Colton Personal Injury Attorney
San Bernardino County
Only two California cities of Colton’s size had more traffic casualties in 2023, when 382 people were killed or injured on Colton streets (OTS 2023). The year before, the figure was 329. If you were hurt here, or you lost someone, this page explains which road users the numbers point to, where the City’s own safety plan locates the crashes, and what a Colton personal injury attorney examines first.
Who gets hurt on Colton streets
Two public documents supply most of what follows: the state Office of Traffic Safety rankings, and the Colton Citywide Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, which studied every reported collision inside city limits from January 2018 through December 2023 (Colton CCSAP).
| Measure (2023) | Colton | Peer rank |
|---|---|---|
| People killed or injured | 382 | 3rd |
| Nighttime injury crashes | 47 | 2nd |
| Hit-and-run injury crashes | 25 | 19th |
| Drinking driver, age 21–34 | 15 | 22nd |
| Pedestrians killed or injured | 20 | 26th |
| Child pedestrians | 4 | 8th |
| Motorcyclists killed or injured | 13 | 34th |
A rank of 1 means the most victims in the group. The state’s figures leave out I-10 and I-215 entirely, since Highway Patrol officers work the freeway crashes.
Drivers after dark
Colton’s after-dark figure separates it from almost every comparable city. Between nine at night and three in the morning, Colton streets saw 47 injury crashes in 2023, up from 36, and only one city in the group recorded more.
Darkness changes how a claim is proven. There are fewer bystanders on Valley Boulevard at 1 a.m., the other driver’s account goes unchallenged, and the gas station camera that caught the impact is often the only neutral witness. The safety plan adds a pattern worth knowing: at Colton’s busiest intersections the leading cause was a driver violating a signal or sign, while unsafe speed and drifting onto the wrong side of the road drove crashes along its longer corridors.
Pedestrians and children
People walking make up a sliver of Colton’s collisions and a large part of its tragedies. Colton’s 2023 roadway safety plan measured the imbalance: crashes involving someone on foot or on a bicycle were about 3% of the total from 2016 to 2020, and about 29% of those that killed or gravely injured someone. The newer plan tallied 90 pedestrian-related collisions across its six-year window.
For child pedestrians under 15, Colton’s four victims in 2023 put it eighth in the peer ranking, a far worse placing than its 32nd for pedestrians 65 and older. When a child is struck walking to school, we start with the crosswalk paint, the posted school-zone speed, and whether either City plan had already flagged that block. Our pedestrian accident page explains California’s right-of-way rules for marked and unmarked crosswalks.
Motorcyclists
Thirteen of Colton’s 2023 victims were on motorcycles. On corridors like Reche Canyon Road, where the action plan found unsafe speed to be a leading cause of crashes, an insurer will be quick to say the rider was going too fast even when a car turned across his path. Even if a jury agreed in part, California’s pure comparative fault rule would trim the rider’s recovery by that percentage rather than erase it.
People left at the scene
Twenty-five Colton crashes in 2023 involved a driver who left an injured person behind, placing the city 19th. If that driver is never identified, payment comes through the uninsured motorist part of your own policy, which is one more reason to report the hit-and-run to police right away. A crash on Mount Vernon or La Cadena is reported to Colton Police; one on the I-10 ramps goes to the CHP office on Western Avenue in San Bernardino.
Truck drivers and freeway commuters
Colton earned the name Hub City from the meeting of Interstate 10, Interstate 215 and two transcontinental rail lines. Highway Patrol officers from the San Bernardino Area station on Western Avenue handle crashes on I-10, I-15, I-215 and SR-210, and the station names Colton among the places it patrols (CHP). After a big-rig collision on those freeways, the carrier’s driver logs, maintenance files and engine data are evidence the trucking company controls, which is why our truck accident cases begin with a demand that it keep them.
Families after a fatal crash
The deadliest year in the plan’s window was 2021, when Colton recorded four fatal and 13 severe-injury collisions. Single-vehicle crashes claim lives here too: in November 2024 a 22-year-old driver died after her car hit a tree in the 300 block of West Mill Street, and her three passengers were injured (CBS Los Angeles). Passengers hurt that way look to the driver’s liability policy, and a spouse, child or parent who loses someone may bring a wrongful death claim built on the officers’ measurements, photographs and diagram.
Where the City’s plan finds the crashes
These intersections logged the most reported collisions between 2018 and 2023. The last column counts collisions that killed someone or caused a severe injury.
| Intersection | Count | Severe |
|---|---|---|
| La Cadena & Valley | 110 | 4 |
| Pepper & San Bernardino | 77 | 4 |
| Mount Vernon & Washington | 67 | — |
| Rancho & Valley | 57 | — |
| Cooley & Washington | 49 | 2 |
| Reche Canyon & Washington | 48 | — |
| Rancho & Mill | 47 | — |
| Mount Vernon & Fairway | 40 | — |
| Bluff & Washington | 36 | 2 |
City engineers placed Cooley at Washington first on their list of priority projects and Mount Vernon at Fairway second. Nearly half of all reported collisions, 46%, happened inside an intersection, and another 34% happened close to one.
The plan scored road segments separately. Washington Street led with 65 midblock collisions, two of them fatal or severe, and Mount Vernon Avenue followed with 63. Seven of the ten corridors in the plan, these two included, are mapped on the regional High Injury Network kept by the Southern California Association of Governments. Reche Canyon Road logged 55 and Rancho Avenue 54.
Agua Mansa Road is the outlier. Its 41 collisions are fewer than the others, but five of them were fatal or severe, the highest such count on any Colton corridor. Head-on and run-off-road impacts at speed are what produce the fractures, spinal damage and traumatic brain injuries that shape the value of a case.
Watch out: At a corner like La Cadena and Valley, the cameras that matter belong to private shops, and private systems commonly record over old video within days. Ask the managers in person, that week, to set the clip aside.
Being near the top of the City’s list is not proof that Colton caused your crash. It shows that engineers had studied the corner’s crash history before you arrived there.
Arrowhead Regional and Loma Linda
Seriously injured people from across the region are brought to San Bernardino County’s public Level I trauma center, which stands on Pepper Avenue in Colton. Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, at 400 North Pepper Avenue, also runs the only burn center for San Bernardino, Riverside, Inyo and Mono counties, and its emergency department ranks as the second busiest in the state (ARMC). A second Level I center, Loma Linda University Medical Center, sits a short drive east and is designated for children as well as adults (EMSA).
The second-ranked intersection on the City’s list, Pepper at San Bernardino Avenue, is near the Arrowhead campus, so hospital traffic passes through it.
Deadlines and the courthouse
If you believe the timing of the signal at Pepper and San Bernardino, or a broken curb on Washington Street, contributed to your injury, the claim against the City of Colton has to be presented within six months (Gov. Code §911.2). San Bernardino County claims carry the same limit. Suing the motorist who ran that light is a separate track with a longer clock: two years for your bodily injuries (CCP §335.1), and three for the damage to your car.
If talks with the insurer break down, the Superior Court’s filing guide sends a Colton lawsuit to the San Bernardino Justice Center downtown (Superior Court).
Before any of that, gather these during the first week:
- The cross street and the time, especially after dark
- The Colton PD or CHP Area 860 incident number
- A request to nearby businesses to hold their video
- Every Arrowhead or Loma Linda bill and discharge sheet
- A polite refusal if the other insurer wants you on tape
Questions Colton families ask
A driver hit me on Valley Boulevard late at night and drove off. What now?
Make sure Colton Police have your report and tell your own insurance company about the hit-and-run. The next morning, go back to the stretch of Valley where it happened and note every storefront or gas station with a lens pointed at the road.
Is the City of Colton responsible for a dangerous intersection?
The City can be held responsible when the road itself was in a dangerous condition, such as a signal that malfunctioned or a sightline blocked by City landscaping, and that condition helped cause the collision. The 2025 plan’s crash counts for the intersection are one way to show the City knew its history.
Which medical records will the adjuster ask for?
Expect a request for everything from Arrowhead Regional or Loma Linda:
- the ER chart
- CT, MRI and X-ray reports
- discharge instructions and prescriptions
- notes from every therapy session
Unexplained weeks without care are what adjusters seize on.
My son was struck near his school. Is his deadline different?
For a lawsuit, a minor’s two-year clock normally starts at age 18. A claim against the City of Colton is different: the six-month window runs from the injury, so it should be filed promptly.
Will my case end up at the courthouse on Third Street?
Most do not. The majority of injury claims settle with the insurer, and a complaint is filed only when negotiation stalls.
How Call Jacob handles Colton cases
Call Jacob takes on injury cases for people hurt on Colton’s streets, from Reche Canyon Road to La Cadena Drive, and for commuters caught in collisions on the I-10 and I-215 interchanges. On a new Colton matter we order the Colton Police or CHP San Bernardino Area report, compare the crash location with the 2025 action plan’s ranked intersections and corridors, and gather the Arrowhead Regional or Loma Linda chart. Where a City-maintained signal or road surface looks like part of the cause, our office drafts the government claim to the City of Colton and gets it filed inside the six-month limit.
The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani represents Colton clients in these matters, listed roughly in the order the City’s data suggests they occur:
- Car accidents at signalized intersections and after dark
- Pedestrian and bicycle injuries, including children
- Hit-and-run cases
- Motorcycle crashes on Reche Canyon and Agua Mansa
- Big-rig collisions on I-10 and I-215
- Premises falls
- Wrongful death
A representative can come to your home or to your room at Arrowhead Regional.
Sitting down with a Colton car accident attorney from our office, at home or by phone, costs you nothing. We are paid only from what we recover for you, so if the case brings in nothing, neither do we.
