Culver City Personal Injury Attorney
Los Angeles County
Twelve people died in traffic crashes in Culver City from 2017 through 2021, three times as many as in Beverly Hills or West Hollywood over the same five years (West Hollywood Vision Zero). Culver City covers only about 5.1 square miles, with the 405, the 10 and the Marina Freeway (SR-90) at its edges and Ballona Creek running through it (Wikipedia). What follows is a Culver City personal injury attorney’s answer to seven questions, from who writes the report to which courthouse hears the case, built on Culver City PD, CHP and state records.
Jump to a question
Does Culver City PD or the CHP take the report?
Culver City PD, the city’s own department, writes up collisions on Sepulveda, Washington and the rest of the city’s streets (Wikipedia). The freeways are different. Freeway crashes go to the CHP West Los Angeles Area (565), whose office happens to sit inside Culver City at 6300 Bristol Parkway and whose beat includes the 405 and the 10 (CHP).
So a crash on Sepulveda Boulevard or Washington Boulevard usually produces a Culver City PD report, while a crash on the 405 produces a CHP report from the Bristol Parkway office. Knowing which agency has your report can save weeks, because each releases its reports through its own process.
How do Culver City’s streets compare?
Culver City’s 2023 composite rank was 26th, inside the most dangerous third of the 93 Group D cities (OTS).
| 2023 measure | Culver City | Rank of 93 |
|---|---|---|
| Killed or injured | 176 | 37 |
| Speed-related crashes | 25 | 27 |
| Motorcyclists | 17 | 28 |
| Alcohol-involved victims | 21 | 34 |
| Hit-and-run crashes | 12 | 37 |
| Pedestrians | 13 | 39 |
| Bicyclists | 10 | 46 |
| Night crashes | 12 | 54 |
The longer view is consistent. From 2017 through 2021, state crash records counted 12 deaths and 79 serious injuries in Culver City, 91 in all, and pedestrian collisions accounted for 19 of them, or about 21% (West Hollywood Vision Zero). That five-year comparison comes from a table West Hollywood prepared for its own Vision Zero program, not from a Culver City document.
After the composite score, Culver City’s worst positions in the table are speed, at 27th, and motorcycle victims, at 28th with 17 riders. Culver City is a work destination: Sony Pictures Studios employs about 3,900 people, and Amazon MGM Studios, Apple, TikTok, NPR West and Westfield Culver City all draw commuters (Wikipedia). That commuter traffic puts more cars, and more turning movements, on the streets a rider uses. When an insurer says a lane-splitting rider caused a Culver City collision, the response is laid out on our motorcycle accident page.
Four shorter questions
I was hit on my bike in a shared bus-bike lane on Washington Boulevard. Who is at fault?
That depends on what each person did, the lane markings in place on that date and whether a bus or a car was involved. A CityBus in the picture brings in the city’s six-month claim rule.
The driver who hit me in Fox Hills was a rideshare driver. Whose insurance pays?
If the driver had the app on and was carrying or headed to a passenger, the rideshare company’s commercial policy generally applies. With the app off, the driver’s own auto insurance responds first.
Will my case be different if I live outside Culver City?
No. A crash here is handled under California law, and the court is chosen by the crash location, not your home address.
I work at one of the studios and was hurt driving for work. Is this workers’ compensation?
Possibly both. A studio employee hurt on a work errand can open a workers’ comp claim with the employer and also pursue the outside driver who caused the crash.
What about CityBus and E Line injuries?
Culver CityBus, founded in 1928, runs seven lines and a downtown circulator, with a transit center at Westfield Culver City, and the Metro E Line stops at Venice and Robertson Boulevards, on the stretch of Venice that carries State Route 187 (Wikipedia).
Both bus systems are public agencies, so the claim starts differently. Whether you were thrown from your seat on a CityBus or struck by a Metro bus at a crosswalk, the six-month window applies, and the claim goes to whichever agency ran the vehicle (Gov. Code §911.2).
Watch out: If a bus was involved, ask the agency in writing to keep any video and the operator’s records. Neither is kept forever.
Our bus accident page explains what transit operators and their insurers usually dispute.
Is drunk driving worse in Culver City?
The data says yes, especially among young adults. Culver City recorded 21 alcohol-related victims in 2023 (34th), and sixteen of them were hurt in crashes where the drinking driver was a young adult, a measure on which the city ranked 18th (OTS). Culver City PD’s 160 DUI arrests that year ranked 81st of 93; that list counts up from the fewest arrests, which places the department near the top for enforcement.
A crash on July 7, 2020, shows what those numbers mean on the street. At 5:20 in the morning two cars collided at Sepulveda Boulevard and Centinela Avenue; one rolled over and the other caught fire. One man was killed and another seriously injured, and Culver City police suspected alcohol (FOX 11).
When a drunk driver injures you, the DUI arrest report becomes part of your evidence, the criminal case and your injury claim move separately, and punitive damages can be sought in addition to medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
Can the 2021 safety plan help my claim?
It can. In November 2021, Culver City’s Public Works department completed its first Local Road Safety Plan with the consultant TJKM, using a systemic analysis to identify high-risk intersections, road segments and mid-block locations (City of Culver City). If your crash happened at a location the plan flagged, that is evidence the city knew the location carried risk, which matters in a claim that a street’s design or signals contributed.
The city has also reworked downtown lanes. Culver City Crossroads reported that the council voted 3-2 in September 2023 to convert the MOVE Culver City pilot on Washington and Culver Boulevards into shared bus and bike lanes, and approved a construction contract in January 2024 (Culver City Crossroads). Lane changes like these can affect what a driver or cyclist should have expected at the time of a crash, so the date matters.
How long do I have to act?
| Claim | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Driver | 2 years |
| Transit agency | 6 months |
| Property only | 3 years |
Statutes: CCP §335.1 (two years) and Gov. Code §911.2 (six months). A driver who was partly careless on Sepulveda keeps a claim, reduced by the percentage a jury assigns (CACI 405).
Which Los Angeles County courthouse? The crash address decides it. Under a 2024 order, the judicial district containing that address is where the lawsuit is heard (LASC General Order).
Where will I be treated?
Southern California Hospital at Culver City employs roughly 1,242 people, yet the state’s trauma list does not include it (Wikipedia). For major trauma, the state lists two Level I centers nearby, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Westwood and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (EMSA).
