Cathedral City Personal Injury Attorney
Riverside County
Cathedral City’s crash record changed sharply in a single year. People hurt in crashes involving alcohol went from 26 in 2022 to 56 in 2023, putting the city third among the 103 California cities of 50,001 to 100,000 people that the state compares (OTS 2023). Its composite standing fell from 64th place to 17th, where first is the most dangerous.
A Cathedral City personal injury attorney sees that change through the people it affects: a teenager riding home with a friend who had been drinking, a cyclist at a Date Palm Drive signal, a retiree crossing Ramon Road in the evening. This page is organized by those groups, so you can go straight to the one that fits.

Riding home with a driver who drank
No other measure sets the city apart like this one. It finished second, behind a single peer, on two separate 2023 OTS lists: people hurt by drinkers under 21 (8) and people hurt by drinkers from 21 to 34 (40, more than triple the prior year’s 12).
The Cathedral City Police Department, which the city runs itself, answers with sobriety checkpoints placed where DUI crashes and arrests have clustered, and it reminds drivers that being high on legal cannabis is still a DUI (City of Cathedral City). Checkpoints and patrols together produced 135 DUI arrests in the city that year, a dozen more than in 2022.
For a passenger, the driver’s age points to where the money is. A 19-year-old at the wheel is frequently using a car titled to a parent, which brings the parent’s insurer into the case. A 30-year-old with a bare-minimum policy may not cover a hospital stay at Desert Regional, and then the passenger’s own household policy, through its underinsured motorist section, becomes part of the claim.
Watch out: A passenger who knew the driver had been drinking can still recover. The insurer will argue that knowledge reduces the claim, and California’s percentage-based fault rule decides how much.
After dark on Date Palm and Highway 111
Fatal and injury crashes in the 9 p.m. to 2:59 a.m. window jumped from 15 to 32, enough for 13th place statewide among peers. Darkness costs evidence. Fewer people see the crash, store cameras on East Palm Canyon Drive record grainier images, and nobody photographs skid marks until morning. If you were hurt at night, list every lit storefront and gas station within sight of the spot, and hand that list over before the footage is recorded over.
People on foot
Ramon Road
A 52-year-old man walking near the Ramon Road bridge was struck in January 2025 by a driver who kept going, and he died of his injuries. Weeks later, Cathedral City police were still appealing for tips (NBC Palm Springs). For a family in that position, the auto insurance in the victim’s own household is often the source of recovery, since uninsured motorist coverage generally protects household members on foot. That coverage hinges on a prompt report to Cathedral City police.
Children and older pedestrians
The city went from 1 pedestrian hurt in 2022 to 9 in 2023. Three of the nine were younger than 15, and three were 65 or over. Right-of-way at an unmarked corner on Date Palm or Ramon is the usual battleground; our pedestrian accident page sets out those rules.
Riders on bicycles
Late one night in February 2026, a 48-year-old cyclist died at the intersection of Ortega Road and Date Palm Drive. According to police, the rider and the motorist both went through a red light (NBC Palm Springs).
When two people run the same red light, CACI 405 does the sorting. A jury could find both people responsible and split the blame, and the surviving family would still recover the driver’s share. Signal timing records, the speed of each, and any video from the corner become the core of the case. Riders and families can read more on our bicycle accident page, including what to do with the damaged bike.
Retirees and winter visitors
Resort traffic
Sitting between Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage, Cathedral City has golf resorts including Date Palm Country Club, Desert Princess and Lawrence Welk’s Desert Oasis (Wikipedia), and the season brings visitors and older drivers onto the same arterials commuters use. An 86-year-old man died in a two-car collision on Date Palm Drive near Techeva Drive in December 2025 (NBC Palm Springs).
The 2025 speed limit change
Starting July 25, 2025, the city cut speed limits on more than ten roads, among them Date Palm Drive between Vista Chino and 30th Avenue, which went from 55 to 50 mph (NBC Palm Springs). For any crash since then, speed is judged against 50.
Tip: Going home to Oregon or Alberta after the season does not move the claim; it stays in Riverside County. Keep the resort or rental confirmation, which fixes your dates and shows why you were on that road.
Motorcycle riders
The motorcyclist count rose from 9 to 14. Highway 111 runs through town as East Palm Canyon Drive, tracing the old Bradshaw Trail, and the city’s auto center adds nine dealerships for 16 brands, with test drives and car carriers in the mix. Left turns across a rider’s path are the classic dispute, and our motorcycle accident page walks through how they are argued.
Drivers caught in a flash flood
Tropical Storm Hilary pushed the city to declare a local emergency in August 2023. Date Palm Drive, Varner Road, Ortega Road and Vista Chino at the Whitewater wash were all shut (City of Cathedral City), and Date Palm took on water again near I-10 and Los Gatos Road in August and November 2025. If you crashed in floodwater or debris:
- Photograph the water line, mud and any barricade, or the lack of one
- Save emergency alerts that reached your phone that day
- Note whether a closure sign stood before the flooded stretch
- Mark the six-month date on a calendar if the City’s barricades, signs or drainage are in question (Gov. Code §911.2)
Your questions about Cathedral City crashes
My teenage son was a passenger with a driver who had been drinking. Can he make a claim?
Yes, against the driver’s coverage and, if the car belonged to someone else, the owner’s coverage too. Given how often young drinking drivers hurt people here, ask early whose name is on the title.
My father was killed in a crash on Cathedral Canyon Drive. Who can bring the claim?
Under California law the claim belongs to his surviving family, usually a spouse and children first. A driver died on Cathedral Canyon Drive on January 30, 2026 (NBC Palm Springs), and families in that position should preserve the vehicle before it is salvaged.
The driver who hit me was a juvenile. Can I still recover?
Yes. After a May 2025 crash in the city that killed a sedan driver, police arrested a juvenile (NBC Palm Springs). The family’s auto policy and the car’s owner are the usual paths to payment.
Will my case go to Indio or to Riverside?
Neither, for a larger case. Since August 1, 2026, the court has routed unlimited civil filings from 92234 and 92235 to Palm Springs.
Records, hospitals and the courthouse
| What you need | For a Cathedral City crash |
|---|---|
| Who wrote the Date Palm or Ramon report | Officers of Cathedral City’s department |
| Report for an I-10 crash | The CHP |
| Level I adult trauma | Desert Regional, in Palm Springs |
| Level IV trauma | Eisenhower, in Rancho Mirage |
| Unlimited civil filing | Palm Springs, on Tahquitz Canyon Way |
The trauma designations come from the state’s 2025 roster (EMSA). The courthouse assignment, at 3255 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, appears in the Riverside Superior Court’s filing order signed July 15, 2026 (Riverside Superior Court). For a Highway 111 collision with a private motorist, the complaint must reach that Tahquitz Canyon courthouse within two years (CCP §335.1).
Representation for Cathedral City crash victims
The Law Offices of Jacob Emrani represents residents, snowbirds and resort workers hurt on Date Palm Drive, Ramon Road, Cathedral Canyon Drive and East Palm Canyon Drive. When we open a Cathedral City file, we order the police department’s report, write to the businesses on that stretch for video, and ask whether flooding, a closure or a city road condition makes the City a party.
The data puts drunk-driving crashes first, so we look hard at chemical test results and at every policy that could pay, including the household policies of passengers. Our other Cathedral City work covers car accident claims at the Dinah Shore intersection, Ortega Road cyclist cases, Ramon Road pedestrian cases, motorcycle crashes near the auto center, SunLine bus passengers, rideshare riders leaving the resorts, falls on resort grounds, dog bites and wrongful death claims. Anyone who needs a Cathedral City car accident lawyer after a Highway 111 collision, or a Cathedral City personal injury attorney after a fall at a resort, gets the same scrutiny of insurance limits.
Telling us what happened costs you nothing. There is no hourly billing on a Cathedral City injury case: you pay nothing unless we win. We will send someone to your home, or to your room at Desert Regional, if you cannot travel. From anywhere in the Coachella Valley, the number is (888) 952-2952; the case evaluator on our site asks about the street and the hour.
Every group above is described from public data as general information. Advice about your own claim requires a lawyer to review the police report, the medical records and the policies involved.
