Galt Personal Injury Attorney

Sacramento County

On a Saturday evening in June 2023, a semi-truck and a sedan left C Street near Liberty Road and came down onto southbound Highway 99 at the Central Galt exit. At least one person died, and both southbound lanes stayed shut while the CHP’s South Sacramento office worked the scene (CBS Sacramento). A collision that starts on a city street and ends on a state freeway upsets several things people tend to believe about injury claims here. Before you decide whether you need a Galt personal injury attorney, it helps to test those beliefs one at a time.

BeliefWhat the record shows
City officers will have every local crash reportHighway 99 and the county roads ringing town are CHP territory
Motorcycle injuries are rare in a town this sizeInjured riders put the city 13th of 93 peers in 2023
A big rig claim works like a fender-benderA carrier, its insurer and its logs enter the case
Anything near town is a Sacramento County matterSan Joaquin County begins at the southern edge
The ambulance ride will be shortKaiser South Sacramento, UC Davis and French Camp are all out of town
A road problem cannot be raised without a finished city planThe Safety Action Plan is still in draft, and the six-month claim clock runs anyway

Two police agencies and two counties

The belief: Galt police will have the report, whatever road I was on.

Galt’s own officers handle crashes on C Street and the rest of the city’s streets. State Route 99 cuts through the middle of town, however, and freeway collisions go to the CHP South Sacramento Area at 6 Massie Court in Sacramento, which also covers I-5, US-50 and about 500 miles of county-maintained roads in the south county (CHP). Unincorporated land in both Sacramento and San Joaquin Counties surrounds the city on every side (Wikipedia), so a crash a mile past the limits sign is usually a Highway Patrol file.

The Twin Cities Road interchange shows how tangled this gets. Caltrans and the City have planned to replace the signals at its frontage-road intersections with roundabouts and to add a southbound on-ramp (CEQAnet). One interchange, two agencies, and a crash there could be documented by either police force depending on the exact spot. The corridor is not new to local officials: a City Public Safety Committee reviewed Twin Cities Road collision and citation data back in 2015.

Motorcyclists in the OTS rankings

The belief: Serious motorcycle crashes are a big-city problem.

OTS sets Galt beside 93 California cities of roughly its population (OTS). For a city of 26,964 (Census), five motorcyclists hurt or killed was enough to rank 13th, where 1 marks the most. Most other categories were unremarkable:

  • Cyclists under 15: two (15th)
  • Cyclists, all ages: five (37th)
  • Hit-and-run crashes: four (43rd)
  • Everyone hurt or killed: 60 (44th)
  • Pedestrians: five (50th)
  • Speeding crashes: eight (61st)

Its composite of 68th means most peer cities had worse records. Officers logged 41 DUI arrests, a figure OTS sorts in the opposite direction, so it tells you about enforcement and nothing about risk.

Riders hear that they were speeding or hard to see. Those arguments go to the percentage of fault, not to whether the claim exists, because a California jury reduces a rider’s award by his or her own share and awards the rest (CACI 405). More on our motorcycle accident page.

Big rigs on Highway 99

The belief: A semi-truck claim is simply a larger car claim.

Freight and commuter traffic share 99 through the center of Galt, and the C Street crash proved that a truck on a city street can end up on the freeway. Once a commercial carrier is involved, the defendant list usually grows to include the trucking company and a separate commercial insurer. The driver’s hours, the truck’s maintenance history and any onboard data belong to the carrier, which is why the first letter we send on a Highway 99 truck file asks the company to keep all of it. For a Highway 99 big-rig claim, the truck accident page sets out which carrier records to demand.

Watch out: During the 2023 closure, drivers were detoured onto Frontage Road and Fairway (CBS Sacramento). Anyone rear-ended on those detours has a Galt police report, not a CHP one.

Hospitals in three directions

The belief: Care will be close to home.

None of the designated trauma centers that serve Galt is inside the city. The state list puts three within reach (EMSA):

HospitalDesignationDirection from Galt
Kaiser South SacramentoLevel II, adultsNorth on 99
UC DavisLevel IThe only one of the three with a pediatric designation
San Joaquin GeneralLevel II, adultsFrench Camp, across the county line

A patient moved from French Camp to a Sacramento hospital ends up with records in two counties. Request each provider’s emergency chart, scans and itemized bill separately so nothing is missing when the claim is valued.

A plan still in progress

The belief: Without a finished city safety plan, a road-design claim goes nowhere.

The City is still writing its Safety Action Plan, paid for through the Sacramento Transportation Authority and meant to find high-risk collision patterns; public workshops took place on May 27 and July 27, 2026 (SacTA; project site). Until it is adopted, the plan names no corridors, and this page names none on its behalf. When it is finished, it should be one of the first documents checked on any Galt crash where road design is in question, because it will record what the City knew about each location.

A road-defect claim has its own clock that does not pause for planners. The City of Galt, Sacramento County and Caltrans are public entities, so a claim that one of them caused or worsened the crash has a six-month filing deadline (Gov. Code §911.2). Lawsuits against another driver have a two-year clock (CCP §335.1). A lawsuit from the Sacramento County side of the line goes to that county’s Superior Court (Wikipedia); a crash south of the county line goes before a different court.

Our Galt practice

From Highway 99 truck wrecks to bike crashes near Galt schools, Call Jacob represents people hurt in and around the city. The first two questions on every Galt file are which agency took the report, Galt police or CHP South Sacramento, and which county the crash happened in, because together they decide the records, the court and sometimes the deadline.

Our Galt work covers:

  • Motorcycle crashes, which put Galt 13th in the state’s 2023 comparison
  • Big-rig and delivery-truck wrecks on the 99
  • Rear-end and intersection crashes on C Street and the frontage roads
  • Bicycle accidents involving children
  • Pedestrians, rideshare passengers and dog bite victims
  • Store and home falls
  • Wrongful death

There is no charge for a Galt car accident lawyer to look over your CHP or Galt police report and tell you where the claim stands. Fees are contingent on winning. The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani will send someone to you, whether you are home off Twin Cities Road or still at UC Davis. Telephone (888) 952-2952, or fill in the online case evaluator with the details of the Highway 99 or city-street crash. En español.

What Galt clients want to know

The crash happened on a county road outside Galt. Who took the report?

Probably the Highway Patrol’s South Sacramento office, since county roads outside the city are its beat. Inside the limits, ask Galt police.

I was taken to French Camp, not Sacramento. Does that change my claim?

No. It changes only where your records sit, so request them from San Joaquin General directly.

Our daughter was struck on her bike near school. How long do we have?

She has until her 20th birthday to sue the driver, since the two-year clock generally starts at 18. Her claim against a public agency gets no extension of the six-month window, and the court has to approve whatever settlement she receives.

The other driver claims I was going too fast. Can I still recover?

Yes. California lets a jury divide fault between two careless drivers, and you collect the other driver’s portion.

Use this page as general information about Galt crashes, the CHP and Highway 99 claim deadlines, so you know what to ask; it is not legal advice.
