with three alcohol-involved victims, 58th in the group. When it does, California law shields the business that served an adult (Civil Code §1714), but not from its own premises liability: an unlit parking area, a dangerous lot exit or a fall inside the building.

Pedestrians, motorcyclists and motorists

Three pedestrians, two motorcyclists and eight speed-related crashes round out the table, ranking 41st, 34th and 26th. For motorists and their passengers, the disputes are the familiar ones: who ran the light, how much coverage the other driver carries, and whether the insurer can pin part of the blame on you. Even a driver partly responsible for a Carson Street collision keeps a claim for the share of the harm the other motorist caused (CACI 405).

The agencies behind a Hawaiian Gardens claim

The Sheriff’s Lakewood Station is the police agency for Hawaiian Gardens by contract, and its deputies keep the street-crash reports (LASD). Freeway crashes nearby belong to the CHP’s Santa Fe Springs office, which names Hawaiian Gardens on its list (CHP Area 550). In Long Beach, MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center operates a state-designated Level II trauma program for adults (EMSA).

A Hawaiian Gardens lawsuit belongs to the Southeast District: cases arising in Hawaiian Gardens are generally filed there under a May 2024 Superior Court order that routes injury cases by crash location (LASC), and the county locator names Bellflower as the city’s courthouse (LA County). The calendar has two dates on it:

  • Half a year from the crash, if a public body or public vehicle is involved, to present the written claim (Gov. Code §911.2)
  • Twenty-four months, if the defendant is a private motorist or company (CCP §335.1)

How we take on Hawaiian Gardens claims

Call Jacob represents people hurt in Hawaiian Gardens: cyclists and pedestrians, casino patrons and employees, and the residents who use Norwalk, Pioneer and Carson every day. On a Hawaiian Gardens case we request the Lakewood Station report, ask the businesses on those three roads to preserve video, and pursue the uninsured motorist claim when the driver fled.

As a Hawaiian Gardens car accident attorney, Call Jacob handles broadside and other intersection crashes like the 2019 collision at Pioneer and Carson, along with car accident and auto accident claims of every kind, and the firm’s work here also reaches hit-and-runs, injured cyclists and pedestrians, motorcycle and truck collisions, falls on unsafe property, dog bites and wrongful death.

Calls to (888) 952-2952 are answered by the firm, the case evaluator accepts a written description, and calljacob.com/es has Spanish-language information; the first consultation is free, and any fee comes out of a recovery.

For general information only. Your own facts, not these Hawaiian Gardens averages, decide your claim, and nothing here is legal advice.
