The first thirty minutes

Ventura Boulevard is Encino’s main commercial street, with roughly 3,800 businesses employing about 27,000 people (Wikipedia). That density brings parked cars, driveway exits and left turns into shopping-center lots every few hundred feet. After a collision there, the first half hour largely determines how much evidence survives.

1. Call 911 and give the nearest cross street. “Ventura at Balboa” gets help to you faster than the name of a business.
2. Stay at the scene. 3. Photograph both cars before they are moved, then the signals, lane markings and any storefront cameras facing the street.
4. Ask people waiting at the Metro stops along the boulevard for their names and phone numbers; bus riders often see the entire approach.

Watch out: It is common for a driver to apologize at the curb and then dispute fault a week later. Write down exactly what was said while you still remember the words.

Which hospital treats you

Paramedics, not you, choose the hospital. In the county EMS agency’s 2025 directory, the community hospital on Ventura Boulevard is listed under Northridge Hospital Medical Center, the designated trauma center for this part of the Valley (LA County EMS). For the gravest injuries, the ambulance may instead go down the 405 through the pass to Westwood and the Level I trauma unit at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (Wikipedia). Note which of the three admitted you; an Encino records request sent to the wrong hospital can cost weeks.

Feeling well enough to drive home does not settle the medical question. Neck and back pain from a rear-end collision at a Ventura Boulevard light often appears the next morning. A visit to urgent care or your own doctor in the same week connects those symptoms to the crash date, and an insurer will look for any gap in treatment.

The police report on day one

Encino lies where two police jurisdictions meet. Tip: Vehicle Code §16000 requires you to report a crash to the DMV within 10 days when anyone is injured or property damage exceeds $1,000 (California Legislative Information). LAPD does not file that SR-1 form for you, and failing to file it puts your license at risk.

The insurer’s first call

Watch out: Around the second day, the other driver’s adjuster may call, friendly and brief, asking for a recorded statement “to get things moving.” You are not required to give one to the other side’s insurer. A statement given while you are on pain medication, before an MRI, tends to understate your injuries, and it may be quoted back to you months later.

Los Angeles produces an enormous volume of claims. Its 2023 total of 8,116 people killed or injured ranked last of 15 in the large-city group, and 1,104 crashes were speed-related (OTS). Adjusters handling that volume tend to make quick, low bodily injury offers when the medical documentation is thin. On days two and three, your task is to strengthen that documentation:

• Keep every receipt, including rideshare trips to medical appointments.
• Each evening, write two lines: which movements hurt, and which work shifts or school drop-offs you missed.
• Find your declarations page and look for UM/UIM and medical payments coverage; both apply to you regardless of where your car was.
• Copy any dashcam footage to a second device before it is overwritten.

Deadlines in the months that follow

The first 72 hours are about preserving evidence. After that, the calendar is governed by statute, and missing a date can end a claim.
