Agoura Hills Personal Injury Attorney
Los Angeles County
Agoura Hills straddles the Ventura Freeway at the western edge of Los Angeles County and calls itself the gateway to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (Wikipedia). Who gets hurt here depends heavily on how they travel: freeway commuters, drivers on the two-lane stretches of Agoura Road, riders heading for the canyons, visitors on their way into the parkland and, in fire season, residents trying to leave. Anyone looking for an Agoura Hills personal injury attorney will find each of those groups, and the local facts that shape their claims, in the sections that follow.
Agoura Hills at a glance
- 19,243 people (Census V2025)
- 92nd of 103 overall, a low-risk ranking
- 42nd of 103 for speeding crashes
- No hit-and-run injury crashes in 2023
Rush hour on the 101
When the Ventura Freeway was built through the area in the late 1960s, it split the community into northern and southern halves, and it still carries the heaviest traffic in town. Highway Patrol officers from the West Valley Area, whose service list names Agoura Hills and Westlake Village, investigate wrecks on those lanes and ramps (CHP Area 580).
The state’s city crash rankings leave freeway wrecks out entirely, so the 101’s toll in Agoura Hills does not show up in the figures on this page. What a commuter caught in a rear-end chain on the 101 needs is the CHP report number from the officer’s card, because the full report can take weeks if anyone was badly hurt. Before leaving the shoulder, if you safely can:
- Photos of every car and plate
- Each driver’s insurer
- Your lane and the nearest exit
- The CHP card
Questions from Agoura Hills
Which agency handles a Kanan Road crash?
Sheriff’s deputies from the station on Agoura Road, because Kanan is a city street. Had it happened on the 101, CHP West Valley would have written it.
I was treated at Los Robles in Thousand Oaks. Does Ventura County law apply?
California law applies either way, and the claim follows the place of the crash in Los Angeles County, not the hospital.
Does the city’s low crash ranking hurt my case?
No. Your claim rests on how your own collision happened on Kanan, Agoura Road or wherever it was, and a citywide ranking cannot answer that.
A driver swerved to avoid a deer and hit me. Who is responsible?
Quite possibly that driver, if speed or inattention played a part. The animal explains the swerve; it does not excuse it.
I was hurt in traffic during a fire evacuation. Is that an ordinary car accident claim?
In most cases, yes. Smoke and congestion affect what a careful driver should have done, but the claim is built the same way.
Drivers on Kanan Road and Agoura Road
Off the freeway, the city’s figures are modest. Its 2023 composite ranking was 92nd of 103, near the safe end of the scale, but speed stood out: 9 injury crashes were speed-related, 42nd in the group, and deputies made 14 DUI arrests, a total that ranks 24th on a list where 1 means the fewest arrests (OTS).
The two local crashes that drew news coverage date from 2015 and 2022. On March 29, 2015, four or five vehicles collided in the 1200 block of Kanan Road, six people were hurt and two were flown out by helicopter (CBS Los Angeles, 2015). On June 30, 2022, a driver passing on Agoura Road near Agoura Hills crossed into oncoming traffic, and the head-on collision that followed killed one driver, according to the Sheriff’s Department (CBS Los Angeles, 2022).
With four or five cars in one crash, the hard part of the claim is sorting out shares of blame among drivers who each have an insurer and a lawyer. California’s comparative fault rule gives each driver a percentage, and nobody loses a claim outright for being 10% or 30% at fault (CACI 405). Our car accident page covers what evidence settles those disputes.
Riders, walkers and runners
Motorcyclists
Agoura Hills recorded 4 motorcyclists hurt or killed in 2023, which put it 50th of 103, almost exactly mid-table. Small numbers can hide severe injuries, and a rider’s claim tends to draw the same two defenses from an insurer: excessive speed, or a motorcycle the driver says was impossible to see. The motorcycle accident page shows how skid marks, damage patterns and witness positions answer both.
People on foot and on bicycles
The 2023 figures for people on foot and on bicycles were low, 1 pedestrian and 1 cyclist, and the state recorded no hit-and-run injury crashes in the city that year.
Race day
Each March, the Great Race of Agoura Hills, held at Chumash Park since 1986, fills city streets with runners, and on race day the organizers, the property owners along the course and every driver near it owe care to the people on foot.
Visitors on the way into the mountains
On a weekend, a good share of the cars on Agoura Hills roads belong to people who live somewhere else. Trailheads, Ladyface Mountain on the west side and the wider recreation area bring in drivers unfamiliar with the curves. Animals are on the road too. Traffic deaths are a leading reason the Santa Monica Mountains’ mountain lion population has declined, which is why the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing now arches over the 101 and Agoura Road at Liberty Canyon on the city’s east side (Wikipedia).
Swerving for a deer or a coyote does not automatically excuse a driver who then strikes another car. Speed, following distance and attention all still count. A visitor’s claim is decided under the same California rules and deadlines that apply to residents.
Residents during a wildfire evacuation
The Woolsey Fire swept through the community in 2018 under Santa Ana winds, and the Kenneth Fire prompted evacuation warnings in January 2025 (Wikipedia). An evacuation puts a surge of cars on a handful of roads, often in smoke or darkness, and a collision in that setting is still judged by ordinary negligence rules. If the fire itself burned you, damaged your lungs or destroyed property, our wildfire page explains who can be held responsible.
Who responds, and where patients go
| Situation | Who handles it |
|---|---|
| City streets | Sheriff |
| The 101 | CHP Area 580 |
| Serious trauma | Thousand Oaks or Northridge |
The Sheriff’s station that serves Agoura Hills under contract sits on Agoura Road itself, at number 27050, and is called the Malibu/Lost Hills Station (LASD). From Agoura Hills, an ambulance with a badly injured patient can go to Los Robles in Thousand Oaks or to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, both rated adult Level II on the state roster (EMSA). Being treated in Thousand Oaks does not move your claim to Ventura County.
Six months or two years
Two different clocks can run after an Agoura Hills crash. A lawsuit against the driver who hit you on Kanan or Agoura Road is due within two years, the period set by CCP §335.1 for injury suits. A claim blaming road design runs on a six-month clock against the City of Agoura Hills, the County or Caltrans (Gov. Code §911.2), well before most people think about filing suit.
Under General Order 2024-GEN-003-00 (LASC), a lawsuit is assigned to the court district whose territory includes the collision site. Agoura Hills sits at the county’s western edge, so we check each crash address in the court’s filing locator instead of assuming a courthouse.
Our Agoura Hills clients
Our clients in Agoura Hills include residents of Old Agoura and the neighborhoods north and south of the 101, commuters who pass through every day and weekend visitors bound for the mountains. We take on claims arising on Kanan Road, Agoura Road and the freeway, and on an Agoura Hills case the first records we request are the Malibu/Lost Hills or CHP West Valley report and the charts from Los Robles or Northridge. For a visitor hurt on the way to a trailhead, we handle the claim from start to finish, so there is no need to come back to Agoura Hills to pursue it. The rest of the work is varied: pedestrians and cyclists, people hit by trucks, slip-and-fall injuries in shopping centers, dog bites and wrongful death claims by families.
Talking to us first is free. If your claim brings in nothing, you owe us nothing. An Agoura Hills car accident lawyer on our team will travel to Los Robles, Northridge or wherever you are recovering. Call (888) 952-2952. If a call is inconvenient, use the case evaluator instead. Spanish-language information about these claims is on our site en español.
