Elk Grove has had its own police department only since July 1, 2006; before then, the Sacramento County Sheriff patrolled the city under contract, so for a crash on a city street the report you need now comes from Elk Grove police rather than the Sheriff. Freeway crashes are different. The CHP’s South Sacramento Area, based at 6 Massie Court in Sacramento, patrols I-5, SR-99 and US-50 along with about **500 miles** of unincorporated south-county roads, so a collision on Highway 99 near Laguna Boulevard or Grant Line Road produces a CHP report instead. The court is the Sacramento County Superior Court. We have not listed a specific courthouse for Elk Grove injury cases because the court’s own filing information could not be confirmed for this page. If a lawsuit becomes necessary, we confirm the correct location before anything is filed. Bus service in the city is SacRT e-tran, which SacRT has operated since July 2019 and which became part of the SacRT district on July 1, 2021. Riders hurt on board an [e-tran bus](https://www.calljacob.com/personal-injury/bus-accident/), and drivers or cyclists struck by one, are dealing with SacRT, a public transit district, and California law generally gives them **six months** to present a written claim before any lawsuit ([Gov. Laguna Boulevard appears twice. If your crash happened at one of these five intersections, tell us which approach you were on and which direction the other driver was traveling. That detail determines which camera, if any, was pointed at the collision. The police list does not decide fault in your crash, but it does show that the intersection was a known problem. The police chief told the council that officers concentrate enforcement in high-collision areas and add patrols near schools at dismissal time. ## Red-light camera evidence Elk Grove has run a red-light camera program since 2007. On Aug. 26, 2026, the council approved five new camera sites and increased the vendor contract by more than **$2.35 million** through 2031, even as the Sacramento County Sheriff ended its own program. New cameras were approved for westbound Laguna Boulevard and southbound Bruceville Road, southbound Elk Grove Boulevard and northbound Franklin Boulevard, and southbound Elk Grove Florin Road at Sheldon Road. Existing sites include Laguna Boulevard at Laguna Springs Drive near the SR-99 interchange and Elk Grove Florin Road at Bond Road. **Tip:** If your crash happened at one of the camera intersections above, tell your lawyer right away. A written request to preserve the images should go to the city before anyone assumes the footage will still be there. A red-light image can settle the question that most intersection cases turn on: who had the green. Without it, the case often depends on two drivers who each insist the light was theirs. ## What to gather in the first week - The Elk Grove Police or CHP South Sacramento collision report, plus the officer’s name and badge number - Red-light camera images and video, if the crash was at a camera intersection - Business surveillance video along Laguna, Elk Grove or Franklin boulevards - Ambulance run sheet and emergency department records - Payroll records covering the shifts you missed while recovering - Photos of your injuries, taken every few days as they heal Hit-and-run was not one of Elk Grove’s worse categories in 2023, yet **46** crashes that hurt or killed someone ended with the responsible driver gone ([OTS 2023](https://www.ots.ca.gov/media-and-research/crash-rankings-results/?wpv-wpcf-year=2023&wpv-wpcf-city_county=Elk%20Grove)), and in a case like that your own uninsured motorist (UM) coverage often becomes the main source of payment, and your insurer will expect the crash to have been reported to police promptly. ## Hospitals and medical records Elk Grove does not yet have a full hospital with an emergency department. Dignity Health is building one on Wymark Drive near Elk Grove Boulevard; its opening date had not been confirmed when this page was written ([Dignity Health](https://www.dignityhealth.org/sacramento/about-us/growing-with-you/elk-grove-hospital)). Until it opens, seriously injured people are usually taken north to one of two trauma centers on the [state list published by California EMSA in August 2025](https://emsa.ca.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/71/2025/08/California-Designated-ACS-Verified-Trauma-Centers-8.22.25.pdf): - **Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento**, a Level II center and the nearer option from Elk Grove - **UC Davis Medical Center**, a longer drive up Highway 99 into Sacramento, and the Level I center for both injured adults and injured children Ask Kaiser or UC Davis for the full chart rather than a visit summary: the emergency physician’s notes, X-ray and CT results, discharge instructions and the name of any specialist you were sent to. Insurers look for gaps between the crash and your first treatment, and between visits. Medical liens from your health plan or a treating provider will also be paid out of any settlement, so we collect those balances early. ## Highway 99 and the south end of the city ### Sky River Casino Sky River Casino opened in August 2022 at Promenade Parkway and Kammerer Road, just off SR-99. Traffic backed up for miles on the highway, residents complained of drivers cutting through neighborhoods, and the council approved additional police for casino traffic ([AOL](https://www.aol.com/sky-river-traffic-heavy-elk-215800404.html)). Late-night trips to and from the casino are worth noting in a claim if the other driver may have been drinking; the police report and any receipts or surveillance from the evening can matter. ### Grant Line Road Grant Line Road runs **19 miles** from the SR-99 interchange toward Rancho Cordova and US-50 and carries freight traffic. It is scheduled for a **$55 million** safety and freight upgrade, anticipated by 2030 ([Capital SouthEast Connector JPA](https://connectorjpa.com/grant-line-budget-request)). Elk Grove belongs to Group B, which holds the 62 cities of 100,001 to 250,000 residents, and in each category the city with the most victims is placed first ([OTS 2023](https://www.ots.ca.gov/media-and-research/crash-rankings-results/?wpv-wpcf-year=2023&wpv-wpcf-city_county=Elk%20Grove)). None of these numbers include crashes on Highway 99 or I-5; those are CHP cases and are left out of the city rankings. Its composite ranking was **50 of 62**. Children on bicycles are the exception. **Thirteen** riders under 15 were hurt or killed on Elk Grove streets that year, and only four comparable cities recorded a worse figure. Speed is the other category where the city sits closer to the middle of its group than its overall numbers would suggest. A child hurt on an Elk Grove street has longer to sue than an adult does, because California generally tolls the two-year limit until age 18. The six-month claim against the City of Elk Grove over a crosswalk, signal or school-zone design is not paused the same way. Pedestrian safety is also on the city’s agenda. A city study named nearly 60 roads, including Waterman Road, for possible speed-limit reductions ([CBS Sacramento](https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/sacramento/news/elk-grove-residents-say-safer-places-to-walk-needed-more-than-lower-speed-limits)). If an insurer says you share the blame, California’s pure comparative fault rule ([CACI 405](https://www.justia.com/trials-litigation/docs/caci/400/405/)) only reduces your award by your share; turning left at Whitelock Parkway with 30% of the fault, for example, still leaves 70% of the damages recoverable. Insurers know this rule well, which is why an adjuster may ask for a recorded statement before you have spoken with a lawyer. ## Answers to frequent questions ### Should I call Elk Grove police or the Sheriff after a crash in the city? Call the Elk Grove Police Department. Since 2006, collisions on city streets such as Bruceville Road and Calvine Road have been police cases, not Sheriff cases; on SR-99 or I-5, the CHP responds instead. If anyone is injured, dial 911 first. ### The crash happened at a red-light camera. Can I get the video? Not simply by asking.
