Greenfield Personal Injury Attorney

Monterey County

After a crash in Greenfield, the agencies that matter to your claim are spread up and down the Salinas Valley: the city’s own police department, a CHP office in King City for U.S. 101, a trauma center in Salinas and a civil courthouse on the Monterey Peninsula. For a city of 21,138 people in the 2025 Census estimate (Census), that is a long list of places to call. The tables below name each office, the records it keeps and the point at which a Greenfield personal injury attorney will ask for them, so a family juggling hospital visits in Salinas is not hunting for paperwork in King City months later.

In town

Crashes on city blocks are worked by the Greenfield Police Department, which listed 23 sworn officers in a 2017 city FAQ (City of Greenfield FAQ); with a force that size, the business card an officer hands you at the scene, with its incident number, is the quickest key to the finished report.

On the freeway and farm roads

U.S. 101 passes through Greenfield with four exits (Greenfield overview). Any collision on the freeway itself, and crashes on county farm roads outside city limits, belong to the CHP King City Area, which patrols about 60 miles of US-101 from Soledad to the San Luis Obispo County line, along with SR-198, Jolon Road and Metz Road (CHP King City). A freeway or farm-road report is therefore requested from 2 Broadway Circle in King City, and the Greenfield police station will not have a copy.

Natividad and the drive north

Trauma care on the state’s list is to the north: Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, rated Level II, is the lone EMSA-designated trauma hospital in Monterey County (EMSA). For a Greenfield family, an admission there means a long drive for visits and a second set of records from a hospital outside the south valley.

Tip: Keep a folder for every provider, from the ambulance company and Natividad to the local clinic and the physical therapist. Insurers add up the bills from those records, and a missing provider is a missing part of the claim.

The OTS rows for Greenfield

Measured against 102 Group E peers for 2023, Greenfield landed 46th overall in the OTS composite, a middling result in a table where 1 marks the worst (OTS 2023). Two rows sit far higher than that average:

  • 8th of 103: three people injured in collisions where the driver was younger than 21 and had alcohol in the system
  • 10th of 103: two children younger than 15 among the six people struck on foot

Only 22 victims in all, 70th, were counted on city streets, and nothing from the four freeway exits is in that figure. The 128 DUI arrests, ranked 97th, need care: arrest rankings run backward, with rank 1 for the fewest, so Greenfield was among the most active cities in its group for DUI arrests, which is a sign of enforcement rather than danger.

TAMC’s 2026 Regional Vision Zero Safety Action Plan notes that Greenfield has set up a traffic safety commission to take up local safety concerns (TAMC regional plan). That body is a place where residents can raise a dangerous crossing near a school.

Farm roads and the highway outside town

Greenfield sits between the Gabilan and Santa Lucia ranges in a valley that grows about 60% of the country’s leaf lettuce, with vineyards close by (Greenfield overview). The rural roads just outside town reflect that, lined with wood posts, open fields and irrigation ponds.

Two fatal wrecks investigated by the Highway Patrol show what happens when a vehicle leaves the pavement out here:

  1. Sept. 6, 2022, about 8:30 p.m. A westbound Jeep near 14th Avenue and Cypress Avenue hit a wood post and overturned into an irrigation pond. Both occupants were ejected and died (KION).
  2. September 2021. On northbound US-101 near Arroyo Seco Road, between Greenfield and Soledad, a pickup made an unsafe turn at highway speed and left the road into a farm field. An 18-year-old passenger from Greenfield was killed, the CHP King City Area said (KION).

For the passengers in crashes like the Jeep and pickup cases, the driver’s bodily injury liability coverage pays first; when someone dies, the parents, spouse or children step into the claim through a wrongful death action. When a road feature such as an unprotected pond or a post near the travel lane is involved, whoever owns and maintains that stretch of road becomes part of the investigation.

Government claims and the civil court

ClaimOfficeLimit
CityCity Hall6 months
Highway 101State6 months
DriverCourt2 years

Those two limits come from different statutes, the six-month public-entity rule in Gov. Code §911.2 and California’s two-year statute of limitations in CCP §335.1, and a family that misses the shorter one can lose a claim over a dangerous city crosswalk even with the longer one still open.

Should a Greenfield claim become a lawsuit, it goes north up the valley and over to the Peninsula, since Local Rule 6.2(B) seats every civil case at the Aguajito Road courthouse in Monterey (Local Rules).

Language and communication

The 2023 American Community Survey found that 82.1% of Greenfield residents speak Spanish at home, and many residents are Triqui-speaking families from Oaxaca (Greenfield overview). Every step in this directory is also explained in Spanish at calljacob.com/es. If Triqui or another Indigenous language is the one your family speaks best, tell us at the first call so we can plan how to communicate.

Watch out: When the other driver’s adjuster calls a Greenfield household a few days after the crash asking to tape your account, you are free to refuse in English, Spanish or Triqui and to send every later conversation through your lawyer.

A Greenfield records checklist

  • The right collision report: city police for in-town blocks, the Broadway Circle office for the freeway or a field road
  • The paramedics’ run sheet, then every chart from Natividad and any follow-up clinic
  • Photographs of the road edge, posts, ditches or ponds near the crash site
  • The other driver’s insurance information and any rideshare or employer coverage
  • The declarations page showing your UM and UIM limits, in case the at-fault driver carried little or no coverage

Greenfield questions about reports and claims

We crashed on a farm road past the city limits. Which office has the report?

Out past the city limits, the King City Highway Patrol office generally takes the report. When you call, have ready:

  • the date and approximate time
  • the nearest cross road, such as 14th Avenue or Arroyo Seco Road
  • the names of the drivers and passengers involved

My teenager was a passenger with a young driver who had been drinking. Can we bring a claim?

Yes. A passenger can claim against the driver’s insurance, and if an adult knowingly supplied alcohol at home to someone under 21, California law allows a claim against that adult too (Civ. Code §1714).

Our seven-year-old was hit near our house. Is her age held against her?

No. Jurors judge a young child by what is reasonable for her age, and they expect motorists on Greenfield’s residential blocks to slow for children; even if she darted out, pure comparative fault lets her recover the share of damages the driver caused (CACI 405).

Will I have to go to Monterey for my case?

Records requests, insurance negotiation and our meetings with you happen without that drive; the Aguajito Road trip comes up only when a filed case reaches a hearing or trial.

Greenfield cases we take on

The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani (Call Jacob) represents Greenfield residents, farmworkers and families injured on US-101, on the farm roads around 14th Avenue and Arroyo Seco Road, and on the city’s own streets. On a Greenfield case we confirm which agency took the report, Greenfield police or CHP King City, obtain the Natividad and ambulance records, and check the six-month deadline whenever a city or state road may be involved.

Because Greenfield’s numbers point to young impaired drivers and child pedestrians, our work here begins with car accidents, passenger claims and pedestrian accidents. We also handle these Greenfield cases:

  • produce-truck and tractor collisions where farm traffic meets the 101 ramps
  • motorcyclists and cyclists struck on the two-lane roads that run from town out to the Arroyo Seco vineyards
  • slip-and-fall injuries inside Greenfield markets, and dog attacks on children walking home
  • wrongful death claims like those that follow the pond and field crashes described above

Phone (888) 952-2952 to reach a Greenfield car accident lawyer, or open the case evaluator; either way the first review of your 101 or in-town crash costs nothing. There is no fee unless we win, and for families without a car to spare, we come to your house.

This directory gives general information about the offices that handle Greenfield crashes; for advice on your own claim, speak with a lawyer.
