Coronado’s drivers travel only about 66,500 vehicle miles a day, a small figure for a city of its size, yet the Office of Traffic Safety ranked it 1st of 103 for bicyclists killed or injured in 2023, and 1st again for riders under 15 (OTS). The harm is not spread evenly. It falls mostly on children, older pedestrians, motorcyclists and visitors, and this page is organized around them. OTS considers both population and daily vehicle miles when it ranks a city, and Coronado’s mileage is very low. That makes its rankings more significant, not less. On an island where most trips are short, the people being hurt are mainly those outside a car.

Children on bicycles

No city in Coronado’s population group had a worse record for young cyclists in 2023, when nine children under 15 were struck while riding (OTS).

The streets are flat, the Village, the beaches and the schools are close together, and children here ride nearly everywhere. What a family does in the first days after a child’s crash affects how well the claim holds up months later, after the child has healed and memories have faded.

A checklist for parents in the first week

• Have a doctor examine your child even if the only visible injury is a scrape; concussion symptoms can appear a day later
• Keep the bike, e-bike or scooter and the helmet exactly as they came home, without cleaning or repairing them
• Write down what happened and where, in your child’s own words, before other accounts shape the memory
• Walk the block and note any homes or shops with doorbell or security cameras facing the street

Pedestrians young and old

Coronado’s two worst pedestrian rankings involve the youngest and the oldest walkers, which reflects who is on the sidewalks at school pickup and in the middle of the morning (OTS).

Orange Avenue, the downtown commercial street of shops, restaurants and theaters, has the heaviest foot traffic (Wikipedia). Older pedestrians face particular issues in a claim. Fractures heal more slowly after 65, a hip injury can end a person’s ability to live independently, and Medicare, which usually pays first, will expect to be reimbursed from any settlement. Motorcyclists and commuters on SR-75

The bridge and the Silver Strand are both part of State Route 75, and two groups who rely on them rank high in the data.

Motorcycle riders

Only two of the 103 cities ranked worse than Coronado for motorcyclist casualties (OTS). The Silver Strand, the narrow isthmus highway to Imperial Beach, and the San Diego–Coronado Bridge are the two land routes onto the island, and both carry heavy commuter traffic. Insurers often claim the rider was speeding. Navy personnel and bridge commuters

Naval Air Station North Island employs between 11,000 and 14,999 people, and Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, home to Navy SEAL training, lies along the Strand. Those commutes funnel onto the bridge, a five-lane span opened in 1969 with a moveable barrier that shifts lanes for rush hour, and onto State Route 75 along the Strand (Wikipedia).

When a commuter is hit on the bridge approach or on Silver Strand Boulevard, two questions arise early. First, was the person driving for work? An employee on the job may have a workers’ compensation claim in addition to the injury claim against the at-fault driver. Second, did a government vehicle or road condition contribute? Involvement by a city truck or a defect on a Caltrans road brings in Government Code §911.2, which requires a written claim to that agency within six months.
