Citrus Heights Personal Injury Attorney

Sacramento County

Among California’s 103 cities of 50,001 to 100,000 people, Citrus Heights posted the 13th-worst composite crash ranking in 2023, a sharp slide from 28th the year before (OTS 2023). Three things push it there: speed, motorcycles and drivers who flee. Each of them changes what a Citrus Heights personal injury attorney has to prove, and what you should preserve in the first days after a crash on Sunrise Boulevard, Auburn Boulevard or a quiet residential street.

At a glance

  • Composite rank: 13 of 103 (2023)

  • Motorcyclists: 29 hurt (10th)
  • Hit-and-run: 39 crashes (23rd)

With 369 people killed or injured, Citrus Heights sits near the middle of its group by sheer volume, yet its composite position is among the worst. The explanation is the mix: a city whose collisions skew toward speeding, motorcycles, impairment and flight is a city whose crashes tend to break bones rather than bumpers.

Hit-and-run and alcohol

Drivers who flee are the first of the three standouts, with 87 hit-and-run injury crashes across the two years shown above. If Citrus Heights detectives never identify the driver, your hospital bills and missed paychecks are usually claimed under the uninsured motorist (UM) section of your own policy, and the carrier will ask when police were told.

Watch out: Report a hit-and-run to Citrus Heights police the same day, even if you feel fine; a delayed report is the first thing a UM adjuster questions.

Alcohol overlaps with the late-night numbers. The 2023 data list 52 victims in alcohol-involved crashes and 29 hurt in collisions involving a drinking driver between 21 and 34, ranked 15th; 44 injury crashes happened in the hours from 9 at night to just before 3 in the morning (OTS 2023). A DUI arrest leads to a criminal case, but your injury claim against the drinking driver and that driver’s insurer stands apart from it and does not wait for a verdict.

Motorcycle crashes two years running

Two consecutive top-ten finishes for injured motorcyclists describe a pattern on the city’s arterials, not a bad season. The insurer’s defense in a motorcycle case is predictable. It will say the rider was going too fast, or that the car’s driver simply never saw the bike. The answer usually lies in the angle of impact, the damage to the motorcycle and helmet, and witnesses who saw the car turn. Lane-position and visibility disputes come up so often that our motorcycle accident page answers them one by one.

Tip: A body shop or salvage buyer can erase your best evidence, so hold the bike as it is until a lawyer has had it photographed. The crush pattern on the frame, forks and tank often shows how the other vehicle moved more clearly than anyone’s memory.

Speed on residential streets

Speed is the sharpest of the three signals: in 2022 only four cities in the group recorded more speeding injury crashes. Residents describe the same problem in their own words: since December 2020 the City has run a Multi Modal Transportation Safety Program with an online form and a ranking map for neighborhood traffic concerns, and the complaints it receives most often involve vehicle speeds and right-of-way violations on residential streets (City of Citrus Heights). For an injured pedestrian or cyclist, a record of neighbors flagging the same block before the crash is the kind of document worth requesting from City Hall.

Proving how fast the other car was going takes physical evidence, gathered before it disappears:

  • A download of the other vehicle’s event-data recorder
  • Skid and yaw marks photographed before the street is swept
  • Measurements of crush depth on both vehicles
  • Doorbell and storefront video, requested from neighbors within the first week

What the city has built and planned

Citrus Heights has an unusually well-documented safety program, and those documents can matter in a claim involving a city street:

  1. The Local Roadway Safety Plan, a council action of October 8, 2020, which identified locations for safety improvements, including the next item on this list (City of Citrus Heights).
  2. A rebuild at Roseville Road and Butternut Drive, a location named in that plan, adding a left-turn lane, curb bulb-outs, bike-lane striping and lighting under a contract awarded March 11, 2026.
  3. Reflective signal backplates installed at 34 signalized intersections to make the signals easier to see.
  4. The Auburn Boulevard Complete Streets project, which rebuilt the corridor from Sylvan Corners to Rusch Park in 2014 and began a second phase toward the Roseville city line in July 2024 (City of Citrus Heights).
  5. Sunrise Tomorrow, the redevelopment of the 100-acre Sunrise Mall property around a sports complex with a 4,000-seat arena and two NHL-size rinks, along with a planned multimodal transit center (City of Citrus Heights).

None of these projects is an admission about any particular crash. Their dates and descriptions, though, tell a lawyer which corners the City had already examined.

Using the data in a claim

Which department writes the report. Before 2006 a Sheriff’s deputy would have handled your crash; today the Citrus Heights Police Department does, through a Traffic unit backed by the department’s own 911 dispatch center (Citrus Heights). Interstate 80 skirts the west side of the city, and a crash on that freeway is a Highway Patrol case, so the report request goes to the CHP rather than to the city.

Trauma care and records. California’s 2025 trauma roster lists Mercy San Juan, just across the line in Carmichael, as a Level II center and the UC Davis Medical Center campus in Sacramento as Level I for both adults and children (EMSA). Ask for the full chart, including imaging reports and discharge notes, because the first emergency record anchors every later medical argument.

Filing limits and partial blame. Your lawsuit against the other motorist from a Sunrise or Auburn Boulevard collision must generally be started inside two years (CCP §335.1). Anything involving the City of Citrus Heights, such as a defective signal at one of those 34 intersections, or a Sacramento Regional Transit bus, begins instead with a government claim that generally must be presented within six months (Gov. Code §911.2). A rider whom a jury holds partly responsible still collects the rest of the damages under comparative fault (CACI 405). When negotiation fails, we file in the Sacramento County Superior Court, which assigns the department that hears the case.

Questions from riders, drivers and parents

Neighbors had complained about speeding on my street before I was hit. Does that matter?

It can. Complaints logged through the City’s traffic safety program show the problem was reported, which supports a claim that the street’s design or signage was a dangerous condition. The driver’s own conduct still decides most of the fault question.

An adjuster told me my motorcycle was going too fast. Is that the end of it?

That accusation has to be backed by evidence, and the bike, the helmet and the scene photos often contradict it. A jury that assigned a rider 20% of the blame would cut the award by a fifth, not erase it.

Police never identified the car that hit me. Is there any coverage?

With 39 hit-and-run injury crashes in the city in 2023, this question comes up often; the answer is generally the UM coverage on your own policy, supported by the police report number.

Where would a lawsuit over my Citrus Heights crash be heard?

In the Sacramento County Superior Court. The court decides which of its courtrooms takes a civil injury case, and we confirm the assignment when the complaint is filed.

A car struck my daughter on her bicycle. How often does that happen here?

Five bicyclists under 15 were injured in Citrus Heights in 2023, a rank of 26th out of 103. Her deadline is not calculated the way an adult’s is, and a claim against the City for a street defect still carries the six-month notice rule.
