Compton Personal Injury Attorney

Los Angeles County

Compton has no police department of its own, and that single fact decides who shows up after a crash, where the report lives and which public agency a claim may involve. Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Compton Station work collisions on city streets, and Highway Patrol officers take the freeways. What follows is the first 72 hours and the months beyond, step by step, in the order a Compton personal injury attorney would want each task done, with the local office, hospital or courthouse attached to every step.

Speed matters more here than in most places. For a city of roughly 90,500 residents (Census, July 2025) the 2023 count of people killed or injured, 689, was the 6th-highest of 103 comparable California cities, along with the 2nd-highest number of hit-and-run injury crashes and the 4th-highest number of late-night crashes (OTS 2023). Fleeing drivers and dark streets both make early evidence harder to recover later.

Takeovers, deputies and other common questions

Why did a sheriff’s deputy come to my crash instead of city police?

Compton contracts with the Sheriff’s Department for policing instead of running its own force, so the station’s deputies take the traffic reports that city officers would handle elsewhere.

I was watching a takeover and got hit. Can I still bring a claim?

Being in the crowd does not automatically bar recovery, though the driver’s insurer will argue you accepted the danger. The video that bystanders posted is usually what settles who was behind the wheel and how you were struck.

A car fleeing a takeover hit my relative blocks away. Who is responsible?

Responsibility rests with the fleeing driver, and if investigators never find that person, the family’s own uninsured motorist benefits step in. Raymond Olivares, 27, was killed in February 2023 when a car reportedly fleeing a nearby takeover at close to 100 mph struck him and his fiancée.

Will I have to go to court in downtown Los Angeles?

Generally not. The Superior Court’s district rule keeps a Compton injury case in Compton, at the courthouse on West Compton Boulevard, rather than at Stanley Mosk downtown.

What if the crash happened on a freeway?

Freeway collisions near Compton are Highway Patrol cases, so the report comes from the Hamilton Avenue office in Torrance, not from the Sheriff’s station, and an auto accident attorney in Compton will request it there.

The first 72 hours

Hour one at the crash scene

Dial 911 and ask for paramedics whenever anyone complains of pain. On a surface street, the responding deputies come from the LASD Compton Station, which polices the city under contract, and a special group of 10 deputies and two sergeants there focuses on street takeovers (ABC7). On the freeway, expect officers from the CHP South Los Angeles Area, whose published service area names Compton and Willowbrook (CHP).

While the cars still sit where they stopped, take wide photos showing the intersection and the signal heads, then close photos of each bumper, the debris field and any tire marks. A phone photo of the other driver’s license, registration and insurance card saves a transcription mistake later.

Watch out: Among 103 peer cities, only one saw more drivers flee after hurting someone than Compton’s 78 hit-and-run injury crashes of 2023 (OTS). If a car speeds off down Rosecrans or Long Beach Boulevard, say the partial plate, color and direction into a voice memo right away, and give it to the deputy before leaving. When the fleeing car is never traced, your uninsured motorist carrier will ask whether the Sheriff heard about it that same day.

Injuries at or near a takeover

The Los Angeles Times has described Compton as the region’s “mecca” of street takeovers, and Sheriff’s figures counted 498 of them in the city during 2022 and 166 more between January and mid-April 2023 (Los Angeles Times via Yahoo). Takeovers have centered on Rosecrans at Long Beach Boulevard, Rosecrans at Central Avenue, where the city installed Botts’ Dots to stop spinouts, and Compton Boulevard at Atlantic Avenue. A suspected takeover at North Wilmington Avenue and West Stockwell Street ended with two young women dead, and police told KTLA that spectators hit at these gatherings frequently never report it (KTLA).

Seek care and make the report regardless. Crowds at a takeover film everything and post it within hours, so download or screen-record any clip showing the car or driver before the account owner deletes it.

The first night

There is no trauma center inside city limits, so paramedics route serious injuries to one of three hospitals on the state’s designated list (EMSA). For a Rosecrans or Long Beach Boulevard crash, the choices are St. Francis in neighboring Lynwood, an adult Level II center; Harbor-UCLA near Torrance, an adult Level I center; and MemorialCare in Long Beach, whose Level II trauma program treats both adults and children, with the crew deciding by the type of injury.

People who went home from the scene should be seen in an emergency room or urgent care before the next day ends. Whiplash and concussion symptoms commonly build over a day or two, and an insurer reviewing a claim from Compton will point to every unexplained day between the collision and the first doctor visit.

Day two and the storefront cameras

  1. Get the number. Phone the Compton Station for the incident or report number, or, for a freeway crash, contact the Highway Patrol’s South Los Angeles office at 19700 Hamilton Avenue in Torrance.
  2. Walk the block. Gas stations, liquor stores, tire shops and taco stands along Long Beach Boulevard, Rosecrans and Compton Boulevard frequently run security cameras that overwrite in a matter of days.
  3. Ask for the clip. Whoever is in charge can export it or at least hold it; jot down which corner each camera faces so a lawyer can follow up in writing.

Darkness makes witnesses scarce. No peer city had more late-night injury crashes than Compton in 2022, when 102 of them happened between nine in the evening and three in the morning, earning the worst rank of all 104 (OTS 2022). After midnight the only neutral account may come from a neighbor on a porch, a bus driver or a night-shift worker heading home, so knock on doors near the scene.

Day three and the insurance calls

Notify your own insurance company, as the policy requires, but you have no obligation to give the other driver’s adjuster a recorded interview. Saying “my lawyer will be in touch” is enough.

Walkers are covered too. Forty-eight pedestrians were killed or injured on Compton streets in 2023, 8th-highest of 103 cities, and a person struck on foot can often turn to their own auto policy when the driver carries little or no insurance. Before you speak with a Compton pedestrian accident lawyer, our pedestrian accident page sets out the coverage rules for people hit while crossing.

The weeks and months after

Days four through seven

Keep every follow-up appointment the emergency doctor ordered and fill each prescription. A few lines each evening about pain, sleep, the shifts you missed and the chores you could not manage become the most persuasive proof of pain and suffering months later.

Tip: By the end of the first week, the Rosecrans video, the bumper damage and the porch witnesses are either saved or slipping away. That is why this is the week to bring in a lawyer, before the storefront systems cycle over.

A month of records

Four weeks after the crash, a Compton claim should rest on these documents:

  • The deputy’s or trooper’s collision report, including the scene sketch and each driver’s account
  • Charts and imaging from St. Francis, Harbor-UCLA or Long Beach
  • Pay stubs, timecards or a supervisor’s letter covering each day of work lost to the Compton crash
  • The body-shop estimate or the insurer’s total-loss figure
  • The storefront and takeover videos you saved, plus photographs and the neighbors’ phone numbers
  • Your policy’s declarations page, which matters here because so many Compton crash drivers flee

Should the insurer insist you crossed Rosecrans mid-block, a jury that agreed would lower your award by whatever percentage it assigned you, and the driver would still owe the remainder (CACI 405).

Six months and the government claim

A broken streetlight on a city block, a Sheriff’s patrol car, a county truck or a Metro bus or A Line train each brings a public agency into the case. California requires anyone hurt by a city, county or transit agency to deliver a written claim within six months, so a Compton family has half a year to put the City, the County or Metro on notice (Government Code section 911.2). Families who wait for the two-year deadline lose these claims.

Two years and the Compton Courthouse

A private driver who hit you near the A Line station or on Wilmington can be sued for two years after the crash (CCP §335.1), and a child’s deadline is calculated differently.

Lawsuits over crashes here stay close to home: the Superior Court’s district rule points them to the South Central District, whose Compton Courthouse on West Compton Boulevard is generally where a Rosecrans or Long Beach Boulevard case is filed (LA County locator). Any Los Angeles County personal injury attorney filing a Compton case confirms the district with the court’s locator before the complaint goes in.

Our practice covers auto accident claims, hit-and-run collisions, pedestrians struck on city streets, injuries to takeover spectators and bystanders, motorcycle accidents, injuries on Metro buses and the A Line, big-rig crashes, slip-and-fall injuries at local businesses and wrongful death.
