Camarillo Personal Injury Attorney

Fifty collisions in five years occurred at a single Camarillo intersection: Las Posas Road and West Daily Drive. The figure comes from the city’s Local Road Safety Plan, adopted July 13, 2022, which reviewed every crash on city roadways from 2015 through 2019 (Camarillo LRSP). Few cities publish their crash data in this much detail. This page reviews it street by street and explains what it means for anyone looking for a Camarillo personal injury attorney after a collision here.

Five years and 2,763 collisions

Over those five years before the pandemic, investigators recorded 2,763 collisions on streets the city maintains. Twelve were fatal and 69 caused severe injuries, together less than 4% of the total, and 2016 was the worst year for both overall and serious crashes (Camarillo LRSP). For scale, the Census Bureau’s mid-2025 estimate puts the city’s population at 68,652 (Census).

Las Posas Road leads the list

Four of the eight intersections with the most crashes are on Las Posas Road, and the plan also ranks the stretch of Las Posas between Camarillo Center Drive and Lewis Road (SR-34) as the highest-collision segment in the city, with 82 crashes. A Ventura County Sheriff’s Office release separately describes a fatal single-vehicle crash on Las Posas west of Lewis (VCSO).

Where the most serious crashes occurred

A collision count measures frequency. The plan also weighted crashes by severity, using an “EPDO” score, and that list looks quite different:

1. Carmen Dr & E. Ponderosa Dr — highest severity score; a fatal approach-turn crash in 2018.
2. Upland Rd & Santa Rosa Rd — second; a red-light-running fatality in 2015.
3. Mobil Ave & E. Ponderosa Dr — a 2015 pedestrian death involving a DUI driver.
4. Arneill Rd, Las Posas to Barry St — the highest-severity segment, with a 2018 pedestrian fatality 183 feet north of Barry and a 2016 pedestrian death at Rocklyn Street.
5. Adolfo Rd & Tahquitz Dr — an unsafe-speed broadside fatality in 2017.
6. Pleasant Valley Rd — a 2019 head-on fatality at Southfield Road.
7. Mission Oaks Blvd, US-101 to Upland — a 2016 fatality at Dawson Drive.

Each of these locations appears in the adopted plan’s tables (Camarillo LRSP). Their relevance to a claim is limited but real. A listing in the plan does not prove the city caused your crash, but it shows what the city knew about a location, which matters if signal timing, sight lines or crosswalk design contributed.

Road users the plan singles out

Drivers 65 and older

Collisions in which the at-fault driver was 65 or older accounted for 243 fatal or injury crashes over the five years, about 8% of the city’s collisions, and aging drivers are one of the plan’s six emphasis areas (City of Camarillo). An older motorist who runs the light at Santa Rosa and Upland is held to the same negligence standard as a teenager, and his bodily injury liability coverage responds the same way.

Claim note: A driver’s vision, medications or a recent medical episode can become evidence, but obtaining those records requires a legal basis and careful handling.

Pedestrians at dusk and after dark

People on foot were involved in only 58 collisions over five years, about 2% of the total, but those crashes killed 3 people and left 8 with severe injuries. Most of the people struck were in a crosswalk at an intersection, and two of the three deaths occurred at dusk or at night.

Claim note: In a dusk crosswalk case, lighting evidence such as streetlight outages, the angle of the sun at that hour and the driver’s headlight use often decides the question of fault, a point developed further on our pedestrian accident page.

Cyclists

Cyclists are another emphasis area. OTS counted 16 riders injured on city streets in 2023, which ranked Camarillo 56th of 103, near the middle of its group.

Claim note: Bicycle cases near the Metrolink Camarillo Station, in service since 1994 (City of Camarillo), and along Las Posas often turn on right-hook turns and car doors opened into a rider’s path, both of which are addressed on our bicycle accident page.

Impaired drivers

DUI was the cited violation in 4 of the 12 fatal collisions, and the plan maps DUI hot spots to direct enforcement. In 2023, the state ranked Camarillo a comparatively low 80th of 103 similar cities for alcohol-involved injuries, with 16 people hurt (OTS). In other words, impaired-driving crashes here are fewer, but each one carries a higher risk of death.

Claim note: Punitive damages may be available against a drunk driver, although insurance does not pay them (Civ. Code §3294).

State crash rankings for 2023

The plan’s data ends in 2019. The Office of Traffic Safety covers more recent years, counting only city-street crashes and ranking Camarillo within Group C, where 1 is the worst (OTS):

The previous year was similar: 251 victims and a rank of 60th of 104.

What the rankings show

Camarillo sits near the middle overall and on the safer side for pedestrians. That is consistent with the plan’s findings: crashes concentrate at a small number of busy intersections rather than spreading across the city.

Lewis Road and the 101

Some of the most serious crashes in the area happen on roads the city does not control. On August 15, 2026, a 26-year-old Oxnard man was killed when his truck rolled over on Lewis Road near Camarillo; the CHP investigated (VC Star). Lewis Road is also the route to CSU Channel Islands (Wikipedia), and the plan recommends a corridor study of the rail line along SR-34.

US-101 carries commuters and freight past Camarillo Premium Outlets (Simon). The CHP’s Ventura Area office on Valentine Road covers Camarillo and the 101 (CHP Ventura), and its Moorpark Area covers the freeway from the Los Angeles County line to Camarillo Springs Road, including the approach to the Conejo Grade (CHP Moorpark). Crashes on surface streets are handled by the Camarillo Police Department, which the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office operates under contract from 3701 E. Las Posas Road (VCSO).

What the data means for your claim

For an injured person, the data mainly affects evidence and timing:

• Request the report from the correct agency: the Sheriff’s Camarillo station for city streets, or CHP Ventura or Moorpark for the 101 and state routes.
• If your crash occurred at one of the listed intersections, ask a lawyer whether signal timing or design records are worth requesting.
• If a CAT bus or Dial-A-Ride van, a city truck or faded crosswalk paint was involved, a written claim to the public agency is due within six months (Gov. Code §911.2; CAT).
• Otherwise, a lawsuit against a driver must generally be filed within two years (CCP §335.1); civil cases are heard at the Ventura County Hall of Justice on South Victoria Avenue (Ventura Superior Court).
• Keep the records from every facility that treats you. For severe injuries, paramedics in this part of the county look to two Level II trauma centers on the state list, Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks and Ventura County Medical Center (EMSA).

Does it help that my intersection is in the city’s safety plan?

It provides useful context, particularly if the road’s design is at issue. It does not establish fault on its own; the plan’s tables show that driver conduct, such as red-light running and unsafe speed, caused several of the fatal crashes.

An older driver turned left into me on Ponderosa. Does the driver’s age matter legally?

Not directly. Fault depends on the turn and on who had the right of way. Age becomes relevant only if a medical condition contributed, which may bear on whether the driver should have been behind the wheel at all.
